Newberry Indians
Fall Before Fast
Birds, 67-50 Here
In one of the most spirited con
testb seen this year in the University
Field House, Carolina's Gamecocks
downed the Newberr. Indians 67 to
50, February 5, but not until the sur
prisingly strong Redskins had wrest
ed the lead away from the Gamecocks
three times.
The men from Newberry presented
a strong zone defense which during
the tirst half of the game, kept the
Birds away from the wickets. The
only thing that kept the Indians from
leading was the fact that they were
worse otT at the basket than the
Birds. The half ended with the score
Birds 27, Indians 22.
Then came the all important second
half. Before three minutes had
elapsed, three baskets by Mar%" Beskin
and Davis of Newberry gave the
visitors their first lead since early in
the first half. 36 to 32. Thenl Ed
Daly, who played a bangup defensive
game, copped a bucket and a free
throw, while Baggott and Ary added
a basket apiece and the Indians
trailed. Baskets by Bruce Larson
and Beskin put the Ncwberry buys
back in the lead 43-41.
Then Baggott and Ar) w%ent to
work . hite tired Indians and be
tween theimch% e worked the score up
to 56-47.
Beskin and Schimnnel led the New%
herry scoring with 34 marker, apiece
Aryy led the Bird scoring with nine
baskets and four free throw%s for 22
points. Bob Baggott, whose pla)
throughout the entire ee cning was
tops. racked up eight buckct- for
runnertip honors.
The victury fur Cajoliua did
everything but clinch ail claims to
the state chamnpionship ainice New
h,erry was the only real threat.

The soldiers' "(oat" Davis scored

the soldiers led. 39- 37.
The near capacity crowd in the field
Ih 'use was going wild when the clock
showed only' four minutes to go and
the Raiders leading. 40-39. The Birds
soon grabbed a 45-40 lead by three

minutcs rema'ning. The Raiders
lightinrg to regain the lead. shot wildly
during the final secords of the game,
only to outscore the Gamecocks 4 to
