Panel To Bo Placed
In University Library
One of the most interesting relics
given the University is a fragrent of
a pew, burned in the old chapel fire
Jan. 26. 1855, which was originally
owned by the famous Dr. Francis
Lieber, professor of history and po
litical economy here from 1835 to
1856.
Following his custom of placing
mottoes on the walls of his cla:s
room, he painted on it in Greek tle l
favorite sayipg of Socr'ates which,
translated by Dr. E. L. Green, means,
"There is no excallence without great
Labor".
On the other side are carved ini
tials and tames of students as well
as the outline of an old literary so
ciety key.
The panel front the pew was given
to the University in January by Doc
tor Lieber's granddaughter, Mrs.
Amelia Lieber Stearns of Providence,
Rhode Island. Some time ago she
asked Archibald Matterson of the
same city, a cousin of Deatn Chase,
whether or not the University would
like to have the memento. The latter
communicated with the former, who
replied that the University would be I
delighted to own it.
It is to be displayed in the South
Carolina library.
Doctor Green, in his history of the
University says of the chapel fire:
"A fire broke out from a spark,
it seemed. that had * caught in the
blinds of the cupola. The wind was
high, and in four hours the chapel
and East Rutledge were in ruins, and
West Rutledge was so damaged that
it required rebuilding. The students
were promptly on the ground and
worked with the energy and enthu
siam of youth, but to no purpose. The
building was doomed".
The rebuilding was completed in
1857.
Cannon Looks Into
Renting Textbooks
Books Would Be Cheaper,
Less Changes Necessary
Investigation of the practicability
of installing a textbook rental system
in the University is being made by
Prof. Furman Cannon at the request
of the Faculty Committee on Edu
cational Rehabilitation of Veterans of
the War, President McKissick an
noutceS.
Under this plant studentts cottld ei
her rent or buy textbooks. Tlhey coutld I
be rented for a ucht lower price
Lthan the purchase cost.
Ii thte rentad system should be
adloptedl, it would necessitate less
frequent chtanges of textbooks in
:ourses.
Thtis State ntow has a hightly suc
essful systemt of renting textbooks
o public school pupils.
