Of Gamecock Lists Wide
Assortment Of Birds
At No. 8 University Campus
there is a small room papered in
a design of silver cocks and contain
ing shelves whosc main function
is to house Gamccocks. Not the
crowning variety, but those of glass,
china, jade, ivory, bronze, and a
variety of other materials of every
size and description are the collec
tion of Mrs. J. Rion McKissick.
Airs. McKissick has been collect
ing gamecocks for almost four
years; most of them have been sent
and brought hack from other coun
tries-China, France, England, and
Pacific islands. One of the newest
is a handsome cock sent from Cas
ablanca by an alumnus of USC,
now a captain in the army.
Vhen we went over to see Airs.
MeKissick, she pointed out to us
that the gamecocks so neatly ar
ranged on the shelves were,.as all
gantecocks should, playing ant ac
tive part in Carolira life. One shelf
contained a column .f cocks strut
ting along in perfect formation
iiclh reiresented the ROTC. On
another slelf two were in a boxing
ring whlie nemiarb y gamnecock teams
played football. Others huddled
around a piano exemplified the Glee
Clul.

MIeKissick are in the form of pins.
It is scldom that she is seen with
out one on her dress or the lapel
of her coat. Mrs. McKissick also
has a fascination assortment of pic
tures of cock-lights. One pair of
prints is dated 17:7. We happened

that the gamecock was a :nuch
tore stalwart and courageous bird.

Colored Versifier Has
Contributed To Florida
And Maryland Papers
A muscial and poetical janitor on
the second floor of the library is
one of the latest discoveries of
which the University of South Caro
lina boasts. Howard Peterson,
who has been working here for two
monhs, made his living by writ
ing poetry until his family got too
large, then he had to go to work,
but he says that he enjoys work
ing as well as writing. His poetry
conies to him while he is working,
and he will type it then, or some
times it comes to him in a dream
and he will write it doWn next
morning.
The colored versifier worked for
the "Baltimore Times" in Mary
land in 1928 and has also con
tributed to the "Gainesville Sun"
and "Jacksonville Times" in Florida.
Though he has had some of his
poems printed and sold them on the
street for fifteen cents a copy, he
has aspirations of having a book
compiled sonic day.
Howard has always enjoyed writ
ing verse, but lie doesn't read poetry
very much. He says, "There's a
heap o' stuff in my head that has
to conic out." One of his latest
compositions is printed below in
the original copy:

'I'he V-5 Pre-flight boys, working
with the Navy Mother's club, have
been responsible for the sale of
sonic $15,000 worth of bonds in the
.Ith \Var Bond drive, Lieutenant
Whisnant has announced.
The boys tiemselves bought
some $3,000 worth. The majority
of the boys allot an average of 23
percent of their salary for bonds.

Operate Gamecock
On Air Program
Several weeks ago, Jimmy Sheri
dan and Ernest Davis revived the
radio program, the Gamecock on
the Air, which is broadcast every
Friday afternoon from 3:30 to 4
o'clock. The program was orig
inated last year by Art Roberts and
Jimmy Sheridan, and was stopped
when Art went to the army.
The program is derived principal
ly from the Gamecock. Sheridan
reads the general news, and Davis
the sports and society. A personali
ty sketch of a faculty inember is
read, usually the one sketched in
the Gamecock. Another weekly
feature is brief biographies of two
proniinent students. The program
is broadcast every week.
Drive For Funds
To Paint Portrait
For Old Library
The Lambda Chi fraternity ii
sponsoring a drive, sndorsed by Dr.
J. R. McKissick, to raise $100 to
have a portrait painted of nilly Far
row. Farrow, a Carolina alumnus
from Darlington, was shot down in
one of the fit maids over Tokvo.
The portrait will be painted by
the Columbia artist, Charles Crow
son, and will be hung in the South
Caroliniana Library. The portrait
will be painted from pictures and'

mother, Mrs. Jesse Farrow of
Darlington.
