Wash Drawings Done
While Gambrell On
Duty In South America
Fifty wash drawings said by art
critics to be among the best ever
shown here, are on exhibit at the
Columbia USO Center. They were
painted by a former University of
South Carolina student, Reuben
Gambrell now in the armed forces.
They may be seen at the USO
Center here until January 15, ac
cording to Miss May Marslhall,
temporary head of the University
of South Carolina Art Department.
Gambrell, rated as one of the
most promising of the art grad
uates of his class, painted the col
lection now being exhibited here
while on duty in South America.
They are all on colorful South
American subjects.
After leaving the University for
his degree, Gambrell became a
member of the University of Georg
ia's art faculty. The University
of Georgia department of art is
sponsoring the exhibit here, and is
planning to send it to many other
sections of the country. Gambrell's
drawings are rated by both the Uni
versity of South Carolina and
teorgia art departments as "pro
fessional in every respect."

A Card Per Stude
After several years research, Dr.
E. L. Green, ancient languages de
partment of the University of South
Carolina, has completed a list of
alumni of the University from 1805
.to, 1873, and suggests that it be
printed as a check list, It would be
very useful if a student wanted to
find out whether a certain person
came to school here, as there is
only a class list now.
Among the sources of Dr. Green's
information were three volumes of
records of the University. One from
1805 to 1835, another from 1836 to
1851, and a third which was begun
in 1851. The latter was a list that
every student was supposed to sign.
The first name on this list is Frank
lin J. Moses, who was the infamous
governor of South Carolina during
reconstruction. Another record was
an alumni catalogue prepared in
1854 by Col. James Blanding, sec
retary of the Board of Trustees, for
the semi-centennial in December of
that year. In this catalogue and un
til 1900 no one was considered an
alumnus unless they had graduated.
Dr. Green is now working on a
list of students by classes, and will
have individual cards that will give
information about the person, such
as the number of years he attended
the University, when lie graduated,
and what lie did after lie left. Be
iore the Civil War, the majority of
students who left the University
were either planters, lawyers, teach
ers, preachers, or doctors. ''he first
civil engineer was a Mr. Dcas from
Charleston in 1846.

)f Males
(1o, standards for dates and pro,pec
tive husbands are getting higher.
At this point, if you are fran
tically wondering w%hat to do about
the situation, my advice is to remain
calm. You have two important fac
tors in your favor: (1) the ambition
of a great many co-eds is to have a
date every night; (2) the aspiration
of all girls is to get married. How
ever, this is no reason to believc
that you are impregnable and omnip
otent. Whether it is fashionable or
not, girls do not like those belong
ing to the genus canis of large car
nivarous mamuals, commonly called
wolves.
It is not necessary to be heard
as well as seen by each girl you
pass, nor continually use the armed
. orces a, an excuse to call girls at
uniatteringly late hours for dates.

University Given
National Publicity
National publicity was given to
the University in a full-page ad
vcrtisentent of the Slater Mill in N
the New York Times December 5.
Part of it was a story concerning
the cooperation of the Extension Di
vision of the University wilh the
mill management in planning the
Winter showing of educational
filns as part of the community's
activities.
Another point to remember is to
tell the girl your name at the begin
ning of a telephone conversation,
and keep her from trying to guess
for several minutes the person to
whom she is speakinig. \omen also
grimace at the thought of becoming
a dictaphone through anl evening.
Listening for hours to self-centere"t
accounts that would bore even the
man's mother is not their idea of
a good time. If yon must use a line
they ask that you make it subtle
as well as entertaining. Please not
such remarks as: "I've been waiting
all my life to meet you" or "I've
been everywhere but I've never
seen anyone to compare with you."
Yes, a girl will look before she
leaps in 1104, but if you add these
facts to your already powerful per
sonality, it will probably be in your
direction.
