Credited With Sink
Lt. Edward Barnard Crawford,
'41A, whose home is at Clemson
College, now bombardier of a Liber
ator of the U. S. Army Fifth Air
Force is credited with spotting a
Japanese medium class cruiser on
the night of November 26 while pa
trolling the Bismark Sea and leav
ing it in an exploding sheet of
flames, according to an Associated
Press report.
Crawford's heavy bomber sighted
the ship just before midnight in the
Kavieng area off New Ireland, the
report stated.
Crawford lined the twisting and
turning cruiser in his sights. The
first bomb made a direct hit as a
terrific explosion and flash shattered
the darkness. A second bomb which
hit the ship's deck was followed by
three smaller explosions.
Crawford's bomber made a large
circle in preparation for one last run,
states the report, but the Jap super
structure was a sheet of flames and
the crew marked it off as one less
cruiser in Japan's Navy.
