Rion McKissick of the University. It has never been printed before. Graduates of 194': Neither you nor your fellow-stu dents and the members of our fac ulty and administrative staff will ever forget the University year which ends tonight. For it has been the year of the swiftest transition, the greatest change in the long life of this in stitution. Ours is no longer simply a Uni versity because within six months it has become also a training school of the United States Navy for the na tion's defense. By the end of this calendar year, in addition to the host of regular University students preparing to en ter the armed services, more than three thousand five hundred young men in Navy units will have re ceived some part of their training here. All these groups combine to form by far the largest number ever as sembled for instruction on our camt pus. The University is now making and will continue to make by far its greatest contribution to national defense. Our Alma Mater is doing and will continue to do her utmost for the preservation of the freedom and in dependence of America. To this patriotic achievement you and your fellow-students have con tributed greatly. For you, as well as for the re;t of the student body and our faculty, the University's partial transforma tion into a training school for our "land of hope and glory" has meant inconvenience, discomfort, change from accustomed ways of work and life on our campus, but, proud and grateful that the University in this way has been called upon to serve, you have cheerfully and helpfully cooperated. Your attitude and your coopera tion in such circumstances amply attest your fidelity of the highest traditions of our University as well as your love of country. , You are entitled to the gratitude of both. "Where now is the evidence that they were soft, pampered and undis ciplined? "In the history of the nation youth has never given a better ac count of itself." Our Alma Mater has survived three great wars in swhich our coun try has been engaged. Virtually her entire student body served in the Confederate army in the War for Southern Independence. A vast proportion of her sons served in the first World WVar. In the present war an immense multitude of her former students are also doing their full part. Their record and yours evidences that our University has 'iever sent forth conscientious objectors, draft dodgers and slackers. Their record and yours evidences w that our Alma \later has reared her sons and daughters to be loyal Americans in war as well as in peace. Their record and yours evidences that here and at home they and you have learned the lesson that service of our country in time of war is not only the highest duty but also the highest honor. One of the greatest of. our fellow alumni, Wade liampton, when he was nominated for governor it South ,Carolina in ts7i, told the nominating convention: "There are men in this State in whose eyes I possess disquahifica tions of which ! cannot dispos.Cs myself and would not if I coudd. "I mean my army.record. "If I were to say that I am ashamed of it, I would be saying that which is not true. "All the offices in the world might perish before I would say so." When Gen. Robert E. Lee was president of Washington College af ter the war, one of its students, a youthful Confederate veteran, c marked to him: "I at so impatient to make up for the time I lost in the army He got no further. General Lee flushed and ex claimed in an almost angry tone: "Mr. H umph reys 1However long you live and whatever you accom plish, you will find that the time you sp)ent in the Confederate army was the most profitably spent porn~ tion of your life. "Never again speak of having lost time in the army.''
