Game
Future Bright
For Cage Fans
Basketball Team May Be
Organized Here Soon
By Charlie Sanders
Prospects for a University of
South Carolina basketball team this
season looked bright this week in
view of the fact that some of the
Navy V-12 students have competed
in the cage game before and will
play the game if the Navy allows
them to do so. No official announce
rnent has been made by Athletic Di
rector Cannon concerning the matter
but it is highly probable that the
Gamecocks will put a cage team on
the court. A limited schedule will
be attempted if a complete season is
impossible.
Three of last year's basketball
Gamecocks are back this year to do
their bit for the Birds. These boys.
Pat Thrash. Cy Waldrop, and Skimp
Harrison will see action this year if
they decide to participate in the sport.
0
T. S. Ary and Bob Baggott, seamen
at USC and Gamecock football
squadmen will constitute a part of
the V-12's contribution to the team.
The '42 Gamecock squad had one
of its best sea!ons of its history.
They competed in the Southergt Con
ference finals and were olv d'u. ned
by the might. Duke Blue )e ils n
the final game.
Last year the Birds had a pretty
succestful season until near the close
when they dropped some important
Contests.
Martin and Riddle. last year's
stars did not return to the campus
this year.
As no plans have been completed
yet by the Athletic Department. tro
coach's name has been made public.
Rex Enright, who steered the boys
last season is now \thletic Director

Clemson Tigers
And Coast Guard
Tn the highlight of the Gamecock
football season, the C'arolina Birds
handed the C'lemson Tigers their
worst beating in m'iny years, as they'
rolled along to the tune of to6
over their ancient rivals, in the sta
dium Odtober 21.
It was the second time in three
years that the Birds have been able
to defeat the 'Tigers, and marked the
first time in seven vears that the
Gamecocks were even favored to
wmn.
Marion "Butch" Butler scored the
only Clemson touchdowvn, wvhich, in
cidentally was the first in the game.
The first half ended Clemson 6.
Carolina 0.
At this point something short of
a blockhuster hit the T'igers hut
promtptly. On a sustained drive.
Gene \\agnon drove to pay dirt
from the six-yarel marker. Phil Can-.
tore, star right half back, followed
closely with a 7fl-yard run for the
second Bird score, \\'agnon carried
the pigskin over again after the
Gamecocks bad dlriven to the T1iger
thr'ee.
Buck \\illiams, a Naval pre-flight
student, contributed a score ont a
34-yard run. 'To end the scoring.
Bill MeM illan, scored on a quarter
back sneak. Brick Bradford hooted
three extra points.
F'or the first time in the season,
the Gamecocks scored first. Ernest
Lawhorne hit paydirt early int the
ganme. The second Gamecock score
came on a pass from Buck \\'illiamns
to Joe Faress of Greenville who
took thte hall in the end zotte for the
score. The last of thte scores camte
when Jack .hones bucked the line
front the six-yard line.

Carolina has yet to send a team out on the football field with
the same backfield as the one used in the previous game. Either
injuries or transfer has caused the volunteer coaches -to break
a new man into the lineup easch week . . . So'far this season, the
Liamecocks havc had to come from behind in every game except
he Coast Guard game. Even Clemson managed to score before
the avalanche began. Say, what became of the guy that wanted
to bet me ten smackers on that Clemson game? Darn my con
icience! . . Although Bob Baggott, freshman end from St.
Leo High of Chicago, fought a losing battle in keeping his
pants hitched up around his hips in the N-C game, he proved
to be a sparkplug in the line. The tarheels ran a few plays
wround his end of the line and then decided that there just
vasn't a hole there. The Birds really missed Dynamite Dom
in the game. (lad to see Johnny Tominack back in the game
igain. John dropped football for a few weeks while he got
his studies back up to Phi Beta Kappa levels and now feels
that he can rest a while.
HE DUKE SEZ,
Percentage .900, 27 right, 3 wrong. Trying again.
OHIO STATE-MICHIGAN-Paul B's boys pulled one out of
he fire last week but it will take a lot to pull this one away
from the Wolves.
CLEMSON-GEORGIA TECH.-Too bad for Clemson, they
vere such nice boys.
WISCONSIN-MINNESOTA--The Gophers in a breeze.
DI'KE-NORTH CAROLINA-The tarheels may surprise
)like. but it's Luinlikely at this time. This one will give the Blue
)evils the Soul hern Conference Championship.
NORTIIWESTEIRN-lLL1NOIS-Otto Graham and Co. to put
his on the ice early.
PI'RD"E-INDIANA-The fight for the "Old Oaken Bucket"
viii probably be the most spirited contest of the day. Indiana is
n a position for an upset. Purdue is not as strong since the h
lepartire of Tony Buitkovitch. Purdue still gets the nod here. b
DART.\O"fTH-PRN E 'CETON-The big green of Dartmouth
rets the call here.
PITT-PENN- Pcnn rules supreme in tiis one.
ARMY-BROWN-The army is still the strongest here.
