To Literary Societies of
The University of South Carol ina,
The Clariosophic & Euphradian,
Columbia, S. C.
My Dear Fellows:
About the turn of this centurv I inatricu
lated in the South Carolina College. The first
joining I did was the Clariosophie Literary So
eiety, because iy brother, .Jaies Saye Dulsen
bury, now a retired U. S. Army Colonel, and
Parker Ewan Conner, were both rabid fans and
were recruiting, just as were those enthusiastic
rooters for the Euphradian Society.
The jealousy at that time was keen as we did
not have any fraternities and those two socie
ties were the nearest we had to any secret so
cieties-both were jealous in their work and
did much to help green fellows like I was to
get easy on their feet while talking or speaking.
I want to tell you that there is nothing you
can do as a student that will be of any greater
benefit to you than to be at ease as a debater,
orator. reader, declaimer and to become fa
imiliar With the rules of Parliamienta.ry Law.
No matter how you btoVs and young inen
conduct tlie work I can asiure Vou that your
zeal and attention to that work will pay you
great dividends in your after life and maybe
your very life's work will get the foundation
in one or the other sacred walls. These halls
were hallowed and revered in my time. Some
of us never can be developed into those his
tronic arts but even the dumbest should be
given a chance, and how in the world can a
striving lad ever get the polish he must ha-e
unless you Literary boys put him in the coi
petition he should find in the practice you
emulate?
What time you spend let me say, that if you
are earnest in your efforts, that time will be
well spent in everything that you do or what
may be done for you in the training where each
one can stand on his own feet and fend par
liamentarily and in this time when we are so
dlepressed with the demiaznds of war those of
yon that are left at the 01ld stan 1( 1ad(j ure each

Oh, What a Beautiful Morning
It finally happened. I)ue to the stress and strain of being a
columnist. Cele has developed spots before the eyes and a bad
attack of running fits, and has quit for the duration. But don't
erv beaullse. (lite to circumstances beyond your control, here am
I to efficiently carry on, and on. What. won't they think of
next ? 'The only plank of my platform is no little moron joke;
I can't understand them. And if the style of this column has
the vaguest resemblance of that of Winchell, Paglar, Free
Lancing, or Private IIargrove, it will be not only unpremedi
tnted, but ti-uly amazing. So here we go.
The Height Of Something
One fine morn. an ole farmer walked out to his
stable, and what ya kniow, his horse was sick. Not
knowing what to dIo about it, the ole farmer de
eiled to go ask his neighbor, whose horse had been
sick a coupla weeks bel'ore. So the ole farmer
backed out his Model '1' and chugged down the
road to his neighbor's. I is neighbor was sitting
on tile porch reading tle Sears & Roebuck catalog.
"Howdy,'' said the ole farmer.
"llow(dy,'' said the neighbor.
"My horse is sick," said the o. f.
"Too bad.'' said the neighbor.
''What did you do when your horse was sick?''
asked the o. f.
''Fed him (astor oil,'' said the neighbor.
So the ole farmer einigged back home, gave his
horse eastor oil. aid what ya know, in a coupla
weeks ih hortise died. So the ole farmer backed
out his Model T again. an.(d chligge(d hak down
the road to have a word with his neighbor.

''eally !'' said the neighbor.
SWihat happened to your horse when you gave
