Columbia, has been awarded the
Air Medal for meritorious achieve
ment over Sicily, according to a
war department announcement.
Lieutenant Cappelmann is a inem
ber of the North Africa Air Force
Troop Carrier command. He was
a member of an Army Air Forces
Troop Carrier command group
which transported hundreds of
American paratroopers to Sicily
for the initial airborne assault on
the island without the loss of a
single transport ship. "On the
Alumni Front" of August 13, re
ported that he had been commended
by his commanding officer for
courage and devotion to duty in the
arduous July 9 task.
First Lieut. Henry John Clerici,
'37C, of Columbia, has won the
First Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster to
Air Medal for meritorius achieve
nent over Sicily, it has been an
nounced by the war department.
Lieutenant Clerici is a member of
the North Africa Air Force Troop
Carrier command. He was award
ed the air medal several months
ago for his part in carrying troops
from England to North Africa dur
ing the invasion flights of Nov. 7
and 8, 1942. The war department
described the feat at that time as
"the longest massed, unescorted
non-stop troop carrier flight ever
successfully performed" by the
American Air forces. A brother,
Lieut. Louis Nathan Clerici, '35C,

Seennd Lieut. Wyndham Mcre
dith Manning, Jr., '45A, of Sumter,
has won the Air Medal, according
to a report from the war depart
ment. - Lieutenant Manning is an
officer of the U'nited States army
tourteenth Air Porce in China,
commanded by Maj. Gen. Claire
L. Chennault. He entered the air
corps Feb. 2, 1942, and was con
missioned second lieutenant in the
Army Air Force reserve Sept. 29,
1942. He is a pilot.

lins, has been awarded the Silver
Star for gallantry in action, ac
cording to news reaching the
Alumni Office. Lieutenant Smith
has been in the North African war
theatre for several months.
Alfred Holmes (Fritz) von Kol
nitz, '13L, '14s, of Mount Pleasant,
recently promoted to the rank of
lieutenant colonel in the army air
force, has been decorated with the
Legion of Merit, it has been re
ported to the Alumni Office. The
award was made for increasing the
efficiency of the United States air
forces in the European theatre, it
is understood. Colonel von Kol
nitz, who rose to the rank of major
in World War I volunteered at the
outset of the present conflict, and
has been in England for several
months. Alumnus von Kolnitz is
well remembered by many former
students, pro'essors and friends of
the University, who regard him as
one of Carolina's "all-time greats"
in the field of athletics.
