Kappa Sigma_ acroma the CAMPUS By FRANCES PADGETT * Something New . . in the life of Carolina Co-eds took place Monday. Twelve girls were in Vited, by Lieutenant Paddock. to go out to Fort Jack.on and have l I".SS with the soldiers and sell theni tar bonds. It was really a lot of fun. I here was one girl to each tal.le in the miess hall and she entertained all the soldiers at her table. The soldier" didn't have any idea that they would hase their dinner with girlh. so y-ou can imagine how surprised and shocked they %ere when they marched in. Comments vtried butt they all added tip to the fact that the men expected that something mighty funny was aboc ut to happen. Of course the subject of war bonds wasn't mentioned all through dinner so the men had good reason to be suspicious. The girls were a little surprised and di,appointcd to see that tiln plates or trays were not in use. howeter. the huge coffee cuips, sithout handles. made up for the lack of tin. Napkins were used in honor of the gala affair. The girls et tdently did their job well for 8o per cent of the soldiers signed up for hxmds. I i that isn't something to shomt about then we don't know what would be better. With this example everyone of the students here at Carolina should be .willing and eager to do twice what is asked of him. How about it? The girls who journeyed out to the Fort were: Annie Htd-on. Mary Dale Lott, Elicaheth (;ihert. Helen Pride Craig. Charlotte Tuten. Margaret Tucker. Salley Nash, Suzanne Lyles, Frances Padgett, Bitsy LaBorde, Ann Gregorie and Barbara Lee. * ZTA Sorority . . honored their president, Gloria Newlin, with a party in the Colonial room at the Jefferson lIntel last week. Gloria is to e married around the middle of November. The party was front c to ; in the afternoon and sas in the form of a shower. Gloria will be graduated from the University in October. * ATO Fraternity . . initiated four boys Saturday afternoon. They are: Artli'r Jervev. Dan (rimhall, Kinloch Bull and James Henry Walker. l1l. Will Hoic "Dink" Resigns As Dean's Secretary Ronnah Heyward Is Now Mrs. Childs' Assistant "Dink" Gaines Ferguson, "Jill of all Trades" for the iniversity. has sent in her resignation to l'resident I. Rion McKissick. She was granted a leave of absence last December, prior to which she served as secre tarv to Mrs. A. R. Childs, dean of women, tield a : ' for Carolina, lnd as Y secretary. "Dink" has bt ii vell known on the campus since she came here as a freshman in 19:11. She was secre tary of ZTA. corresponding secre tary of the YWCA, member of the YVCA cabinet, Damas. KSK, vice president of AK G, critic and later president of Fuphrosynean. member of the debating council. and presi deut of the Glee Club during her undergraduate years. Afiter graduation she taught in St. Alatthew's for the term of '3., :t6. In the summer of 1936 she came to the University to do field work. She became Mrs. Childs' secretary the following fall, but continued her other work. Wedding bells tolled in October, 1942 when "Dink" became Mrs. HIugh Ferguson. Granted a leave of absence in December, she went to Ft. Smith, Arkan.ac to be with her husband, who is stationed at Ft. Chaffee. Last winter "Dink" taught music appreciation and recreation in Ft. Smith elementary schools. Now she is working w ith high school girl. in the city YWCA and doing USO work at Ft. Chaffee. Rannah Heyward, who has been employed on the campus since her graduation three years ago, is serv ing as secretary to Dean Childs. Chili, dean of women, has received a request from the Surgeon General of the United States that arrangements he made at the t niversity for a vi.it fron: representatives of the Cadet Nurs ing Corps. - Groups sponsored by the federa government are touring the colleges of the I nited States to interest stu dents in taking up nursing. The team scheduled to come to the I'ni versity will arrive sometime in Oc tober, Mrs. Childs stated. The purpose of the tour is to ex plain the Cadet Nursing Corps in the hope of increasing the numbe of nurses in armv and navy service I'pon enrolling in the Corp., th< student nur.es signs up to joir either the army or the navy nursing corps after graduation.
