Beneath the relentless hail of bombs in a Japanese air attack in the
Pacific, Private William C. Hamby, QMC, drove nursa and wounded
to the hospital and went back again and again to bring in more of the
injured. He made seven trips in all and won the Distinguished
Service Cross. How many Third War Loan Bonds can you yourself
afford, to match those seven trips of Private Hamby?

First of all, let's not kid ourselves. And let's not indulge in any
foolish rationalizations about what we're going to do when we "get out
there." We mean right now, and right now the average Carolina student
is worse than useless to this nation's war effort.
We drive down to Myrtle Beach or bat around town on gas tickets
bought from the black market. We wail like so many babies without
their bottles when we can't get what we want to eat or drink. Prob
ably the average English citizen, wandering about Columbia or our
campus, would have serious doubts about just which side we were on.
He could only go by what we do.

Rumors; Truth's Nol
Is Gravitt Really A Sa
Complete Without The G
Not to be outdone by the Bostor
sive newspapers throughout the c
spiking departments in their publi,
similarly aid Carolina by stamping i
malicious local rumors which have rc
First of all, Chief Gravitt is N,

run over it myself. But then."
A few agitators about the cam-4
pus who are obviously short on
patience and long on imagination
have started gossip to the effect
that, merely because the Garnet and
Black is three months late, it is not
coming out. In reply to this, Miss
Mildred Brown, present editor of
the G&B, stated, "Well golly.
Aren't we worth waiting for?
Huh?"
Particularly rife among Navy
students has been a rumor based on
speculations about the unprece
dented number of co-eds coming to
the University for the fall term.
Some have said that after October
a poor sailor won't be safe on the
campus unescorted after dark. We
hasten to say that this rumor is
without basis in fact. The campus
police force is alert, capable, and
ready. Furthermore, although the
facilities of Sims and Wade Hamp
ton will be strained by the task of
housing this particularly large fe
male registration, residents of the
various tenements need have no
fear that impositions will be forced
on them.
A particularly nasty and vicious
part o this hurricane of whisper
campaign came to our attention re
cently when a sophisticated senior
hielsed over a coke in the canteen,
"B- told me that he heard some
one in the back row at a Euphra
dian meeting whisper, 'Life at Car
olina would be complete without
the Gamecock'l" We of course
gasped one of our most gurgling
gasps, placed a discreet finger on
our lips, and hissed back, "Shhhhh.
The very co-eds have ears." We
dragged this deluded soul outside,
reverently uttered the name Robert
Elliot Gonzales, and further bat
tered him back into line with one
of Freeman's jokes. Yes, he rea
lizes now that life at Carolina would
not be complete without the Game
cock, but-we tremble to think of
it-perhaps there are others.
Some of the rumors that have
come to our attention, however,
have been based on unfounded
optimism. Tfake the one about the
Clariosophic Literary Society.
Someone said that they were going
to supply cut glass ash trays and
copies of the Open Road for Boys
by their seats about the campus.
This of course is utter fallacy.
After all they haven't even gotten
them cleaned off yet.

presume one won't be thought too
badly of if he comes out with a
good round Anglo-Saxon invective
when someone throws his math

if Farragut would have lived in his

We wonder if General Sherman's
description of war would still be
considered quite to vivid if he'd
blushed at the crucial moment and
said "War is--(blush) really devil

Or if Rhett Butler would have
achieved his glorious romantic
reputation if he'd taken leave of

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a

Before the decision to have a

So now the old training room
