Footing it with Footsie
By George Faile
We lost. "The breaks were against us," said track coach Pen
ney. "We were rooked," said manager Mack Rudisill and assistant
manager Benjie Knowlton. The cruel fact still stands; we lost.
Clemson took over our state track championship as we lost the state
meet. Carolina's slim squad of eighteen men (managers included)
was vastly outnumbered by the 35 Blue Stockings and the 30 odd
Tigers from Clemson. In the Southern Conference meet at Chapel
Hill, Carolina's six representatives (the smallest squad present) put
up a thrilling fight to tie for fourth p!ace as Clemson and Davidson
finished in much lower position. (We lost to Davidson and Clem
son during the regular season).

* Baseball And Softball
Kay Kirven's baseballers have had some close games this spring
Clthough they have not been as successful as in previous years.
Through recent days and until the end of the semester they are
competing in the newly organized City Baseball League. At this
writing they have w%on from the Columbia Police Department and
lost to Pacific Mills. Picct t. Snoddy, Show, Johnson, Halsall, Allen,
McMillan, and others are still playing while games are played on
Melton Field after five o'clock in the afternoon.
Mention of Melton Field recalls the current intramural soft
ball league which has dwindled to four teams. At a meeting of
the Intramural Council Friday it was decided to have a short
ened schedule for the remainder of the season and to select
an all star team from the teams still in the running. This team
is then to be entered in the Columbia Twilight Sofball League
as representative of the University. This will provide a part of
the summer semester sports program for Carolina fans. A
well balanced team can be selected for there are some good
players in the intramural league.
* More About The Track Team
Pat Thrash slashed his hand corly in the 120 h;gh hurales, but
mas still able to finish third. His hand required eight stitches, but
it did not prevent his running in the mile relay. He gained the lead
on the first lap and George Chamis kept it while Charlie Sloan
dropped the lead when he was shoved sprawling into the cinders.
However, Mac Riley overtook the state champion 4410 man, Franklin
of Clemson, and Timberlake of P. C. Riley's tremendous effort and
brilliant running. were not qLute enough to overcome the distance

* Tuesday's Game And Fame
The Carolina Gamecocks poured in the runs on Tuesday af
ternoon in their game with the Post Engineers as lanky Fred
Snoddy, iird Fireball, struck out 13 men in. the seven inning
game which was called on account of darkness. The Gamecocks
made several errors but took advantage of the roly-poly slow
ness of the Engineers. "Killer" Kay Kirven, efficient catcher,
played a smart game and unlimbered a strong throwing arm on
occasion.

Gym Fact.
All seniors have until May 18th
to make up any excused absence
from Gym. Other undergradates
have until the 22nd.
240 rounds of boxing a day for
a period of over a month is the
new record for the Physical Edu
cation Department. Never in the
history of Carolina have the stu
dents of this time honored institu
tion had so much instruction in the
manly art of Boxing.
The reason intramural boxing
competition was not held is that
time ran out and that there was not
enough interest shown in boxing
despite the amount of instruction
given by Coach DeMars and Chief
Fourier.
