Faculty-Stu Takes Cens File To Be Kept In Office Of USC Business Manager In an official census taken recent ly by a committee of the faculty. student relations group, there wer< 52 recognized University organiza. tions who have meetings, officers and activity. From now on, all of these organi zations will be kept on file in the office of the assistant business man ager, and whenever any change ir officers, or in time and place of meeting, this office must be notitied This is being done, -:aid Dean A. I. Bradley for two reasons: one, to help the University officials in lo cating some person, or in getting information to various groups; and two: to help in the compilation of extra-curricula activities in which a student has engaged, in case this is asked for in a recommendation for employment. There are approximately 18 co-eds in school who have had previous ex perience and can qualify. Dean 0!son said that there may be others of whom lie has no record. Two co-eds, NWillie Frances Sum mers and Ruth Reynolds, joined the band last week. Miss Sununers plays the susaphone, and Miss R ey nolds, the trombone. Band rehearsals are held twice per week, 7 p. n. Monday and 7:30 p. m. Thursday, on the stage of Drayton Hall. At present. re hearsals are in the nature of sight reading classes covering both popu lar and classical music in addition to standard band compositions. A limited number of instruments are available for those who do not have their own. The co-eds who according to Olson, have had pre vious experience are Rebecca Ann Busbee, Myra Lee Hendrick, Gloria Hogg, Mary Cantey, Amy Louise Swarthout, Betty Elaine Kennedy, Betty Edwards Lewis, Sara Bass, Ruth Kerns, Marianne Conder, Jacquelyn Mishoe, Lucy Lee Ar thur, Dorothy Juanita Liet, Doro thy Ann Roof, Willie Frances Sum mers, Carolyn Hodges, and Ruth Reynolds. The Board of Trustees of the University authorized the admis sion of co-eds into the band some months ago. Girls interested in joining the band are asked to see Dean Olson, 103 Harper college. More than 650 students voted in the elections, and Mrs. Nan nie T. Moon, University post mistress, did not receive a single v9tel This is the first time in numerous years that Mrs. Moon has not been a candidate for the office. However, two other new can didates had their names added to the list, as votes were tabu lated Tuesday. "Peanut" Baum and Arthur "Goon" Wilder each received one vote apiece for the honored position of May Queen. As they did not receive a ma jority of votes cast, they will not preside at the May Day festivities. Chaplain McRae of 12th Corps Area Speaks At Chapel Lt. Col. Richard Oliver McRae, chaplain of the 12th Corps Area, spoke to the students of the Uni versity of South Carolina Tuesday, Mar. 30, at 10:30 a. in. in the Uni versity chapel. The topic of Colo nel McRae's talk was the "Thre< Kingdoms in a Person." The speaker said that there wer< three kingdoms in a person, the kingdoms of will, intellect, and emo tions. He pointed out that if th will of a person is bro'ken down there is nothing left. Will mean: life. It is the esteem which drive a person. The second kingdom, intellect dominates the will, stated the chap lain. He said that we build such ggt temple of knowledge ther is danger of it crushing our wills. Colonel McRae spoke of the thir< kingdom, the kingdom of emotions as the keystone of life. The othe: kingdoms are dominated by th emotions. Carelessness Causes Laundry Says ManaS Aficli of the confusion in con nection with laundry at the canteen is caused by carelessness, F. B. Rawl, manager of the University of South Carolina co-operative stores, said this week. A nunher of patrons, especially the pre-flight cadets, fail to use the regular laundry slips available pt the canteen, he said. Some fail to put their names on the slips. 'I'he rcgular bla..ks have an identification numl)er which indicates the laun dry caine from the University. Failure to use these blanks results in delay and sometimes loss of ar ticles, he declared. When a student or cadet uses the regular laundry slip, the package comes back to the University even if lie fails to write his name on it. This brings a grand total of $1,400 for the campus war fund drive. Mr. Lewis said that the Alumni Office will continue to receive con tributionis as long as they keep coming. Campus units that have not obtained their 100% placards still may get them from Mr. Lewis. The University drive, a part of Richland county's campaign to raise $75,000, was sponsored among the students by Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Kappa Gamma. Holloway Leaves Naval ROTC Unit Instructor Baker Goes In Retirement To Farm The Naval ROTC unit has an nounced the transfer of Lt. (j.g.) >arleton Holloway. Lt. Holloway, only recently called to the staff of instructors, has been transferred to fighting duty. While stationed at the University he has been the Freshman instructor of Naval Science and Tactics. Also leaving the unit is Chief G. E. Baker, practical instructor of sailing, rowing, and knot tying. Chief Baker is being placed in re. tirement and intends to return to his former vocation of farming. In reply to questions concerning replacements for these two instruc. tors, Captain Needham stated that no reliefs have been ordered by the Navy department. Members of the deputations team were Polly Fillingim, Isabell Mc Cants, Owens Killingsworth, J. B. Heatherly and David Freeman. The theme of the Vespers pro gram, presided over by J. B. Heath erly, was "Brotherhood and Faith" and the topic of the high school program was, "The Necessity of Staying in School Now." The team sent to Charleston Sun day afternoon will conduct the Vespers program at the Citadel and present a chapel program in Char leston High School the following day. The deputation team headed by Joyce Hetzel, will include Betty Marshall, Jane Brooks Marshall, Betty Fishburn, Armand Bodie and Bob McNair.
