*Footing it with Footsz4v By GEORGE FAILE Though the Gamecocks took some time to warm up, they have settled down to a steady pace which, if continued, will carry them to the top of the Southern Conference as it has already carried them to the top of the state race. They seem destined to repeat as state champions and to go further in the Conference tournament than they did last year. Now we pause for a moieit while the Bird basketeers sweep on at a hot pace and, before trying to properly distribute the credit for their fiished and smooth performances, to introduce the six foot five son of Mr. and Irs. G. M. Faile, otherwise knowii as Footsie, who will give his expert (lie hts warmed the bench in every sport) opinions and advice through the medium of this cornler- of the sports page until Unele says "my army is not big enmugh. Report at once." CAROLINA CAGERS CLICK Returning to the basketball situation, we find that Coach Rex Enright's squad has been winning every game in sight. Coach Enright deserves much praise for the skill with which he has developed these boys into a well-rounded, cooperative-spirited team. Their floor work is beautiful to watch and their sharpshooting ac curacy has experienced improvement. The freshmen on the team have also played a large part in the success of the team. Two of them, Martin and Riddle, are leading the team scoring. The key work done by dependable Earl Dunham is another factor that cannot be over looked. His splendid guard work and effective offensive action stand out in every game. Kelly Mote, Phil Can tore, Bobby Giles, Pat Thrash, and Henry Brogden have turned in fine performances. Fred Snoddy has been out of action recently, but his return to the line-up will bolster the team as it suffers the loss of Brogden who is awaitnng orders from his draft board. VICTORIOUS FROSH Under the direction of their new coach, Jack Keenan, the freshman basketball team has continued to win in the wartime City High School League. This squad de velops the freshmen and gives them an opportunity to play ball in their class. As players are improved suf ficiently, they are promoted to the varsity. "Cyclone" , Cy Waldrop is the first to play in a varsity game from this group. He saw action against Shaw Field Monday night. It is gcad to see the crowds of students who' fill the gym every afternoon, who take advantage of the privilege of keeping themselves in good condition. We advocate a six day per week workout for every stu dent and we urge the board of trustees and others in authority to require all to take Physical Education six days every week. This proved very amusing by his classmates for after swing ing back and forth several times on the rings doing self designed stunts he caught on to a chin ning bar with his hands leaving his feet in the rings. About this time DeMars called all the boys over to his office door for roll call. All but one came. Where was he? The class turned to where they had last ,seen him and,. sure enough, there he was with one foot caught in the ring and hanging by his hands, "possum" style. He called to the class for help, explaining that his shoe was just a little too big and that he was unable to get it out of the ring. EXTENDS 4 TO CAROLINA Sa ALL Toal's Studio )eaten Keenan And Roskie ' Serve As Coaches Dreher Devils Finish Second In City League The high stepping University of South Carolina freshman basket ball team completely swamped a bewildered Dreher high school team .36 to 16 for the City High School league championship Tues day night in the Field House. The scoring was well balanced on the freshman team. Stewart was high man with 9 points. Closely fol- B lowing him were Pike with 8, lack. well. with 7, and Bradford 5. High scorer for Dreher was Salvo with 5 points. The Dreher team was completely outplayed in the first half. At inter mission the score was 16-4 In favor of the Biddies. 'I\ie Blue Devils came back fast in the second hall but were soon left behind by the freshMnien. In winning the championship the freshmen brought to a close a hectic and undefeated season. Start ing out under the tutelage of Ken Roskie, they immediately became the class of the league. When Ros kie left school to confer with his draft board Jack Keenan took over the reins and guided the team to the compIetion of its ten game schedule. The Biddies lead was never seri olsly threatened. The nearest they camie to defeat the entire season was a 35-:3:\ win over O1ympia, which had its reprecussions. In defeating Dreher, the Biddies heat the second best teamT1 in the loop. Dreher had lost only one oth er game. That was to the freshmen earlier in the season. While the freshmen were un beatable in the city loop they were withont the services of Henry Mar- ' tin, liobbY Giles. Furman Riddle, 4 and Pat Thrash, who are starring ior the varsity.
