If it weren't that I am patriotic and don't want to give aid to all the Goimans who wait with baited breath to read this column every week I would certainly discourse at length upon the weather situation . . . and if it weren't that I had been converted by the Christian Mission speakers I would certainly curse vigorously about it . . . and if it weren't that I air too disillusioned I would certainly fall in love to keep me warm . . . and if it weren't that I am half Eskimo and half snowdrop (isn't that ro mantic?) I would certainly freeze . . . and if it weren't that this week is pretty dull along the social line because of all the interest being centered around the speakers, I would certainly not be bothering you with this fascinating tripe. * Bless You, Dear Children More students have succumbed to the charms of the Greeks and have taken upon their puffed chests proud pins . . . Chi Omega is initiating Betty Jane Everett, Ruth Califf, Mary Ellen Jennings next Monday . . SAE initiated Lem Stevenson last week and then celebrated at Ridge wood club . . . Phi Kappa Sigma pledged Bill Tidwell and Bill Furman Tuesday ... and Delta Delta Delta initiated the following girls and then took 'em to supper last night: Ruth Anderson, Betty Coit, Anne Dana Helen Pride Craig, Virginia Fisher, Betsy Walker, and Dot Johnson . . Kappa Sigma has pledged John Ogburn and Willie Heustis . . . and Sigma Chi is initiating Mark Gary Smith this ween-end . . . and Delta Sigma Pi has initiated Joe McFaddin, Kenneth Bridges, and Marion Dantzler. * Merry Christmas Cheer . . . Everybody is jingling bells at holiday parties these days just to keep lessons from getting us down, you know . . . The Delta Zetas are hav ing one Tuesday, and all the big sisters will exchange gifts with their little sisters . . . the Kappa Deltas are all going to church together Sun day, and plan to make it an annual custom that they do so always the last Sunday before school adjourns for Christmas holidays . . . and the KD sisters are also planning a Christmas party Monday night when they will play with their alumnae . . . the Pikers and the ATO's frolicked last night . . . the Pikers at Melrose park, and the ATO's weren't sure where don't jump to conclusions . . . I mean they didn't know where when I wrote this column which was before Thursday . . . and the DDD's will have their annual Christmas pineparty at which they exchange sillp presents with verses attached. * Yeah? . . . In all the inspiring discussions on the campus this week, many well meaning students have wildly professed desires to-quote-do something about it-unquote . . . It being the many and varying problamatic situa , tions ... OK .. . But what? . .. The professors on the campus showed their willingness to keep us hep on the news last spring when the Mon day free period forums were tried . . . you will remember the students drizzled around for a week or two and then fizzled out . . . the adminis tration has at various times publicized the many things students can do in the war effort . . . what happened? . . . that is a purely rhetorical ques tion . . . the KSK and a few highminded girls became air-raid wardens and first-aiders . . . period . . . if anybody is really interested in acting instead of mouthing, there are quite a few professors who would be charmed to he guiding lights . . . and the Red Cross and other organiza tions would love to suggest projects . . . organizations like the Euph rosonean who are thrashing wildly around for some reason for existence, take note . . . or are we just being righteously indignant this week and slightly renigging next week . . . If I may corn a phrase: only time will tell. * More Yuletidings . . . The Sigma Nus are throwing two functions this week, one that the pledges are giving the actives Saturday night and their annual Christmas party Monday night . . . the one I can tell you about is the latter . . - everyone draws names and gives some present accompanied by so-called * poetry bringin out all available dope known by the donor about the re ceiver . . . very jolly . . . and the Sigma Chis are planning a drop-in as an appetizer for their formal next Thursday .- . it will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willoughby Dixon and wvill be for members and their dates only . . . and the Kappa Sigmas celecrated their founder's day yesterday wvith a banquet at the Jefferson Hotel and danced afterwards (music furnished by piccolo, fraternity committee) This is the 73rd year that the good brothers have been good brothers. * Clear Sailing... Some one of our loveliests will be sailing high to-night when the Naval ROTC announces its queen for the year at the ball tonight . . . in spite of the fact that she will be the second queen of the year, the first being Betty Brady, Independents queen, with the may queen still to come, this will be a very special honor . . . for when the United States navy is mak ing us all so button-bursting proud, what girl wouldn't give her three favorite lieutenants to be "sweetheart of the navy"-congratulations, Miss anonymous. * The Gay Dogs... The more columnia I write the more I think I better retract my state * ment about this being a mild week ..,. Cause the Pi Lambda Phis weiner roasted at Earlewood park Sunday, and played afterwards . . . and the freshman Y banquet was reported a howling success . .. Congratulations to all the hard-working gals who made it so . . . besides the unbeatable food and talks and toasts, the crowning howl of the evening was when Dr. McKissick laid aside his dignity and did the thing all students hope to get a chance to see once in a college lifetime . . . he hid his song and dance . . . I didn't see it but I go in hysterics at the deschiption . . . it seems he puts his finger on the top of his head and hops around in a circle singing: "I'm a little prairie flower, growing wilder every hour," etc . . . What do we have to do to get that at chapel next week, sir? . and the Clemson boys are coming down to put on a Vespers program .this Sunday . . . after the service there will be a party for them in Flinn Hall, and you're invited . . . there won't be enough to go around, girls, but we can divide 'em up . . . and just to help Marion Singletary win a bet, Jules, there is your name. * Mission Chatter... All the boys seem to be so enthusiastic about this year's mission... one question, please . . . is it because of the in. piration or because the charming lady speakers broke the time-old rule and spoke in the tena Sments . . . that's all right, and what a break . . . you must have arranged that Wednesday night black-out just to fit in with the program . . . what a prank . . . however, the co-eds had motives and motives for attending the meetings too . . . as one co-ed said, "I didn't listen to a thing he said, I was so busy seeing how pretty he was. ..". ..until another year and another mission huh? Elcti.an eh out.. ofRevery.BET Pag -ree 9 Til l Dance Formally Opens New Naval Armory On Campus Carolina's only military dance, the annual Compass and Chart Ball will be held tonight at 9:00 p. m. at the new Naval ROTC Armory. The ball as in former years will feature the crowning of a queen with impressive ceremonies who will reign over the dance. She will be crowned by Capt. R. C. Needham, comman dant of the NROTC unit, and pre sented with ring by the Compass and Chart society. Iler identity will be kept secret until the coronation. This will be the first dance ever held in the recently completed NROTC armory. The decorations will be in blue and gold. Music will be furnished by Melvin Hemphill and his band. In the receiving line will be Cap tain and Mrs. Needham, Dr. and Mrs. J. Rion McKissick, McIver Ri ley, president of the society, and Miss Peggy Forbes. Sponsors for the dance are: Peggy Forbes, for McIver Riley, president; Harriet Gue, for Robert Patterson, vice-president; Jane Blackwell for Jack Tobias, secretary; Harriett Hope Shuler for Van Earl Fillin gim, treasurer; Jane Middlebrooks, for Tom Stevenson, chairman of the decoration committee; Ann Boyle for Bill Chalker, cha*-man of the pub licity committee; Virginia Stern for Jack Ditler, chairman of the invita tions committee; Jane Fishburne for Bobby Bleakly, chairman of the pro gram committee, and Mary Douglas Swearingen for David Freeman, freshman representative. The Compass and Chart society was formed three years ago to in still naval traditions, and inspire a closer friendship among the NROTC students. It is composed only of NROTC boys. The faculty adviser is Lt. H. A. MacDonald. Cowan Speaks At General YW Meet Yesterday The reverend T. B. Scotty Cowan spoke to the meeting of the general YWCA meeting yesterday afternoon at 4:15 in Wade Hampton. Rev. Cowan is pastor of the Pres byterian church in Norris Dam, Tenn,. and has spoken at the Uni versity of South Carolina Chris tian Missions for the past two years.
