But the Tarheels did it Saturday. There's not much use arguing
about why they did it, because that's no question. They put a red hot
team on the field, and that team beat the Gamecocks.
The Birds were pretty tired from a hard trip, and that may account in
some amount for their defeats. Each man seemed to play his heart out
in an attempt to beat the Tarheels, but the team as a whole was not
the smooth, clicking machine that stalemated the Tennessee squad the
week before.
The promised offensive didn't develop. The defense wasn't up to the
performance of the week before. The Bird's line didn't get through to
rush the 'Heels' runners. The Bird's line didn't keep the North Caro
lina men from smearing a lot of our runners before they left our back
field. Blocking was definitely not up to par. Too often the runner
found himself with no forward wall to help him through a rough time
with the Tarheels. Too often, a tarheel was blocked, but not put on
the ground, and made the tackle.
Mouse Halsell and Earl Dunham played good ball. John Leitner
managed to get in on most of the tackles that were made behind the
'Heels' scrimmage line, and generally rushed more than any other player.
Ken Roskie had to leave the game in the first quarter because of an in
jury, and that undoubtedly had a lot to do with slowing the Gamecock's
offense. As to other reasons, remember that the Tarheels are showing
themselves to be one of the great teams of the nation, beating Wake
Forest who knocked off the great Duke. One other word about the
game. The student body of the UNC showed itself to be the greatest
sports in the world in defeat last year. Congratulations to our student
body who displayed the same spirit while visiting last week.
* WEST VIRGINIA MAY BE HOT TO HANDLE
Tomorrow the Birds go on a longer trip to clash with West Virginia.
As I said when I began this writing two weeks ago, I'm no authority
on the subject, however, I should think that this is going to be no push
over. West Virginia took a heck of a beating from Boston College last
week, true, but I look on this as an ill omen.
They're supposed to be a team with real power, and no pushover for
any opposition. With a defeat of 38-0 stinging their prestige, they'll be
out to show their stuff to us tomorrow. The Gamecocks, however, have
the same condition. The Birds would like very much to show us and
the nation that they are a real power. Well, Gamecocks, GIVE 'EM
iELL, from the Carolina student body. West Virginia is a little too
far for me to hitchhike.
* STUDENT SPIRIT MUST KEEP UP
The birds have upset one, and have lost one. The student body has
been ietty well spirited all along, but can do better. At North Caro
9 lina some of the spirit seemed to ebb toward the last few minutes, and
the cheer leaders had a little trouble getting any response, though this
may be because the students were not as close to the hep, hep leaders as
usual, being high up in the stands.
The fact that about 150 of the South Carolinians showed up despite
gas, tire and what not rationing showed a pretty good spirit. We'll have
to keep it up during the entire season. The Birds showed us in the
opener that they can show us some ball to cheer for, and if they. do, or
even if they lose playing their best, the student body will stick to them.
In a personal vein, we find Miss Dot Hart of the Winthrop "John
sonian" making remarks in her column to the effect that the Sports
Editor of the Gamecock ain't so bright, which may be true enough but
should not be mentioned in a paper which prints a seven column stream
er spelling "morale", m-o-r-a-l. . . topping that off, my dear Miss Hart,
by spelling Perusing in your own column as persuing. Tch, tch.
All of which has nothing to do with the Gamecocks beating hell out
of West Virginia, so we stop such well earned remarks.

Lack Of Reserves
Causes Injuries

With a draft-depleted squad of
only 29 varsity players, the Univer
sity of South Carolina football squad
hjs emerged from two bruising
games, evidently in need of some im
mediate relief if it Is to complete
successfully the remainder of a sched
ule listing the hardest opponents in
years.
That Is the sentiment prevalent
among the athletic officials at Caro
lina, which found expression in the
fact that when the Gamecocks en
trained last Wednesday for tomor
row's game with non-conference
West Virginia, four freshmen went
along. Three backs and one line
man were taken along to bolster the
varsity, already suffering from in
juries due to the necessity of regu
lars playing full time instead of be
ing relieved for rest during their
more fatiqued moments on the grid
iron.
As a result of the lack of reserve
strength during the two games open
ing the season, five Gamecock regu
lars are suffering from superficial
injuries, which definitely cuts their
effectiveness, and may remove some
of them from the starting lineups for
the remainder of the schedule. Ernie
Bauer, guard, has been off the first
string since an injury to his leg early
in the season.
In the backfield, Ken Roskie, Earl
Dunham, Glen Rice, and "Mouse"
Halsell have been out of scrimmages
as a result of injuries.
In an effort to find relief from the
oressing problem of lack of reserves,
Coach Rex Enright has appealed to
the Southern Conference to allow
freshmen to play on the varsity squad,
in conference games. With this ad
dition to the squad, Enright feels
that the regulars could be relieved
after playing a particularly rough
period, thereby reducing injuries.
At this writing, no definite steps
have been taken to decide freshmen
eligibility, except requests sent to the
president of the Southern Conference
from various conference coaches.

Coach Carries Four
Frosh With Team
A good crowd of students cheered

nesday night as they entrained in

town, W. Va. where Saturday the
University of South Carolina meets
the University of West Virginia.
The Gamecocks, 26 varsity players
and 4 freshmen, will probably be
hampered because of injured Earl
Dunham and Ken Roskie. Neither
were in uniform till Wednesday;
thus getting only one day of prac
tice.
The four freshmen making the trip
are backs Billy Rutland, Bettis Her
long and Jack Couch and end Pat
Thrash. It is probable that they will
play if it becomes necessary. It may
become imperative because of the
scarcity and injured condition of
backs.
West Virginia, a non-conference
school, will present a 55-man squad
of Mountaineers. There are 13 fresh
men listed on the W. Va. roster and
they are eligible to participate in
varsity sports.
Coach Rex Enright has been drill
ing his squad on running and pass
ing offense this week. Emphasis has
been placed on defense of West Vir
ginia's plays. The squad practiced
defending the kicker also this week
after allowing North Carolina -to
block a punt last Saturday.
The Gamecocks arrived in Morgan
town at 5:30 p. m., yesterday and will
have today t9 rest before their clash
