Boosters Club To Pi

The University of South Caro
lina's Boosters' Club was reorgan
ized this year with J. B. Heatherly
elected as chairman, and Jane
Brooks Marshall as co-chairman.
This club is a continuation of the
one started by Ed Patterson last
year in an endeavor to promote
school spirit at Carolina.
Four committees will compose the
Boosters' Club, and any student may
become a member of any committee
if he or she chooses. Posters will be
put up the first of the week with
the name of the various commit
tees and their chairmen. As yet the
chairmen have not been chosen, but
the committees will be: decoration,
finance, publicity, and activities.
Chairman J. B. Heatherly has
announced a five dollar prize for
the best "Beat Tennessee" sign, and
additional rewards will be offered
for other home rames.

Commando Trained

Army officers graduated from
Texas A. & M. college in the future
not only will be well grounded in
established military tactics but
plans are now under way to train
them in Commando practices, ac
cording to Col. Maurice D. Welty,
professor of military science and
tactics and commandant at the col
lege.

unit, ROTC, has been placed ir
charge of the Commando training
and, with co-operation of the colleg<
landscape art department, has de.
signed a cross country course that
should fit a soldier for almost an3
hazard he might find in combat.

To Pep Meeting
All freshmen, upperclassmen,
graduates, members of the faculty,
and other University of South Car
olina boosters are urged, implored,
and beseeched to meet at the chapel
tonight at 7 p. m. to form a shirt
tail parade as an ante-climax to the
varsity game with Tennessee to
morrow afternoon.
Led by Roger Kirk, head-cheer
leader, and his crew of "pepper
heppers" the parade will proceed
from the chapel, four abreast, down
Main St., to the Jefferson hotel.
Reaching that point, a snakedance
will be formed and will wind its way -
back to the freshmen football game C
at Melton Field. The parade will "
be completed before game-time and
seats will be reserved for those tak
ing part in it.
Cheerleader Kirk is expecting the
whole student body to be present at
this pre-game ceremony. As Kirk v
soaptly put it, "Let's all get imbued <
with that traditional Carolina spirit 9
and show the team we're with them t

Jui Jitsu Course
Out of the war has come many
and varied changes in the curricu
lum at the University of South Car
3. olina, but one course has been added
as the result of heavy demand from
ithe students which is destined to
53 become more and more popular as
.. the war progresses.
.This course, one with three
credits, is a study of Jui jitsu, judo,
(modern jui jitsu), boxing, and
wrestling. Dr. John A. Crawford,
long experienced in wrestling, is of
fering the course to ~anyone inter- (
ested'at 12 p. m. Tuesdays, Thurs
days, and Saturdays in the Field
House. Those who are not taking
the course are invited to sit in on
the classes at any time.
Following the rigorous require
ments for the commandos and the
strenuous training required of the
men in service, a group of students
formed a committee to ask for a
class such as this. The faculty
readily assented to this request.
In past years a wrestling team
has been started, but lack of In
terest has interfered with its organi
zation.

To Harden For Army
The University of South Caro
lina's enlarged physical educftion
program got under ,way with the
beginning of classes.: Every student,
unless physically unable, is enrolled
in the new program.
Rex Enright, director of athletics
at the University, launched the pro
gram in which nearly 1,700 men
and women are taking active part.
The main purpose for the new
program is to physically prepare
the men for duty in the armed
forces. South Carolina is only one
of hundreds of institutions that have
installed an enlarged program.
Miss Frances Pope is in charge
of physical education for women
and her classes include volley ball,
basketball, archery and folk dances. y
Frank DeMars and Chief petty
officer Fourier of the Navy are in
structing the men. The new outline
for men's physical fitness program
includes everything from football to
swimming.
Men will be graded according to
their achievement in the various
phases of the training. Points are
given for each part of the program
and the maximum total is 105. Sev
enty points must be earned for a
passing grade.
