6.:AMECOC1 tI Gamecock Gaff I By DON MERRICK CAROLINA STATE CHAMPS C IN THREE SPORTS x As I come to the end of the road as sports editor of The Gamecock, " my main hope for Carolina athletics is for the Bird's destinies to be as c% bright as they have been the past year. Head Coach Rex Enright started things off this past fall, by tam- h ing the Clemson Tiger at the Fair Grounds 18 to 14. in a game that will long be remembered by Carolina students. The Birds went on to win the mythical state championshiv in football, by whipping The Citadel and Furman. to leave no doubt in anyone's mind as to who w had the best eleven in the state. Carolina's basketballers ushered in the 1942 season by winning the state championship in the court game g and in addition, continued their winning ways over the Bengals, by ti defeating the Tigers twice. Coach Frank Johnson's quintet didn't cz fare so well in the annual basketball tourney at Raleigh, when they a were eliminated in the first round of the tournament by N. C. State. b< The Gamecocks placed two men on the first state quintet, which was more than any other school in the state did. Preston Westmoreland dc and Stan Stasica of the Birds were the two men on the first squad. :2 Their third state championship was annexed last Saturday at Clinton, K where the track and ield championships of South Carolina were held. of J. T. Penney's cindermen walked away with the meet, when they col- dh lected 75 1-2 points to Clemson's 44. Th'lie week before the state get ai together, the Bird thin clads defeated the Bengals in a dual meet, 71 to 60. 1i6 TRACKSTERS COME THROUGH AT STATE MEET dr 10 The Carolina tracksters rang up a total of 75 1-2 points last Satur day in Clinton, to win the eighteenth annual South Carolina inter collegiate track and field meet. In winning, the Birds brought to an end the monopoly the Clemson Tigers had on the championship. Our tracksters were way ahead of the second place Bengal team, who only had 44 points to its credit. The Tigers just did manage to get in the runner-up spot, for the Presbyterian team were pressing the Tigers all the way. The Blue Hose got 40 1-2 points, and Furman was last with only five points. Four varsity records were broken during the afternoon, and two of these were broken by Carolina men. "Scooter" Rucks of Carolina, set a new mark in the (uarter mile, when lie ran this event in 50 seconds (Ir flat, breaking the old record of 50.2 seconds set by Clark of Presbyterian. tal The other record breaking performance by the Gamecocks, came (11 in the last event of the afternoon, when the Bird mile relay team of lic Riley, Rice, Blouin, and Rucks ran the mile in 3 minutes, 24.3 seconds. e This new mark smashed the old mark set by Presbyterian eight years ago, by 3 seconds. fe Cleo Fennell of Clemson set a new pole vault record at 13 feet four (" inches. The other iark broken was in the sso, set by Harry Franklin ta of Clemson. 0 TRACK COACH PENNEY Y DOING FINE JOB 0 Since the departure of Sterling Agnew DuPree last June to the armed s forces of the United States, Jim Penney, who was prior to this year a ii whole hearted biologist, decided to take over the destinies of the Caro lina track team. In his first year as head track mentor, Penney lead his track pupils '1 to the first state championship they have garnered in several years. A The Birds have dropped only one out of four dual meets this spring which is b)atting at better than a 500 average. By the time this colun goes to press, we will have either wvon or th-opped the dual meet to N. C. State. ENRIGHT HOPES FOR t THE BEST t Head Football Coach Rex Eniright is just hoping for the best next fall. That is about all he can do at this stage of the game. In such ~ critical and uncertain times, little can be said of what football ph:iy- 4 ers will be back, and which ones will not. Besides the uncertainty of sonie of the veterans returniing, Coach En- a right will lose thirteen seniors by. graduation, which is going to hurt no f matter what hiappeuns. .p Enright will have some promising freshman prospects coming up next year which look awful good. Herlong, Paschal and Rutland are the three freshmen I have in mind. LAST GO ROUND WITH GAMECOCK GAFF . .. It's a p)retty truie saying that all p)leasant things have to conme to an end ' sometimes. For those few who have ever ventured to read this column, - I want to say that I have gotten a great dleal of pleasure out of writing these few lines each wveek and I would like to express my appreciation to the six fellows who have stuck it out with me all semester: Leonard Turnbull, Garden Ilill, Othneil Wienges, Red Ballentine, Bill Tfimmons and Vernon Sloan. At this time, it makes me very happy to announce your old friend and new sports editor, Leonard Turnbull. Leonard is not a new comer to the job, but an old hand at it. Those of you who were here last spring, remember Leonard's sports column 'BULL' with 'Bull. His first try at the job was good, but you can rest assured that the second time will even be better. Leonard is a fine news paper man, and knows his sports through and through, so I'll leave it with 'Bull and call it a day-with one prediction, that the Gamecock footballers continue in their winning ways next fall and defeat the Clemson Tigers. Carolina will be seeking revenge for a 6 to 5 licking handed to them the Tigers several weeks ago at Clen ion. Tigers hold third position the state race with an equal number of wins and losses. Carolina is urth with three wins against seven losses. Southpaw Ray Player will probably get the nod to start against tile lemson diamond crew. Player baffled the Wofford Terriers for seven nings with shut-out pitching. le yielded four hits in the last two in ngs of the fray for the 3 to 0 win. Coach Ted Petoskey pronounced the condition of the Gamecocks ex llent for the game. Roskie, Leitner, Dunham, Holliday, Fillingani, [ilner and Tate will be in the starting lineup of the Birds. Tile slants of Faust, Terrier hurler, proved no puzzle for the Game )cks in the first inning. Leitner led off with a single into short center. [olliday and Dunham rolled out. Milner came to the plate and knocked ut a double, scoring Leitner. The next upheaval of the Gamecocks came in the fourth inning with single by Ken Roskie, third baseman. le was sent to third with a xuble by George. Both came home with a single by Fillingam, and - ic scoring was tip for both sides during the gane. Wofford started a rally of their own in the eighth inning when Faust ngled and Wall doubled but the Birds were able to squelch the rally, ad the ball game was over. Carolina collected nine hits off the offerings of Faust. Leitner slapped ree hits out of four appearances at the bat for the Birds.
