rBird Track: Gamecock Gaff By DON MERRICK TRACKSTERS IN STATE MEET Carolina's red hot cindermen begin the first round of the state meet this afternoon in Clinton, when they have it out with five of South Carolina's best track teams, Clemson, Furman, Presbyterian, The Citadel and New berry. The Birds are favored to cop the meet, as a result of their ii pressive victory over the Bengal thin clads last Saturday afternoon at Melton Field by a 71 to 60 score. The Birds showed up exceptionally well in the dashes, with Mac Riley unofficially shattering the 220-yard dash record, by running this event in 21.8 seconds. Riley looks to be the best in the field in the short distances as he defeated Dickson of the Tigers. who had pre viously been undefeated in the state. Mac has a good chance to set a new mark in the century, for in the meet with Davidson earlier in the season, he was clocked at 9.7 seconds and at The Citadel meet at 9.9. "Scooter" Rucks, Carolina's hope in the quarter mile, still remains un defeated in his specialty, by winning from Graham of the Bengals last Saturday. Ii Rucks draws the inside lane in the finals tomorrow, he has a good chance to set a new mark. KRIVONAK GUNS FOR RECORD Big Joe Krivonak, who has been tossing the shot put all over the field this spring, gave a preview in the Tiger meet of what he hopes to do today and tomorrow at the Clinton get together, by bettering the record for this event by five inches. Joe tossed the shot 48 feet 5 inches. The fourth mark which is in danger of falling. is held by Clemson's pole vaulter. Cleo Fennell, at 13 feet one inch. Against the Birds, Fen nell broke his own record by two inches. It seems as if he will have little trouble in bre;king his own mark and establishing a new one. These are just a few records your scribe thinks will topple, but don't be surprised if some of the others fall by the wayside. Although the Birds hurdler Jack Little, didn't shatter any records, he collected' two first and a second in Saturday's meet to be high scorer. In order to come out on top in the finals tomorrow, the Birds will have to cop first in the dashes, and get more seconds and thirds in the other events than they did last week. BASEBALLERS STILL IN TROUBLE The Gamecock diamond crew broke even in last week's engage ments, when they dropped a tough game to Clemson by omuy one run, 6 to 5, and defeated Erskine's Fleet, 5 to 1. In the game with the Bengals, the Birds were leading 5 to 3 up to the eighth inning, when Blalock of the Bengals singled, Mimms walked, and second baseman Good singled Blalock home, to put the Tigers only onc run behind. With Mimms and Good on third and second, right fielder Herring bunted to bring Minms in with the tying run, and Good score( the winning run from third on a play at first. Waldo lvman, Bird pitcher, allowed only six hits in eight innings, but the breaks wenti against him. The baseballers jumped over to Due West after playing the Ti gers in Clemson. to take on the Erskine Fleet. Carolina got two runs in the first inning to take an early lead, and from then on out, the Birds were never headed. They got one more in the second, one in the third and one in the ninth. Erskine got their lone tally in th4 second inning. The Birds got eight hits to five for the Fleet, and only left five strande( on the hase'naths as comparedl with thirteen by Erskine. Tomorrow afternoon, Petoskey takes his team to Newberry, to face the Indians, who now occupy second place in the state. The Gamecocks still rest in fourth place in the state standings with a 4-4 -record. WELCOME HIGH SCHOOLERS Over a thousand high school students, from South Carolina, are pay ing a visit to their State University in Columbia, with one of two pur poses, that of comp1eting in scholastic te.' or to take part in the sport ing side of high school wecek. Tennis and track engagements are holding the high schoolers in terest this week end. In the tennis matches, the boys are using the varsity tennis courts, in addition to the Forest Hills and Ridgewood courts. -TENNIS TEAM MEETS THE CITADEL The Bird netnmen will be seeking their second victory of the seasor this afternoon on the varsity tennis courts, when they meet The Citade cadets. Last Saturday afternoon, the Gamecocks played host to the Geor gia Evening College netters, but dropped the match, 8 to 1. The No. 2 dcubles combination of Haynes and Hatch, came through for the Bird's only victory, but were extended to three sets to do so. Last Friday afternoon the Gamecocks were dlefeated by the Furmat netsters, 6 to 2. Jack H-atch and Gene Hlaynes were the only Carolim players to take a match. Both men were extended to three sets. The tennis team has had a tough season, but considering the lack of interest shown toward the team they have done pretty well. STUDENTS! Carolina's No. 3 man, Jack Hatch won his match, but had to go three sets to do it. The only other match the Gamecocks won was that played by Gene Haynes. Haynes won his match in straight sets. Block "C" athletes won over the Pi KA's and Tenement 29 nipped Company A of the Naval ROTC, both games by the forfeit route. Tenement 19 outslugged the Sigma Chi's by the merciless score of 14 to 5.
