Birds Meet
Gamecock Gaff
By DON MERRICK
BIRDS VERSUS P. C. TODAY-MELTON FIELD
Today Carolina's fly chasers will play host to the Presbyterian
Blue Hose on Melton Field in the second meeting of the two
clubs this season. Earlier in the month, the Blue Hose gave
the Bird nine a severe 10-1 licking. In that encounter, the
Bird's two pitchers, Jeep Rogers and Marcus Stark gave up
seventeen hits, while P. C's. hurler, Clyde, struck out nine Bird
batsmen. The Carolina team was hktd to two safeties, garnered
by Kirven and Dunham.
The Bird batswingers have just returned from their rather
disastrous Torheel jaunt, where they dropped three games.
The Gamecocks lost their first Tarheel tilt to UNC, 12-1 and
their second, 20-4 to N. C. State, while the Duke Blue Devils
shutout the Gamecocks lost Tuesday afternoon, 13-0.
Carolina's horsehiders are ready for a comeback after their
poor early season start, and the Petoskeymen promise to give
the Hose a run for their money this afternoon.
BASEBALLERS IN FOURTH PLACE
Carolina's Gamecocks are resting in fourth place in the Pal
metto baseball race at this writing. The Birds have a record
of two wins against five losses. In their first State win this
season, the Gamecocks defeated the Wofford Terriers in a
close ball game, 2-1. Furman was the other team to go down
before the Bird onslaught, 10-5.
Newberry and Presbyterian's Blue Hose hold the top rung of
the ladder at the present time, with four wins a piece against
one setback.
Clemson's Tigers are in the third spot with three wins against
four bad ones. Carolina, Erskine, Furman and Wofford finish
out the rest-of the State standings.
Including today's game, the Birds play eight more games.
These are all with State teams, and will determine whether the
Gamecocks will finish up near the top of the State race. The
Birds have two tussles with their ancient rival, Clemson before
the season is over.
BIRDS NEED MORE HITTING
So for this year, the Carolina nine has lacked punch at the
plate. In their recent North Carolina trip, the Gamecocks
didn't garner over four hits a game, and were held scoreless in
their last encounter with the Blue Devils.
Coach Petoskey's chief worry at the plate is to get a clean-up
man in fourth spot in the lineup. Kirven, Holladay and Dun
ham have been one, two, three in the batting order all season,
but Petoskey hasn't been able to find a consistent batter for
clean-up. le has been experimenting with George and Hyman
in fourth spct, when the latter isn't hurling.
The Birds will need more punch at the plate if they expect to
get by this year's strong State teams.
PITCHING NOT UP TO PAR
Player, .Hyman, Rogers, Stark and Crawford are sharing
mound duties this spring, but so far, Petoskey hasn't found a
winning pitcher out of these five.
Ray Player has been getting more starting roles than any of
the pitchers, and in the early innings, has been holding opponents
bats in check.
With more hitting and fewer errors, the Bird pitching will
hold up against the rest of the State teams on the schedule.
CINDERMEN MEET THE CITADEL TOMORROW
Carolina's thin clad tracksters will attempt to continue their
winning ways tomorrow afternoon, when they journey to the
City by the Sea, and take on the Cadet team in a dual meet.
The Bird tracksters came back after the drubbing they took
from Davidson April 1, to trounce Presbyterian 's supposedly
strong team last Saturday, 80 1-3 to 54 1-3. Carolina lead all
the way during the meet, and were led by Krivonak and Riley,
who chalked up ten points a piece to lead the Gamecocks scor
ing. Little and Rucks of the Gamecocks were not far behind
with 8 and 7 points a piece. Aiken, pulling the "iron man''
stunt for the Blue Hose by winning the mile and two mile race,
was high scorer'of the meet with fourteen points.
Mac Riley continued undefeated so far this season in his two
specialties, the century and the 220. He captured both of these
events against P. C. Against Davidson, Mac ran the century
in 9.7, one of his best times for this event. "Scooter" Rucks in
his first year of varsity competition, is showing up fine in the
220 and 440 yard dashes. Last Saturday, he was close on
Riley's heels in the 220, and continued undefeated this year, by
winning his specialty, the quarter mile in the good time of 51.2
seconds.
Coach J. C. Penney leads his tracksters against the Clemson
Tigers, next Saturday in the last dual meet before the State
Meet at Clinton on May 2. After the annual State tussle, the
Birds will have one more dual meet with N. C. State in Colum
bia on May 9.

Track Due!
Two fireball dash men are
currently leading the Univer
sity of South Carolina track
team in the 1942 season. One,
a slow talking and fast sprint
ing southerner, and the other,
a fiery northerner, form a duet
in the dashes that blazes away
from opponents.
MacIver Riley is the veteran
southerner from Allendale
focusing on another state
championship in the 100 and
220-yard dashes. "Scooter"
Rucks is from Long Island,
N. Y., and is showing other
southern colleges how to run
the 220 and 440-yard races.
Last year Riley was unde
feated in state competition, and
won the 100 and 220-yard races
at the annual state meet at
Clinton. He broke the track
record at The Citadel when the
Gamecocks met the cadets in a
regular dual. He trotted away
with the 100-yard da'sh in 9.7
seconds.
Rucks is a former state cham
pion in the 100-yard dash of
New York high schools. In the
100 and 220-yard dashes he was
undefeated in his state during
his last year of high school.
This year the dash duet have
kicked cinders in the eyes of
their two opponents, P. C. and
Davidson. Against the two
teams Riley won the 100 and
220-yard dashes. Rucks fol
lowed second in the 220-yard
dash, and won the 440-yard run.

Erskine was the next visitor to
Columbia and at the end of the sev

This must have knocked some of
the wind out of the Gamecocks for
two days later, with P. C. playing
host, the Blue llosemen soundly
spanked the Birds, 10-1. This is the
defeat that the Gamecocks will be
fighting to avenge this afternoon.
The Gamecocks finally won their
first game. As a result of 3 hits by
Earl Dunham which drove in two
