Naval ROTC Unit Under
Hall Has Grown To 130;
One Of Nation's Finest
Capt. R. A. Hall, organizer and com
mandant of the Naval ROTC unit at
the University since its inception in
1940 has been ordered by the -Navy
department to head the department
of English history and government
at the United States Naval Academy
in Annapolis.
Replacing Captain Hall will be
Capt. R. C. Needham of the depart
ment of engineering at the Naval
Academy.
Captain Needham is a graduate of
the class of 1907 at the Naval Acad
emy and is a native of Massachusetts.
Under Captain Hall's guidance, the
Naval ROTC unit here has grown
to 130 members, and become one of
the finest and best trained in the
country.
Hie was instrumental in the secur
ing and designing of the new $180,000
Naval ROTC armory now under con
struction.
"The whole University deeply re
grets the departure of Captain Hall.
He has rendered the finest type of
service and cooperation to our in
stitution and to our country in
establishing and efficiently carrying
on our Naval ROTC unit. He takes
with him the good will and the
high esteem of our students, faculty
and administration", Pres. J. Rion
McKissick said.
Prior to coming to the University
he was operations officer of the 11th
Naval district at San Diego, Calif.

Tucker In Chapel
Luther Tucker, a traveler in Chin;
and a former Japanese prisoner, wa

gram on Tuesday, April 14.
Mr. Tucker was doing religion
work in China and enroute home wa
arrested for espionage by the Japanes
government after delivering a lec
ture to a group of Japanese students
He spoke to the students at the Uni
versity on behalf of the World Stu
dent Service Fund.
Mr. Tucker surprised the student
by telling them that he had not bee1
mistreated by the Japanese and tha
they were courteous and fed him well
He used this fact to put over th

war prisoners and others.

The catalogue for the summer
school session for 1942, June 9 to
August 1, has been mailed to all
teachers in the state, according to
Dr. J. A. Stoddard, director of the
summer school.
Doctor Stoddard also said that his
office was sending letters to all high
school graduates and to the members
of high school Beta Clubs, informing
them that they may attend three sum
mer sessions and three regular ses
sions of the University and thus
shorten their college careers by one
semester.
Faculty members who will make
their first appearance on the summer
school staff this year are: Dr. How
ard Earl Carr, adjunct professor of
physics in the University; Dr. E. C.
Hunter, professor of education, Con
verse College; Dr. Thomas Walter
Herbert, adjunct professor of English
in the University; and Mr. E. W.
Rusliton, state supervisor of high
schools, Columbia, S. C.
Several new courses will be given
this summer. Biology S120, Health
Education, will be offered by Doctor
Penney and Doctor Ayers, and will
carry three credits. This is a non
laboratory course in the principles of
nutrition and the factors involved in
community health. It is designed for
public school teachers.
Education SI29, Backgrounds of
War, carrying 2 credits, will be pre
sented by Mr. Ward, assisted by sev
eral lecturers.
