the university under the grand total
during the regular and summer ses
eions of 1941-'42, as against 3,735 reg
istered last year. This grand total
represents the number enrolled in the
civilian pilot training program, ex
tension classes and the engineering
science and management defense
training programs also.
An editorial in the New York
Times recently stated that the aver
age drop in college registration is
from five to twenty per cent. Actual
student enrollment at the University
for the regular session this year re
veals a drop of only 3.9%, well under
the average drop for American col
leges.
"The officials of the University are
gratified and pleased with this excel
lent record and likewise surprised that
the enrollment did not show a larger
decrease in the national emergency,"
Mr. Chase said.
"The University is one of the few
institutions in the country that can
claim such a small decrease," he
added.
Regular session enrollment this
year is 1,927, and the totals last year
show this to be a drop of 77 students
from the former 2,004 enrollment.
1,579 persons are now enrolled at
the University in the regular session
for the second semester, and 1,774
were entered here for the first semes
ter. This i a drop of 195, thc bulk
of which is men who were called into
or ertered the armed services.
Of these totals, 1,141 were men and
633 women in the first semester and
977 men and 602 women this semes
ter.
Of the 1,927 who have enrolled in
1941-'42, 1,215 were men and 712
were women; '40-'41 totals show that
1,295 were men and 709 were women.
The grand total of 4.594 this year
was made up as follows: total en
rollment for regular session, 1,927;
summer session enrollment, 748; ci
vilian pilot training program, summer
session, 18; extension classes, 1941
'42, 1,131 ; civilian pilot training pro
gram, 1941-'42, 22; engineering de
fense training program, 1941-'42, 748.

ganization of nations to be set tip
after the peace.
"This organization must have pow
er to carry out its program. It must
be able to say to any nation, 'Thou
shalt not make over a certain amount
of arms,' and be obeyed.
"Economic pressure will gradual
ly bring reluctaut nations to terms.

and Rhode Island who at first re
fused to join the Union. Later they
did. Why? The several states,
among other things, effected econonic
discriminations which forced them to
see the advisability of joining.

Dr. Arthur M. Barnett, a
medical missionary to Kenya
Colony in Africa, has requested
the University to replace his
diploma which went to the bot
tom of the South Atlantic on
the liner Zam Zam last April.
Doctor Barnett, whose home
while a student was in Colum
bia, was graduated from Caro
lina in 1933 with a Magna Cum
Laude citation. His diploma,
aiong with ail his oihte po6cs
sions, was lost when the Zam
Zam was sunk by a German
raider.

Literary Society last Tuesday night,
as argument flared as to the consti
tutionality of a resolution passed at
the last meeting declaring all those
not present at that meeting no longer
members.

Paul Sansbury, another injured party
by the act, took issue with Morris
Mazursky and the debate rose into a
high pitch.

ing on the constitutionality, and
voices rose clear and loud on each
side. A momentary armistice caused
by Jimmie Hill's motion to reconsid
er the resolution crashed into debate
as Sanisbury leaped to the floor to
maintain that the motion could not be
reconsidered as its constitutionality
was under fire.

Cause For Week's Delay
Production difficulties caused the
postponement of the three one act
plays scheduled for presentation at
Drayton Hall last Tuesday by the
University Players.
Prof. M. G. Christophersen, direc
tor of the Players, explained the de
lay and stated that the plays would
definitely be presented Tuesday,
March 24.
"First one-actor on the program,
is Stephen Leacock's comedy about a
couple of swindlers who fleece a gul
lible old gentleman with fake psychic
phenomena. Lester Pilcher, Arthur
Wilder, Bill Donney and Laura Lee
Green are cast in the play. Professor
Christophersen will direct.
"Sleeping Dogs", another comedy
directed by Laura Lee Green, con
cerns the misfortunes of a happily
married woman who lets a trivial re
mark,by a friend lead her into a
violent quarrel with her husband. The
cast includes Alice Glominki, Jose
phine Zula, Carol Iumbert, Ray
Joyner and Bill Bray .
