Gamecocks Gamecock Gaff By DON MERRICK STATE CHAMPS AGAIN Since this sheet went to press last time, our high flying Garne and Black quintet has come through with its second successive statq basketball championship in as many years. The Birds clinched the titl last Saturday night in Charleston, when they eked out an extra-perio< thriller from The Citadel, 54-52. With the score tied at 52-all in th( overtime period, Stan Stasica, Carolina's high-scoring guard, hit th< basket for the winning two points. Carolina's basketeers finished the state race with eight victories and suffered their only defeat at the hands of the Fur man Purple Hurricanes earlier in the season, on the Hurricanes' box-like court. The Gamecocks trailed the College of Charleston most of th4 season until last week, when the low country school dropped three -i a row, to assure the Birds of the title. Presbyterian won one more gam< than the Gamecocks, but lost two, to put them in the runner-up positiot in the loop standings. In winning the state crown, the Birds also assured them selves of a berth in the Southern Conference tournament at Raleigh March 5-7. If our basketeers were to lose their remain ing three games, they would still land in the playoff. In his first year as head basketball mentor last year, Coach Johnson lead the darkhorse Carolina team into the finals, only to be tripped up by a powerful Duke five. This year again, the Game cocks are the dark horses, and this corner for one hopes they will upset the proverbial apple cart. PRES AND STAN We're not going to take back what we said about teamwork play ing the biggest part in the Birds' court success this year, but we'd like t< say a little bit about the Gamecock's one-two punch on the basketbal court. Both Pres \Vestmoreland and Stan Stasica have played a majoi role this year in keeping the Bird cagers up at the top in the state am confereAce races. Pres, who is a senior and playing his last season for the Garnet and Black cagers, has hit the basket for 206 points in 17 games to give him a 12.1 average a game, which isn't bad shooting at all. Wes is leading the state race for individual scor ing honors and should cop that crown for his second straight season. Pres had his best season last year, when he scored 371 points in 24 games, and was second only to North Carolina's towering center, George Glainauk, ;i coinerence scoring. Coach Johnson will sorely miss Westmoreland when next year rolls around. Carolina's All-State and All-Southern back, Stan Stasica, takin up where lie left off on the gridiron last fall, worked himself th< Gamecock's fast breaking basketball system, and has been playing plenty of basketball for the Birds this year. lis basket Saturday nigh at Charleston gave the 11irds the state championship. TOUGH '42 GRID SCHEDULE While the spring footballers mark time in their fourth week of practice, Head Coach Rex Enright announces that Carolina's '42 football schedule has just been completed. With out a breather in the whole lot-which is more than some South Carolina teams can say-the Bird gridmen face three newcom ers on their new grid menu in Tennessee, Alabama and West Virginia. Two of these teams, namely the Vols and the Tide, always rank near the top in the Southeastern conference and in the nation. The Carolina mentor has added these three teams to replace Georgia-remember that, or rather should I say will you ever forget it?-Kansas 'State, and Penn State. Little can be said about the Gamecock chancees at this stage o the game, for so many of Carolina's veterans arc subject to the draft. Carolina's stadium will be the site of only two home games next year, the opener with Tennessee and the annual State Fair Classic with Clemson. However, the Birds play three S games within a hundred miles of Columbia, and one game at Chapel Hill, so if you have any tires left by that time you can follow the Carolina team. -The schedule: September 26-Tennessee at Columbia. October 3-North Carolina at Chapel Hill. October 10-West Virginia at Morgantown, W. Va. October 22-Clemson at Columbia. October 30-The Citadel at Orangeburg. November 7-Alabama at Birmingham. November 14-Furman at Greenville. November 20-Miami at Miami. November 26-Wake Forrest at Charlotte. If the Southern conference rules freshmen eligible for varsit' football this coming fall, Enright will hiave' three freshmen southpaw: to toss against Clemson anid company. Cantore, Paschal and Herlonj are the three backfield hopefuls. TRACKSTERS TO CHAPEL HILL Carolina's cinder pounders will take to the hardwood floor tomorrow afternoon, when they begin the '42 track season at the Southern conference indoor meet at Chapel Hill. Coach J. T. Penney, the Bird's new track head, is taking only six varsity men with him to the meet. Penney is entering "Scooter" Rucks, a newvcomer to the team ii the 60-yard dlash, wvhile veteran Tommy Attaway will take over th< 70-yard low hurdles. McIver Riley, the Bird's veteran dash man, wil try his hand at the quarter mile. In the weight liftinig events Carolim: will toss Clem Nowak and Joe Krivonak against the field. Riley, Blouin Rucks and Attaway are the cinder pounders in the relay event. Captair Harvey Blouin will run in the half mile. The Bird cinder men have been working%out in the Field House and have not had any regular outdoor pr'actice yet. After the warm up meet at Chapel Hill, the Bird trackmen will start 'their outdoor workouts in preparation for their first regularly scheduled meet wtih Furman on March 28. STATE MEET AT NATATORIUM, . Carolina's water splashing team will play host to the state meel Tuesday afternoon at the University natatorium. Carolina and Clemsor will be the only teams to enter full squads this year, while P. C., WVofford and The Citadel will send individual entries to the meet. End C '42 Foot Biggest Boom Since Tompkins In Basketball Ticket Sales Skyrocket To Highest Number Of Paying Fans Since '32 "Carolina had the biggest basket I ball boom this year since the days of the Texas Tompkins brothers," said Whitey Rawl in describing at tendance at University of South Carolina home games during the current season. "You cani't lose anything by tak ing a little exercise and that is really all that trying out is," explained the scientist coach. The ninth and final opponent, West Virginia, was signed and scaled last week, Head Coach and Athletic Director Rex Enright announced recently. The schedule, which looks like Frankenstein on paper, also includes Alabama, Tennessee and North Car olina. Numbering exactly half of last year's, the home games for '42 will be only two: Clemson and Tennes see. The Gamecocks will visit North Carolina at Chapel Hill, West Vir ginia at Morgantown, X. Va., Ala bama at Birmingham, Furman at Greenville and Miami at Miami. Two games will be played on neutral ground. Carolina will meet The Citadel at the Orangeburg fair and Wake Forest in Charlotte on Thanksgiving Day. Newcomers to USC's schedule are Tennessee, West Virginia and Ala bama. This trio replaced Georgia, Penn State and Kansas State. Opinions conflict as to how Caro lina will compare with thelse new opponents but opinions also tend to indicate that the Carolina-Alabama - game will be a whopper: both teamsi employ the Notre Dame system.
