'BULL' with . 'BULL 0 0 by LEONARD TURNBULL Be At Home High Schoolers Over one thousand four hundred high school boys and girls are gracing the flowery campus of Carolina this week. 'Bull extends to all a cordial welcome and reminds them that Caro lina is a fine place-what about bringing your duds here and staying for around four years? Tennis matches and track engagements will hold the focal point of interest on the sporting side of the annual event. The girls started their eliminations Wednesday evening on the Dreher High School Courts to decide the tennis championess, 'er sunuthin.' The boys competed for their crown out at the Ridgewood Forest Hills courts and the University varsity courts. This evening will find the high schoolers fighting it out for the tennis crowns on the varsity clay in the finals of the matches. Today on Melton Field the Class A boys will battle it out for the track championshilp in that division. The B and C divi sions fought their events yesterday. Block "C" Training Table The Carolina Block "C" club has really advocated a grand thing. They are working out the problem of a training table among themselves. This year the Block "C" officers asked the administration to let them have the use of a single room in one of the dormitories to turn into a Block "C" meeting room. Due to the present crowded conditions among the tenements the proposal was turned down. The goal of the clubbers is to lease a house off the campus to turn into a Block "C" club room. Included with the club room would be a training table for the athletes of all the major sports. Included in this plan would be all the athletes partici pating in the major sports of football, basketball, boxing track and baseball. If the plan for the training table does not go through the clubbers still have high hopes of getting a tenement on the campus to hold their meetings in. Joe Patrone and "Hedge" Arrowsmith are the major workers behind the. plan for the club, and 'Bull goes on dock to wish them all kinds of success in their work. Track Team Hits Clinton Tourney Two state-wide tournaments face the Birds this week in athletics. The track team journeys over to Presbyterian Col lege at Clinton for tie annual State Track Meet, while the golf team remains at home to participate in golf eliminations out at the Forest Lake Country Club. The State Track Meet at Clinton this week-end will find the Birds in the slot of numiber two ranked teams. The hu1rdling and high stepping Tigers from Clemson College are again the favorite to cop the events for about the third year in succession. Last year the Birds were rated second to the Tigers with a slim chance to win out. This year it is the same story. Last Year Bonnie Banks MacFadden was the chief cause of the downfall of the Gamecocks. and Bonnie Banks is not back this year. The past week-end up at Tigerland the Clemson cinder men downed the Birds decisively, blt our track team vow it will be a different story today and tomorrow. The prelmninary varsity and freshmen events will be run off this evening with the finals of the varsity men set for tomorrowv on the Clinton track. Jolting Joe Swats And Twirls Jolting ,Joe (Grugan has proved himsel f to be a rare combina tion of a grandl pitchmer who tightens down in tihe clutches, and a batter with an average of over to the .400 p)ace. Your sp)orts edlitor was not aware of this fact until this week when the news came out that Carolina had entered a four man team in the annual intercol legiate golf tournament. It seems that four golfers of Caro lina, mecludting laust yearm's veterans, worked ouit a team for the tournament, but will not schedule any regular dluals. The eliminations will get under way this evening at the Forest Lake Country Club. At the present time The Citadel golf team has two legs on the cup offered by the Columbia Junior Chamber of Commerce to the wim ing team. The cadets are favored to retire the cup this year. The Fillingim, utility infielder, Carlyle Hymson, veteran second baseman; Intramural Softball Tournament Swings Into Action Monday Thirteen Teams Entered In Competition; Some Of Games Played At Night Vith thirteen team entries, the University softball intramural tour nament will swing into the first lap Monday. Softball is starting slightly late this year but Mr. Jack Crawford, director of physical ed ucation, stated yesterday tiat he did not think it wonld retard its Success. The swimming intramurals were held last Wednesday afternoon. Intramurals for track will begin Monday and will finish up Wed nesday and Friday. Wrestling will be held next Friday. The softball team entries are Pi K A, Sigma Chi, Phi S K, K A, A T 0, Sigma Nu, K S, Compass and Chart Society, 24 1-2, 25 1st floor Preston, 2nd floor Preston (E), and the 3rd floor Preston. Games so far have only been scheduled for Monday and Wednes lay. On Davis Field at 4:30 Mon (lay, Pi K A will meet Sigma Chi and at 5:30, 24 1-2 will tangle with 2nd floor Preston (E). Simul taneously on Melton Field at 4:30, there will be 'P S K versus 25 and at 5:30, 1st floor Preston versus K A. The games on WVednesday are: Davis Field; 4:30, Sigma Nulersus K 5; 5:30, Sigma Clhi versus P S K. Melton Field, 4:30, A T 0 versus K A; 5:30, K S versus Pi K A. Later on there' wvill be night games played on Davis Field. Games will continue to be played until a few days before examina tions begin. Wrestling intramiurals will be held at 4:00 on Friday, May 9 in the gymnasium. Track intramurals will be held Monday, Wednesday, antd Friday, May 5, 7, 9. Competition will be open for individuals as well as teamis. On Monday at 5:00, the 100 yardl dash, half mile, high jump, and the shot put will be held. On \Vednesday, at 5:00, the 220 yardl dash, discus, broad jumip and the 440 yard dash will be held. The low hurdles, the high hurdles, the javelin and the miles will be run off Friday at 5:00. Anyway the Carolina Block "C" club plans to exhibit their heel to toe routine soon in a series of follies to be put on at Drayton Hall on May 12, 13 and 14. 14. Skits and dances will be the theme .as .the .gridders .and other athletes show the audi ence something entirely differ ent from the sporting side of their careers. Louis Sossamon is the chair man of the committee working out the affair. On the com mittee are Dick Anderson, "Bobo" Carter and Junie Hym son. Leo Kroto is chairman of the advertising committee. Fred Lytle, Bob Brown, "Dutch" Elston, Gus Hempley and Bill Applegate compose the com mittee. The follies will be put on in connection with a play put on by the University Players, and the skits and dances will oc cupy the intermission times. Intra-Track Begins Monday, May 5th Under the direction of physical education headl, J. A. Crawvford, the University of South Carolina intra-mural track and field pro gram wvill get underway May 5th Tenements and franternities may enter teams or indlividluals may run. The events wvill be run off as follows: Monday, May 5 at 5 o'clock: 100 yardl dash, half mile highi jump andl shot putt. Second Floor East Of Preston Wins Basketball Tourney Sigma Chi Is Nosed Out By 40 To 36; Game Was Tied Until Lost Minute In a free scoring game the second floor cast wing of 'Preston de feated Sigma Chi 40 to 36 to take the annual intra-mural basketball championship for 1941. both teams were necke and neck until the last minute of play when the Preston boys sank two field goals to gain a four point victory. The teams had previously out pointed all the opposition in pre tournament games. Sigma Clii was the pre-tournament favorite until they went down beneath a barrage of goals by the Waldorf shooters. The basketball tournament closed out the winter intra-murals jousts in all the suorts. J. A. Crawford, head of the physical education de partment termed the winter intra murals as the best in a number of years. Honors for top scoring honors for the game rested with Jim Howey of the winning Preston team. Howey sank 18 points. Team mate Marion Harrison was run ner-up with 10 points. High scorer for the looosing Sigma Chi team was "Jeep" Rogers with nine points. The game was nip and tuck all the way. The lead changed several times (luring the game. The winning Preston Teanm reached the finals by eliminating the Phi Beta Delta farternity in the semi-finals and a teami representing the ROTC unit in the opening round. SigmaChii licked S. A. Turner, Christenburg Advance in Hi Tennis Ben Turner, seeded nunmber one, and Christenburg, seetded number two, adlvancedl to the semii-finals of the annual high school tennis jousts yesterday afternoon. TIurner hails fronm Dreher H-i, andi was the winner in last years tourney. Christenburg is from S1partanh)urg and was (defeated by Turnier in the finals of the matches last year. His 78 yard jaunt with a West Vir ginia punt at Orangeburg in '39, saved the day for the Birds and was a highlight of the year. Netters Win Fifth Victory Over Emory-Henry Teant Gamecocks Make Trip To Greenville Today; Engage Hurticane On Courts Carolina's net team, lead by Cap tain Stan Brose defeated Emory and Henry 7-2 Saturday afternoon on the University courts. It was the Gamecocks fifth victory of the sea soil. The Birds travel to Greenville to play the Furnian Purple Hurricane today. The season will be closed against the Clemson Tigers on May 6. Last Saturday the Tigers whipped the Garnet and Black forces of Coach DuPree 84-47. The Gamecocks are weak in re serve strength, while Clemson will have the most complete team, with men four deep in every spot. MacIver Riley, Bird speedster, currently ranks as the fastest man in the state in the dashes. Two weeks ago Riley ran the 100 yards in 9.8 seconds to set a new record at the Citadel track. Against Clemson last week, Riley won both the 100 and the 220 yard dashes. Riley is undefeated in the state in both the 100 and 220 dashes. In the half-mile, Harvey Blouin will be the Gamecocks best bet. Blouin was unable to run last year because of a knee injury. Blouin has placed in every event he has run in this year, and has been one of the most dependable cindermen on the squad. Clemson's ace pole vaulter, Fennell, will attempt to break the pole vault record set years ago by Ross O'Dell of Clemson. Coach PuPree is banking on Joe Krivonak and Joe Hatkevich to come through in the disc'us and shot put. George Chamis, wvho broke the freshman high jump record at Clinton last xcar, wvill be aiming at the varsity mark this year for Carolina. * Coach Lonnie McMillan of P.
