Birds Gamecocks To Jour. To Meet Powerful Ti Both Squads Are Unde In The State; 'Birds Lac Tomorrow afternoon at Clemson of South Carolina track squad wil team to wind up dual competition fi State Track Meet to be held at Clit undefeated in the state so far. Clemson pasted a crushin'g defeal cindermen last Saturday, 85-51. Th a victory over The Citadel, 71-56. Riley Breaks Record 4 * Maclver Riley, Carolina sopho more, broke the record for the 100 yard dash on the Citadel track last Saturdpy. Riley coasted over the 100 yal'Us in 9.8 seconds. The pre vious record was made by one of Carolina's greatest track men, Dick Little, two years ago, when 'he ran the same race in 9.9 seconds. Riley added the 220 yard dash to his 100 yard win. He will be a favorite to cop these events up at Clemson. "Spec" Evatt came t6rough with the "iron man" stunt again Satur day, when he won both the mile and two mile races for the Birds. Blouin Wins 680 Harvey Blouin, fresh from his 880 yard victory will battle Dickerson of Clemson in this event. The Tigers have men three deep in the 440 yard sprint; Graham, Cargill and Lachi cotte. Walter Carnes, undefeated this year for Carolina, will try to keep his record intact. Blouin will run with Carnes in this event. The Bird squad has suffered from a lack of men all season and in order to make a good showing against the Tigers they will have to win a majority of the first place poitions. Both teams are on the Furman Purple Hurricane Gamecock squad came through to Ifntra-Basketball Finals Tonight Phi B D And Sigma Chi Win In Semi-Finals The intra-mural basketball finals tonight will find the Sigma Chi team playing the Second Floor, East Wing of Preston. The game will be held at 8 o'clock in the Field House. Last Wednesday night the Sigma Chi's defeated the Second Floor West Wing of Preston 44-13. Sig ma Chi lead at the end of the first half 21-2. Brogdon. was high scorer with twelve points. Castles was runner-up with ii points .Both play for Sigma Chi. Today the bat swing ers and the fly chasers will journey up to the lair of the Tigers of Bengal Town. For around two and a half hours this even ing balls will be flying fast and horsehides will get a terrific beating as the Gamecocks attempt to down their ancient foe on the diamond. Tomorrow the track team will repeat the in vasion of the Clemson Tigers hangout, and will match legs and arms with the thin clads of the Country Gentlemen. The baseball aces headed for the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains this morning, somewhere around Clemson. The Clemson nine has created the habit of getting at least 14 bingles in each dual. Against Erskine Saturday they plastered out 14 hits, good for 10 rums, in downing the Seceeders 10-2. Against the Wofford Terriers Tuesday the Tigers made an encore ap pearance and banged out 14 hits and scored 10 runs for a 10-1 victory. BUCHANAN LEADS TIGERS Buchanan for the Tigers is playing copycat to Joe Grugan of the Birds. Buchanan is the ace moundsman for the Jungaleers and is also a top hitter for the Clemson nine. He will probably get the nod tomorrow to test his left hand slants against the wood of the Gamecocks sluggers. Last Saturday against Ers kine lie let the Flying Fleet down with four scattered hits and two -runs, plus his feat at the bat of getting a double with two men on base and pushing in two runs. . It will probably be southpaw against southpaw tomorrow on the mound. Leonard Kanian, ace left hander of the Bird crew, will get the nod from Petoskey to set the Tigers back on their haunches. Last Saturday against Company B of the One Hundred and Seventeenth Infantry Kanian fanned fourteen of the doughboys and gave up only one bingle to shut out the sol diers 4-0 in an exhibition game. GRUGAN STARS FOR BIRDS Joe Grugan journeys to the outfield tomorrow instead of the mound, and will put his big stick policy into play against the Tigers at the plate. Last Tuesday's victory over P. C. was Joe's fifth straight triumph on the mound. The only loss of the year was dealt to Joe in the opening game of the season against Michigan State. Since this lone defeat Grugan has whizzed the ball by the opposition and has never handed out more than six hits in one game. Against Erskine in his second appearance of the year Joe only. gave up four bingles. Newberry only salvaged three hits out of his offerings. Pittsburgh slugged to the limit and gar nered six hits. Davidson and P. C. also gathered six hits. Plus his extra-deluxe mound performances Joe is the clean up man in the Birds batting order. To date Grugan has the rest of the Gamecocks trailing him in the hitting averages. He is currently swatting the horsehide for a .361 average. RHODEN FIGHTING SLUMP Graham Rhoden is the current problem of Coach Ted Pe toskey. Last year behind the plate Graham was the ace of the team. His catching was good enough to replace veteran Joe Patrone. His work with the willow was without parallel for the rest of the Gamecock nine. He ended the season with an average of approximately .380, and boy that's slugging. Every body has a slump, however, and Rhoden should snap back into form soon. Abiy filling the blank slot behind the plate is Bruce Tate. Tate as a sophomore sensation in the true sense of the word. He is a pressure hitter and is currently boasting of an average, or .22 plls excellent work behind the plate. TRACK TEAMS EVENLY MATCHED After their victory over The Citaael-s track te-umn the Birds are pointing for the tussle with the Tigers tomorrow. Agamnst the Bulldogs the Gamnecocks pulled 10 first places out of the 14 events run off. The cinder aces of the Birds and the Tigers will be evenly matched, if p)revious duals mean anything. Furman fell vic tim to both Carolina and Clemson by virtually the same scores. The Tigers appear strongest in the distance runs and the hur dle races. "Spec" Evatt will probably run into plenty of trou ble up in Tiger town in th,e mile and two mile runs. "Spec" participates in both these events on the same evening. Clem ,Mon has different men for the runs. School Week Tennis Matches And Track And Field Events Will Be Sport Contests Next week the University of South Carolina will again play host to the annual South Carolina High School Week. Tennis matches and track and field events will be run off on the sporting side of the an nual clash wits and athletic ability. Girls and boys will participate in the tennis matches. Tennis draw ings for the boys will be held at 11 o'clock next Wednesday morning. The drawings will be posted at Uni versity High School. The girl's drawings will be held at 12 noon. The pairings will be posted at Flinn Hall. At 2:30 on Wednesday the girls will swing into action on the Caro lina varsity courts, for the prelimi naries. The preliminaries for the boys will be held at the Ridgewood Club and Forest Lake Club tennis courts. The tennis finals for the girls and the boys will be held at a time and a place to be determined. At 9:00 a. m. track coaches of Classes B and C schools will meet in the University Field House to get track information and numbers. Thursday morning at 10:00 a. m. the track preliminaries will get un der way in the B and C classes oo Melton Field. Jack Crawford of the University Physical Education department and J. H. Celemen will be in charge. The track finals for the B and C classes will be run off at 3:00 Thursday evening on Melton Field. Class A track events will be run off next Friday on Nielton Field. Netters Meet Furman Today Emory And Henry Will Be Visitors Tomorrow Swinging back into action on the home courts the Gamecock tennis ters will meet the racquet swingers from Furman University this even ing at 2:00 p. in. The Birds will also play host tomorrow afternoon to the Emory and Henry team. Outstanding the past week on the Gamecocks net team was number one man, Captain Stanly Brose. Brose bowled over Bob Kerdasher of P. C. in an ov'ertime struggle 1-6, 7-5, 7-5. P. C. wo 6-1. The Citadel netters were visitors the next day and the Gamecocks again bowled, 5-1. The matches wvere much closer than the score in dicated and darkness forced the calling off of the final doubles match. Oscar Miims was the only v'ictor for the Gamecocks, in the number 5 position. Will Be Followed By- Instructors Course Life saving in all the elementary forms will be taught in the Univer sity Natatorium beginning Monday, April 28, at 7:30 p. in. Rod Turn bull will be the instructor, and all candidates are urged to get in touch with Mr. Turnbull before Satur day, April 26. The course will cover all the forms of swimming, floating, diving and different approaches to drown ing persons. The participants will also learn the use of the land equip ment in saving lives. All persons interested in the course are urged to get in touch with Mr. Turnbull in the Commerce Fraternity Building. Around twelve applicants are registered for the course, but many more are expected before the course starts Monday. The principles of "Row, Throw and Go" will be explained and put into practical use. Personal safety methods will also be taught. Anyone is eligible for the course who is an experience swimmer and is over 17 years old. Immediately following the Senior Life Saving course Chuck Mix, field represen tative of the Red Cross, will come to the pool to give instruction lead ing to the Instructor's certificate. Buchanan is the shining star for the Tigers this season. His work with the mace is also powerful. When not on the mound Buchanan holds down the first base position and prides himself in extra base blows. For the Birds Leonard Kanian will get the starting nod from Coach Ted Petoskey. Last Saturday his wrong side slants were too much for the Co. B, 118th Infantry team, and he set the soldiers down with one lone bingle. Kanian's control was also in top shape against the 118th Infantry, as he walked only one man and fanned 14. Crawford, Grugan In Reserve Held in reserve for Leonard Kanian will be Gus Crawford and Joe Grugan. Gus Crawford may get the nod from Coach Ted Petoskey before the game starts. Joe Grugan will hold down one of the outfield positions if he does' not twirl for the Birds. Grugan has an average of .361 at the plate this season. Against Presbyterian College last Tuesday the pitching of Grugan and the hitting of the Birds coupled with 11 Blue Stocking errors sent the P. C. nine to Clinton with a 12-3 loss pasted on their flannels. Every player on the Gamecock roster garnered hits. Hymson, De Mario and Leitner gathered two apiece.
