In Honor Group
Eight initiates of Blue Key honor
ary leadership fraternity will be
honored with a banquet and card
dance in the Rathskeller of the
Hotel Jefferson next Wednesday
night.
Mac Singletary, retiring president
of the organization, will serve as
toastmaster for the occasion.
Colonel Sumner Waite, until last
August military attache to France,
will be the principal speaker at the
banquet. After his address, the
new officers will be introduced, in
cluding the new president, Olin Mc
Donald.
Immediately following the ban
quet, new members and old will
dance to the music of George Olsen
and his "Columbians."

Office Are Listed
Pictorial Bulletin To
All Old Grads Is One
Of The Principal Aims
That the new pictorial bulletin of
Carolina will go out to every Caro
lina graduate who can be contacted
is the present principal objective of
the Alumni office. Those whose
addresses are known have been for
warded copies and sent letters ad
vising that these bulletins were on
the way.
Those whose whereabouts are
not known are being checked up on
through friends or relatives, while
those whose addresses the associa
tion has but is not certain of their
correctness have been sent letters
only to determine whether the
recorded address is the right one.
If so bulletins will be forwarded
later.
Letters have been sent to all the
district vice-presidents of the Alum
ni Association urging each to begin
planning for the meeting in his sec
tion to precede the Alumni Day at
Carolina in June and assuring all
that the Alumni office would give
full cooperation.
The Alumni office has been try
ing to get in touch with the mem
bers of the class of '40 to invite
them 'fo make a special effort to
attend the Alumni Day. Responses
which have come in all indicate an
interest in the program and a desire
to attend if possible. Unforeseen
circumstances may prevent a num
ber of them from coming since a
good percent of the class is in the
service.

"There's'an inkwell on the desk,'
observed Bill Simpson.
"So I see," remarked Mr. Lewis,
"and what's so strange about that?"
"Well, it wasn't there Saturday."
With these words the inkwell be
came the center of interest for a
while at least. The workers in the
alumni office looked at each other
in amazement. Come to think of it,
none of them had ever even seen
the inkwell before.
So they sat down to reason out
this dilemma. When the office was
closed on Saturday there was no
inkwell-no possible way for any
one to get in the office over the
weekend-therefore, there should not
be an inkwell here. The staff
smiled contentedly-it was only an
hallucination.
But there it was, inescapable, with
its cut glass base and chased silver
cap. No, it was real enough. The
office workers sat and glared at the
intruder. Had the intruder been
able, no doubt it would have glared
back.
No one ever turned up to claim it
nor did they discover any trace of

Committee Bans Socials
One Week Before Exams
The Carolina faculty committee
on frat4rnities and student organiza
tions decided this week that no so
cial functions may be held one week
before or during examination pe
riods, W. Frank Taylor, Jr., assist
ant business manager, announced
yesterday.
This rule will ,be in effect from
May 15 through May 28.
Five New Members
Are Initiated Into
Cavaliers Club
Jack Reese, Lord Cavalier of the
recently installed Cavaliers club
stated today that the club was mak
ing much progress.
Besides the charter members,
Carl Atkins, Bob Morgan, Abe
Grossman, Harold Glenn and Pit
kin Bell, five new members have
been initiated: Adele Moses, Betty
Ross, Lil Bollin, Marjorie Jones,
and Pitkin Bell.
Plans are underway for the pur
chase of pens similar in design to
the insignia used by the old Cava
liers club, founded at Carolina many
years ago.

For Second Place
Sigma Alpha Epsilon won the
fraternity loving cup and the Fred
Waring loving cup at the song fest
spolsored by Alpha Kappa Gamma,
national leadership sorority, in the
University of South Carolina chapel
Tuesday night. Delta Delta Delta
sorority won the sorority loving
cup.
The song fest is an annual affair
sponsored by the honorary sorority
to raise money for the Central
Scholarship fund.
Second place in the fraternity
group was won by Pi Kappa Alpha
fraternity, and Alpha Delta Pi was
runner-up among the sororities.
The cup given by Fred Waring
was for the best arrangement of
"The Gamecocks of South Carolina
U," a pep song written especially
for Carolina by Waring.
Other fraternities and sororities
participating in the fest were Kappa
Delta, Pi Beta Phi, and Delta Zeta
sororities and Sigma Chi, and Sig
ma Nu fraternities.
Maude Byrnes Chisholm, presi
dent of the Co-ed Association and a
member of Alpha Kappa Gamma,
was mistress of ceremonies.

Is Subject For Writers
The committee for the Bates
Medal award announces that it is
ready to receive any essays sub
mitted by students of the Univer
sity on the subject "The American
Tradition."
To qualify, students must submit
a manuscript of between 1,500 and
2,500 words, typewritten, doubled
spaced on or before May 15, 1941.
The award will be made on the
basis of clearness of thought, and
organization; originality, and ef
fectiveness of expression.
The committee reserves the right
to reject all manuscripts and not
award the medal should they con
sider all of the essays undeserving,

J. E. Norwood of the committee
announced.
