The Senate yesterday voted to raise resident tuition of State supported institutions to ,70.00
a year; an increase of $10.00, and to place non-resident tuition on a reciprocal basis, not to he
less than $200.00 a year. The upper house also voted a $36,000.00 elut in Carolina's appropria
tion, giving the university $286,117.00.
The appropriation cut and the non-resident tuition raise were uncontested, but the reident fee
raise brought l) heated discussion.
The Senate finance committee recommended that resident tuition be $80.00 a year. An
amendment by Senator Laney of Chesterfield placing the fee at $70.0() passe(l.
A second amendment by Senator Long of Laturens fixing resident tuition at *-60.00 (the
lresent figure) was tabled. Senator Jefferies of Colleton, chairman of the linance conmittee.

In pleading for low tuition rates for South Carolina students, Senator Long <declared that
graduates of this State's schools are recognized for their traininig. IIe cited especially the
Citadel, his alma mater, and Clemson.
Senator Long declared that lie is "against raising the tuition fees of any State institutiois
one iota."
"Let's don't make it any harder for South Carolina boys and girls to get in vollege." he
pleaded.
The Laurens senator pointed out that when lie was at the Citadel, lie went oI a state -chooar
ship.
"That scholarship has been abolished, and costs have been raised, lie shouted. "You say that
times are different, but we still have to educate ourt boys and girls."
Senator Sawyer of Georgetown then rose an<d spoke in belialf of State liqu1or stores as a way
out of South Carolina's financial <ifficulties.
