Tough competition faced the
season for the various positions I
up quickly now. Some doubt i
the outfield.
Ken Roskie is resting securely at
first base. Ken was out most of last
week with a broken rib but he is
now back in uniform.
Junie Hymson looks good on sec
ond base but he is being crowded
somewhat by Calhoun "Sonny" Ay
cock.
Carlyle Holliday has shortstop
"sewed up." Carlyle received much
praise from the local papers early in
practice and from all appearances,
that praise is not groundless.
Van Earl Fillingim looks like the
right man to hold down the "hot
corner." He has been showing up
well in the practices and no one is
in sight to contest his position.
There are a number of outfielders
who are working hard for positions.
They are Truman Hoxit, Earl Dun
ham, John Leitner, Angelo De
Mario, Herbert Coman, William
Outlaw, and Daily Harris.
The same pitching staff is getting
their arms in shape day after day.
They are Joe Grugan, Waldo Hy
man, Marcus Stark, Ray Player,
Leonard Kanian, and George Craw
ford. Three excellent catchers are
to be found in Graham Rhoden, Joe
Patrone, and Bruce Tate.
From early prospects, the fielding
of the Birds will be about the best
in the state. The hitting was poor
early in the practice season but has
greatly improved to date and justi
fies, the description of "good."
Summer Bulletin
Will Appear Soon

summer school bulletins will be ready

Rounding out the first week of
practice, the University of South

its initial match against Furman on
March 29th.
"Practice is being held at 3 o'clock
every day on Melton field, and with
our dire need of material, anyone
with any potentialities at all will be
welcome," Coach Dupre said. "At
present, I have no key men around
which I can build a good team," he
added.
Spring football practice has re
leased several potential candidates.
The schedule calls for ofur dual
meets; Furman, Citadel, P. C. and
Clemson. The state meet will be
held at Clinton again this year May
1st and 2nd.
Coach Dupre is going to enter
several men in the Southern Con
ference meet May 18.
The loss of captain Dick Little in
the dashes and broad jump, is go
ing to be a hard spot to fill.
McIver Riley and Tommy Atta
way will try to fill Dick's shoes in
the dashes. Thus far no man has re
ported who can broad jump.
Another sore spot in the team is
the pole vault. T. H. Davis, who got
to the finals of the state meet last
year, was lost by graduation. Dick
Anderson, who is participating in
the 120 high hurdles and the.javelin,
will try to fill the gap.
The Birds will line up in the fol

This will be the third fencing en

Carolina Will Have No
Solf Team This Year
Dr. Havilah Babcock announced
last night that there would be no
golf team this year.
Due to lack of interest and as a
result, practically no applicants, it
will be fruitless to try to organize
a golf team for intercollegiate com
petition.
Most of the veterans which con
posed last year's team did not returti
to school this year as a result of
graduation and various other rea
sons.
About the most outstanding
golfer which would otherwise be
eligible for the team is Jane Cruni
who has been burning up the greens
all over the south. Even she would
be ineligible to participate on tht
golf team because it comnpetes
against teams made up of men and
a new ruling has overruled that..

Powder Puff Brigade
Can't Participate With
Boys In Any Sport
Reprinted from The State
Carolina's "major sport" teams
have been made safe from inroads
of the glamour gals who have a flair
for athletics.
Already the golf, tennis and swim
ming teams had suffered from the
invasion of the powder puff brigade
--welcome invasion, we hasten to
add-and there was some talk that,
unless the boys looked to their
laurels, that further invasions were
imminent.
In fact, the glamour gals played
themselves a bootball game last fall
and a couple weeks ago came out
with a full fledged fencing team
which defeated the University of
North Carolina feminine foil fling
ers.
But, alas and alack, them days are
gone forever.
From now on the girls may par
ticipate in athletics-hut they can't
participate with or against the boys.
This was decided at a meeting of the
special committee on athletics of
the university at a recent meeting.
The committee ruled that "Effective
this date, February 26, 1941, and
thereafter, women students will not
he permitted to participate, engage
in, or represent the University of
South Carolina in any athletic event
in which men students predominate;
this action having specific reference
both to inter-collegiate and intra
collegiate contests."
The special committee is com
posed of Dr. J. Rion McKissick,
president of the University; John A.
Chase, Jr., registrar and Rex En
