'BULL' wit 'BULL by LEONARD TURNBULL * Gridders End'Spring Sessions Tomorrow the gridiron aces of Coach Rex Enright will put the finishing touches on the annual spring practice sessions. The team looks plenty good in the eyes of observers. Coach Enright is still gloomy, though, and appears worried about the prospects of the liiemen. The backfield will be tops if all the ball toters keep on toting the pigskin instead of a gun. With Grygo and Stasica there Enriglit will have enough scoring punch. With fellows like Dunham and Elston to block for the triple threaters, plenty of holes should be found to trot througb. With line smashers like Ken Roskie and Bill Millner at the fullback post the opposition couldn't set themselves for the seat backs. Say what are you worrying about, Enright? The line is the sore spot in the hopes of the coaches for trie '41 season. Nearly all the star linemen seem to have injuries that are liable to knock them out of regular duty at any time. The guards are the main worry. Joe Krivonak seems to be out of the rough work for the rest of the spring sessions because of a pair of trick knees. Wilson Johnson, star freshman lineman, is troubled with an ankle that continues to get tivisted. Ernie Bauer, another freshman, has never quite recovered from the blow given his knee during the Furman frosh game the past fall. Bruce Plyler, bohunk, received a shoulder injury during spring sessions that may cop up again next fall. Coupled with graduation of three regular guards this leaves few to carry the burden. The other positions of the gridders posts seem to be well taken care of. What with Louis Sossamon, "Bobo" Carter, Ja'ck Keenan, John Leitner, and others, the rest of the line will be O. K. * Baseballers Shaping Up On Melton Spring is definitely here and so are the sports which take place during the balmy season. Out on Melton Field the base ball chatter is resounding. Prospects for the teams chances appear dafk to some, and bright to others. I think we are going to have an A number one outfit. The infield will be strong at all points; with the first base slot appearing doubtful. At third base Van Earl Fillinghain will probably roam, with Angelo DeMario giving plenty of competition. Van Earl is fast and can really cover the ground around the "hot corner." DeMarrio looked fast enough last year with the frosh team but never managed to shake out the football kinks. Carlyle Holiday in pre-season warm-ups, looks like the major candidate for the short-stop position around the keystone sack. Veteran Junie lymson and Sunny Aycock are having a battle royal for the second base honors. Junies' past performances have deemed him as a fielder on any college team, here or there. Plenty fast, lie is troubled only at the plate when the opposing pitchers start shooting the apple at him. Sunny can't be counted out of the picture, not by a long shot. A good man at the bat, Sunny may pass Ibis first varsity year as a relief man and a. pinch hitter. First base will find Ken Roskie roaming around. Ken looks like the class of the competition so far during the warm-ups for the first base hit. 0 Outfield Will' Be Strong Tile outfield p)ositions will be consp)icumous for thme inability of the fanis to see,the mugs of Bifly Lowvry andl Pinhead H-inson p)atrolling the gardens. Lowry was a sweet fieldler if ever there was one. I dhid nlot see all of Carolinas games the pa2st baseball season, b)ut in those I did see Billy never madle a mistake in fielding the balls hit in his direction. Hlinson was a powerful hitter comblined with a good fielder. Taking the place of these almuni of Carolina will be Truman Hioxi tt, Earl D)unhlam and John Leitner. Dunhlam seems to be a natural inl all sports, and baseball is no excep)tion. While patrolling center field his glove becomes a tar bucket. John Leitner is troubled with a bum knee, buit is expected to be ready for dulty when the sealson opens. Iloxitt showed hlis worth last year as lie turned inl an excellent season chasing the big round flies in the outer gardens. * Star Battery Forecast PIl put our b)attery comb)ination at the top right now. .Thmey may fool 'Bull, but I think Coachl Ted Petoskey has a good collection of p)itchlers and( catchers. Joe Gruganl canl be placed at the top of the list of pitching aces. Joe has been the work horse for the Gamecock diamond crews for the p)ast two seasons. Being able to toss balls thlat opposing batters can't keep an eye on is not his only asset. Joe is a good hitter, lie had about a .300 average thme past season, and that is p)lenty good for a tw irler. Waldo Ilymnan, sophomore, is pushing.behind Joe, and seems destined for a good year. Waldo played. Americani Legionl ball and( carried( his Florence teamn to the top onl his right arm. (Gus Crawford, of last year's staff, is expected to join the team after spring p)ractice is over. Give Gus a chaw of Bull Durham, and watch himl go I Marcus Stark amnd Ray Player, are both start ing their varsity careers this season. They pack plenty on1 the b)all, and are expected to give plenty of service to Petoskey. Alteration of All Kinds m40 ai See Intra-I drid A Prcislee Ganid To be Tamorrbw At Stadium Bammers To Be Guests; Contest To Start At 2:30; Injuries Hit Squad Hard Tomorrow afternoon at the Uni versity of South Carolina Stadium, the Gamecock gridiron hopefuls will close out the regular spring prac tice sessions with an intra-squad game between the veterans and the newcomers. The squad is depleted by injuries, but will be close to full strength. Coach Rex Enright stated that plenty of work had to be left un dotic, but the spirit of the squad was magnificent. Four more weeks at least could be used by Enright in preparing the Gamecocks for the murderous schedule ahead of them next fall. Ken Roskie and Fred Lytle joined the squad immediately after the end of basketball season but are out again now. Roskie received a cracked rib in Tuesday's workout on the gridiron, and Lytle was knocked out of the rest of the prac tices with a "busted" lip. The contest tomorrow is sched uled to begin at 2:30 and will be run off as a regular contest. The black team will consist of Birds who are receiving their first taste of varsity competition, while the red team will include veteran Gamecocks and some of the upper class bohunks. Coach Enright states that the of fensive play of the squad has round ed out better than expected, but the defense play still has work to do. Due to high scoring backs and in jury riddled lines the game tomor row promises to turn out a high scoring affair. Only BAM club members 'will be admitted to the game. The grid duel will be followed by *a BAM club barbecue, with members of the Carolina coaching staff and all Gamecock footballers being invited to attend free of charge. It will be the first opportunity for the BAM Xfl-RS to meet the athletes. Bo'asting of a team that consis tently bowls around the 275 aver age, the Gamecocks wvill go into the opener as favorites. The Birds will compete for the rest of the season ini a city league. Westmoreland Is Selected Honorary Ca>tain By Squad Preston Compiled 350 Points This Season Against 194 Last Year Preston Westmoreland, ace for ward on the 1940-4X Gamecock basketball team, was selected hon orary captain of the past season by his teammates, announced Coach Frank Johnson. The total paumber of points shot by Westmoreland this season far hurpassed his total for last year. Pres shot 350 points during 24 games this season. Last year he hit the basket for 194 points in an 18 game schedule. Westmoreland was selected on the all-tournament team this year as he sparked the Birds to the finals in the Southern Conference basketball tourney before being downed by Duke. Pres shot con sistent against all opposition. Usually captains of the various major sports are selected before the season. This year Athletic Di rector Enright has broken the rule in football and basketball and the members of the teams choose the fellow they think deserves the honor most, after the season is completed. Gamecock Fencers Meet Washington And Lee Team The Gamecock fencing squad wi, meet the fencers of 'Washington and Lee tonight at Lexington, Virginia The team left yesterday for Lexing ton and reached Virginia last night. The Birds wvill participate wvith the Washington and Lee team in a three weapon match wvhich are the foil, duelling, and the sabor. South Carolina wvill be represent. ed by a five man squad wvho are: Harold Glenn, Carl Atkins, Abe Grossman, Jack Reese and Bob Morgan. So far this season the Birds have broken even in their matches. They won over the Citadel several weeks ago and lost to North Carolina in their first match this year. T. Gittman, proprietor of Gittman's Book store of Colum bia, thought enough of Harry Geech Lofton's fistic ability that he awarded Geech with his annual medal for being the most out standing Gamecock boxer on the squad. This is the twenty-second annual award of this medal. . T. Gittman was the first box ing coach at the University of South Carolina and in 1921 he guided the Birds in what is be lieved to have been the first in tercollegiate fistic meet in the south. Carolina boxing P. C. at that time. Mr. Gittman described Harry's fistic rise to Southern Conference championship as simply "amaz ing." Besides his unorthdox style of boxing, "Geech" displays a fine form of aggressiveness which probably has some bearing upon the selection of him as the winner of the medal. The Gittman medal is never awarded to the same per son twice. Tenements 1 and 2 0 There are 24 teams entered for the basketball intra-murals and ' each team will play about 10 games. As the play-off, the eight highest teams, according to percentage, will meet in a tournament to declare a champion. Games will be played five nights a week in the Field House and the gym. Mr. Crawford stated that all those comtemplating on participating in intra-mural boxing should begin training immediately. The boxing preliminaries will begin about April 1. Mr. Crawford has given his as surance that no one will be hurt in the boxing and as further pre cautions for this, headgears will be worn and rounds will be only a minute and a half Ic.ig. Everyone who is interested in this should give his name and weight to Mr. Crawford right away. For the individuals convenience, the applica tion may be mailed as campus mail. This boxing is given for the pleas ure and information that anyone will gain from it. Wrestling intra-muralists should also begin training right away. Ap plicants should turn in their name and weight to Mr. Crawford as soon as possible. No definite date has been set for the beginning of this. The various tenements and fra ternities should begin work on the track for the track intra-murals. The track teams will be limited to 12 men and will begin shortly. Softball will probably create as much interest as any and it will be gin as soon as the weather permits. Full equipment will be furnished by the University. Swimming intra-murals will start popping in two weeks now and all students desiring to enter should be gin getting in swim trim.
