On High School Day
Members Will Accept
If They Are Excused
By Absence Committee
Members of the University of
South Carolina band have been in
vited to play for the annual high
school day at Darlington, S. C.,
sometime in April, according to
Dean George E. Olsen, Director of
the band.
"Members of the band will accept
the invitation, if the committee on
absences allows class cuts free from
penalties," stated the Dean.
The band is now working on sev
eral concert arrangements after a
football season dominated by march
ing music. Two of the pieces now
in the repertoire are "Seminola," a
foxtrot, and "Andante Cantabile" by
Tchaikowsky. The "Andante Can
tabile" is from the symphony from
which the popular song, "Moon
Love," was taken.
Music for the Southern Confer
ence boxing matches was also fur.
nished by the band.

New York (Special)-What you
see above does not depict a meal.
It shows what a Belgian gets to eat
during an entire day.
He gets:-eight ounces of bread
and one-third of one ounce of fat.
He gets an ounce and one-half of
meat, no bigger than a third of a
package of cigarettes and not even
one whole potato. Then he has an
ounce and three-quarters of sugar.
This photograph was taken in
New York City, but is based upon
authentic information from over
seas, sent to the Nailonal Commit
tee on Food for the Small Democra
cies, of which Mr. Herbert Hoover
is honorary chairman. Three faihine
experts whom he ordered into Bel
glum reported on the true situation.
Theoretically, rations are larger.
For instance, there should be five
potatoes in the above picture, also
a tiny heap of beans, a bit of oat
meal and some "ersatz" coffee. But

food to supply even these terribly
restricted rations simply does not
exist. What you see in the picture
is what a Belgian actually gets and
must live upon-today.
What does this mean?
A human needs 2400 calories daily
to exist-3600 if he works.
The food values on the plate rep
resent only 1038 calories.
Slow starvation, this. Literally!
But worse is to come!
By February's end the bread ra

from overseas.
By early March, slow starvation

A regional student conference on
food for the small democracies will
begin today in the lobby of Sims
college at 3 o'clock, Irene Gillespie,
vice-president of the regional com

committee is a division of the Na

people in the conquered countries of
Europe.
Representatives from various col

to attend. A similar conference was
held at Duke University last month
in order to inaugurate the program
in Southern colleges.
Phases of the conference will be
a student debate on the Hoover
Plan by members of the University
International Relations Club in the
Euphradian Literary Hall from 4 to
5:30 p. m.; and an open forum led
by Mr. Milton Brown, of the Na
tional Committee on Food for the
Small Democracies, in the same hall
from 7:30 to 9:30 p. m.
There will also be a discussion on
campus campaigning.
The National Committee has been
organized particularly in colleges in
the North and West, and the dele
gates of the Duke conference are
planning to expand the program
throughout the Southern schools.

Flat Tire Br
Grips With
By AL EGERTON
"Sure it's a flat tire," Quinn
remarked disgustedly, "I ought to
know, Ive been out with enough
of them."
With sundry murmurings and
mutterings, a large portion of the
Gamecock staff piled out of the
car to survey the situation. A flat
tire it was and a beauty. Had it
been any flatter there wouldn't
have been any tire.
When the accident occurred, the
staff was on the way back to the
campus, having t a k e n Duck
Sweatman home after the weekly
blowout up town. The auto was
proceeding up Main when a tell
tale bumping became. noticeable.
At first attributed to the rough
paving, it was revealed in its true
light when the car began to list
rather heavily to the right.
While Quinn and Sloan ran
sacked the auto for tools to
