USC'll have a good teain next year. Proof? Ted Twomey, massive
and silent line coach, is reported to have opened ip and made such a
statement. Stan Stasica says it. Bo Carter says it. A. B. Fennell savs
it. We repeat it.
Clemson won't; and they've already started drafting excuses. Scoop
Latimer, Clemson publicity man who writes in Furman's home city,
states that an institution's athletic team cannot be as good as usual when
the coaching staff is drafted into the army. His example: Bob Jones,
Tiger end coach. Shall we send flowers?
And with those predictions we'll pass along a spring practice bit of
philosophy that Dutch Elston handed Angelo D.iMarrio. "A guard,"
Dutch stated, "is only a quarterback with his brains knocked out."
WHAT'S IN A NAME
"Do you know that girl there?" Boh Griffith asked David Aiken
Wednesday.
"No, what's her name," replied Aiken.
"Coco," said Griffith.
"Coco? Gee!" was the rejoinder.
"Sure Coco Gee is her name, but I thought you didn't know," the puz
zled Griffith muttered.
All we gotta say is that we'll take hot chocolate without the marsh
mallow.
I am not waging a personal war; all my vitriol is directed toward an
oligarchic political machine.
-Paul League.
LETTER TO MYSELF:
Dear Scoop: They asked you why you hated a political machine?
Primarily because I love this University I said. Not to mention
that it isn't democratic.
How did a political machine affect your love for Alma Mater?
Take the case of a high school graduate who plans to study at
Carolina, I replied. First he investigates the school and finds the
set-up whereby the campus is run by a political machine.
"I would rather go there than Klemson," he reasons. "But I
intend to be a nice fellow and would like to be a class officer or
perhaps have some other honor, when I go to college, but I refuse
to bow down to the gods of the Carolina law school to become a
campus leader there."
You're not hinting that another whispering campaign could start,
they asked.
Certainly, I replied. And that's just why my love for Carolina's
good name leads me to indict machine politics before my student
body.
There now. WVe've gone and indicted 'em. And with that we drop
discussion of politics for a while. Besides the fact that we are tired of
it, andl that it's not worth losing friends over, we just don't like to be
hopping tip wvashing our hands every few minutes.
NOTES ON THE MARGIN OF A JOURNALISM BOOK-a dream
of a girl. . . I want a girl to he like a cirgarette-warm, smooth, 'lender,
and white; one that will satisiy, give a lift, and not irritate; one that
I can discard when she burns up. ..
Czarina Celia P. Swecker, of the University Cafeteria, spends more
of her time chastizing her over-worked University help, the boys and
girls that ;tre paying their own way to school, than she dloes preparing
the food she sells. . .this is not political, so we indict her, and ask
University officials, who ironically enough eat in other spots, to look
into this matter. . .we tunderstand a new map of Carolina will have a
direct connection from the mess-hall to the infirmary.

McKissick should go the credit, for allowing its retturn.

By.School Seal
Latin Line Tell
Why Clemson Is,
And Why We Ain't
"Emollt it mores nec sinit
esse feros", reads the Carolina
seal.
Which is perfectly good Lat
in-if it isn't Greek-for "Mold
(their) cdstoms lest (they) be
come savages".
Or-"unless you send your
offspring to Carolina, 0 parents,
you are liable to find them
springing off into trees and eat
ing raw mutton some day".
To back the sagacity of this
statement, the seal has the pic
ture of two Greek godesses to
whip up the flagging desires of
prospective students. Probably
the authors of the seal were asr
sy that Venus was an Italian.
Hovering over all is an eagle
-symbolizing, no doubt, the
watchful eye of Deans Child*,
Olsen, and Chase. The same
could have been done with Bal
lentine's three circles (Purity,
Body, and Flavor).
Whatever else it does, the seal
explains forever one thing that
has been bothering us when it
tells how "ye shall be barbarous
if ye come not to Carolina".
Now we know what's wrong
with the boys from Clemson.
