CHIT CHATTER
SMUDGES BY NANCY PADGETT
You'll agree with me, when I say this sure is a measley world. Fact
is, the only compliment a boy can give his squaw is "UGH ! You're as
pretty as a speckled pup." Anyhoo, braves, you must remember "Beauty
is only skin and cold cream deep", and beneath' those ugly mugs, there is
something good, maybe.
A horse and a flea
And three blind mice
Sat on a curbstone
Shooting dice.
The horse slipped
And fell on the flea
The flea said,
"Oops! There's a horse on me."

The Horse (White Horse) . . . In observance of the 73rd birthday of
Pi Kappa Alpha, the local heroes will have their annual Founder's Day
banquet on the night of February 28, 1941 at eight o'clock in the Crystal
Room of the Columbia Hotel. Alumni and active members from all over
the state have been invited to attend the feed. J. Gordon Hughes of Union,
past national president of Pi K A will be the chief speaker and sandman.
Following this sit-down strike, their Formal track meet will be in the
Jefferson Hotel with Buster Spanin as the boogie-woogie mai. There
will be four no-breaks and one special no-break exclusively for the Piker's
and their dates, I guess. "Dream Girl of Pi K A" will be played for the
special no-break and will come immediately after the grand march-squad
right. Sponsors for the dance are: Betty Miller for Dan Gibbes, Presi
dent; Betty Wertz for Bob SCHWINN (is that the way to spell it, Kirby?),
Vice-President; Lollie McCants for Jim Galloway. Secretary; Leone Strick
land for G. C. KIRBY, Corresponding Secretary and Publicity Director;
and Florence Williams for R. G. Scarborough, Treasurer.
The Fleas . . . The Kappa Alpha's took Frampton Toole under wing
last Wednesday night and initiated him into their Foreign Legion. The
Pi Kappa Phi's did their duty by four boys Monday night and flashed their
guiding flash light in their faces and initiated Jimmie Bell, John Holland,
Billy Cullum and John McGowan . . . The Sigma Chi's are adding one
more to their hall of Sweethearts. The one and only Bill Carpenter . . .
also, they pledged John Porter and Francis Neville . . . The bartendering
teddy beers of Phi Sigma Kappa initiated Harold Glenn, Allan Driggers,
and Joe Lever, Wednesday night. Monday night, they will honor the boys
with an informal supper at Harvey's . . . And now to the sublime . . .
the whirling dervishes of Kappa Delta 'vill give the last degree to Dody
Brown, Barbara Ballentine, Marie Montague, Anne McCutcheon, Paula
Zeigler, Mildred Salmon, Frances Randall, Frances Simpson, Shirley Sum
ner, and Lil Bollin on February 27th . . . The Zeta's pledged Betty Mc
Laurin . . . Frances Hurley, Nancy Bryant, Ann Dixon, Irl Marjorie Jones,
and Peggy Horton are the new voting members of Chi Omega.
Three Blind Mice . . . Over at the ATO there are roomers and rumors
to the effect that one saint (Valentine or Patrick) has completed his series
of enebriations, that is according to the local chatter of the man with the
best telephone voice at number 23982 . . . Also, the docile introverts re
port that last week end, it was decided that rather than join the Navy to
see the world, they would do it through the portholes of a Cub plane, so
with each little member lit with plenty of sunshine and fresh air, they
were on their weary way to Florence (remote nation near the Republic
of Horry County). But alas, the ill-natured grandma of the Goddess of
Oil Lines frowned on them, and guess what happened, they were forced
down in a green pasture in the heart of Sumter county, due to the fault
of a busted oil vessel.
The Curbstone . . . The sure-foot's of Chi 0 entertained in honor of their
pledges, Tuesday night with a dance at Sloan's Studio . . . The Pi Phi's
are having initiation Tuesday night, to be followed by a banquet at the
Columbia Hotel in honor of the ones just lassoed in . . . The Tri, Wide,
and Handsome Delta's are to have as their guest for this week, Miss Gladys
Souder, province president . . . Some yell "Onward P. C.", but to Lollie
McCants and Mary Lide Doty, it's on to Annapolis, Hail! They will
pace the cobblestones up there this week-end . . . Lucy Moore, Sara Hughes,
and Lib Hughes stooped to conquer and went to Citadel for the. Dances . . .
Sara Frew Hamilton gave the tea-hounds of Dead Timber (Wake Forest)
a treat 'and went up to their mid-winters.
Dice . . . Virginia "Speckled" Copeland, John Brooks, and Bert Hill
went up to Hei)dersonville Sunday with Lucy Beck Jowitt to look the
situation over . . . It's farewell to Emily Johnson, for she has forsaken
all others for the gloom of Winthrop College . . . Edith Ford returnedl
to the teeming mietropolis of Loris, to attend( the wedding of her sister
Bucky. And what (10 you knowv ? She caught the bride's bouquet...
You kniow what that means, or haven't you ever been to a wedlock cere
mony . . . Flo Cooper yisited the University of Geeechies to attend the
Pi K A formal there . . . Kay Rhodes is off to Atlanta this week-end to
see her claimed man . . .while her (docile roomie. Edith Schiwartz. is off
to Athens to see her claimed man . . . Anybody else staking their claim?
Oops! Philip Wilnmethi is the new president of the up- and( down frat
of S A E . . . Other officers are: Laurie Hicks, Vice-President; Secretary,
Eustace Miller ; and Frank Lever pays the bills . . . Next week they will
initiate Sam King, Bobby Lumpkin, T. B. Fersnier and1 Mclver Riley...
On March 7 they wvill have their usual Founder's Day banquet sans orchies

land during the Spring holidays. Host will be Francis Collins.
Oops I Oops !! Then there's the one about the (drunk man wvalking dlown
the street and stoppedl to lean up against the wall of a huilding. A cop
camie along and said, "What (do you think you are dloing ?" So the dIrunik
moved away and the building fell (downi . . . The L.og.

Presto!....With a little black paint
and a brush the picture of your "one
and only" emerges a chinanan or
still better a Rhett Butler, a villain,
or some other character.
It seenis that Lela 1-1ughs has
taken up a unique hobby.
Not so very long ago Lela was
sitting in the room of one of her
friends. The friend remarked that
she was tired looking at T6m's (?)
picture; so she begins writing his
name all over the frame and ends
up by putting huge ears on the guy.
(This is where Lela got her idea).
To the rescue of her friend Lela
comes a flying and immediately
turns poor ole Tom into the spit
image of handsome Rhett Butler.
The effects were so good that Lela
was soon called on by other girls
(who were apparently tired of
looking at the same old photograph
day in and day out.) to transform

With a big smile Lela said, "It's
fun until you run out of pictures
and that's where I ran into trouble."
It seems that the last time Lela
was home she got "ye ole paint

ain't fit to print-according to Lela.
Hler favorites are Chinanen. She
paints more of them than any
others.
She has done pictures for several
of the girls who live near her on
third floor Sims. But lo and behold
after this is read she will probably
have to open up a studio because
she extends a cordial invitation to
all who are tired looking at that
