Ka last'night initiated Bobby Bleakley, Jack Tobias, and Frampton Toole...The Pi Kappa Phis are planning to take John Holland, Jimmy Bell, Pat Hester, and Billy Cullum through the culminating ceremony in the near future ...Soon to officially become Chi Omegas are: Nancy Bryant, Catherine LaBorde, Frances Hurley, Irl Marjorie Jones, Peggy Horton, and Ann Dixon...While Pi Kappa Sigmais planning to pin up Ed Scott, Craig Sargent, Grover Bowers, Jr., David .Fulmer... TheCan tueexhbie Co.-ed Dink Gaines Atlantic City Dink Gaines, Carolina's assistant dean of women, is leaving Monday evening on the Silver Meteor to attend the annual National Asso ciation of Deans of Women in At lantic City from Feb. 18-21. She will also visit in Stanford, Conn., and Yale university before she re turns to the campus. The theme of the conference will be "Facing the future of women's education in a reorganizing world." Dink plans to attend the "All-As sociation Luncheon," for which Dean Sarah G. Ilanding, president of the Association, will 1preside. She is from the University of Ken tucky and was a guest of Carolina's Christian Service institute. At this luncheon, Dink will hear Miss Ruth Strang, Columbia uni versity, who will discuss the plans of education institutions for women in a reorganizing world. She will also attend other meetings from which she expects to gain ideas about other campus groups. The convention will close with a formal banquet next Friday eve ning at which time Mrs. Frances Dance Satur Sponsored E The University gymnasium willC be the scene of the second semester 'get acquainted" dance, sponsored by the Social Cabinet. The dance will begin immediately following the Carolina-Citadel boxing matches Saturday night, according to Willis Beall, chairman of the cabinet. This dance will be held in honor of all new students and the Cita del and Carolina boxing teams and will be strictly informal, acquaint ances being made by self-introduc tion. There will also be a floor committee to keep the stag line moving and insure a good time for everyone. Due to the fact that the boxing matches are to be held in the field house, special permission has been granted to have the dance in the gym. This is the first time this current school year that the gym has been used due to the Naval R. 0. T. C. So boys, get to the telephone and get your dates and girls give the old stags the one-two and let's all swing out and get acquainted. There will be a small admission of 50 cents per couple. All faculty members are invited to attend as special guests. Y Visits Schools Over The State Numerous visits are being made to high schools throughout South Carolina by deputation teams of the Y. M. and Y. W. C. A. Deward Brittain and Adelyn Lipscomb are co-chairmen of the joint commit tee. This week trips have been made to Bamberg, Allendale, Chester and Great Falls. Many trips are al readyv on the calendar for the re manling wveeks of February. Because of the new cut system it is necessary to have more people taking part in the deputation pro gram at Carolina, Brittain said this week. For Convention Perkins, secretary of labor, will dis :uss "Women's Opportunities in In dustry." Dink said some of the many things she expects to try to find out about are sorority problems and how they are managed in other uni versities, about freshmen orienta tion and what other schools are doing for their new students and more effective means of counseling students. Dink hopes to hear Dr. Harry M. Fosdick speak while she is away. In New Haven besides visiting and seeing her friends at Yale, she plans to visit with the children at Wel come Hall, a community house at which she did Y work last year while studying there. In Atlantic City, Dink will be a guest at Haddon Hall, where the convention meets. Many national education meetings are held there. Last year was the first in many years that the University of South Carolina did not send a representa tive to the convention. Mrs. Arnie Childs will not be able to attend the convention. -day Night ,y Cabinet Club Entertained By Mrs. Hawkins Mrs. J. Hawkins, sponsor, enter tained the members of Chi Delta Phi literary sorority last Friday evening at their home in Wilmot avenue'-. Katherine Rector, president, in troduced the prospective new mem bers who submitted samples.of their literary ability. The girls on the program were Sarah Flinn, who read a feature story, a poem, and an editorial; Lucy Carland, who also read a poem. Other new pledges at the meeting were Nancy Padgett, Vir ginia Hodges, Edith Swartz. After the program Mrs. Hawkins served delicious refreshments for the social hour. The active members of the chap ter will have a meeting tomorrow afternoon in Simms college at 4 o'clock to elect officers for this se mester. , Co-eds Still Work For British Cause In order to do their portion of wvork for aid to the European coun tries to which war has brought death and destruction, the co-eds have been knitting clothes and roll ing bandages for "Bundles of Brit ain." This work is still being car ried on throughout the women's domain. The co-eds are also coop)erating wvith the Red Cross by contributing clothes, blankets and other various articles for wvhich they have no use. The Red Cross gathers this ma terial together and sends it to those people who have lost all of their material possessions in the wvar. Valentine Candy ECKERD'S 1530 Main Street .Martha W and Wh COMMUN r t ain Glee Club Makes, Tour The Woman's Glee Club of the university will make its annual tour Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17, 18 and 19. On Monday the Glee Club will have a full schedule. They will ap pear at Whitmire High school, Whitmire, S. C., and Preszyterian College, Clinton, S. C.; Anderson High School, Anderson, S. C., and that night will give a performance at Clemson College, Clemson, S. 'C. On Tuesday they will sing at Easley High, Easley, S. C.; Green ville High, Greenville, S. C., and Greer High, Greer, S. C. They will appear at Wofford College, Spartanburg, S. C., that nighf. On Wednesday they will make two appearances, the first at Union High, Union, S. C., and the sec ond at Winnsboro High, Winns boro, S. C. They will return to the campus noon Wednesday. The Glee Club will sing in the Shandon Baptist church the last Sunday of this month. They have also received invita tions to sing at Fort Jackson and the First Presbyterian church. Co-eds Enjoy Sports Of Various Types "Co-eds, watch your figures," warns Miss Nancy Pope, director of physical education for women at the University of South Carolina. "With the trend toward block plaid skirts and wasp waists this spring, extra poundage gained dur ing winter months of non-exercis ing has no place on the campus," Miss Pope continued. The university this semester of fers a varied selection of courses in physical education for co-eds with an eye to a trim figure as well as healthful exercise, the director pointed out. Horse-back riding and bowling, two of the most popular courses, will be offered as well as basket ball, volly ball and badminton. Classes in swimming will be held for beginners. Archery, which de velopes a keen eye, encourages good posture as- well. "Most degrees at the university require two years of gym credi After a student completes the re quired work, she often discontinues physical education, thereby doing away with the only regular, guided exercise she takes," Miss Pope stated. "Students should feel, not that they are being forced to take the courses for credit, but for the bene fits in health she received from it," Miss Pope concluded. The girls of the university have eagerly cooperated with Mrs. Mc Kissick and other people who have sponsored relief work on the cam pus. YW Gives Party At Penitentiary For the women of the peniten tiary, the Y. W. C. A. entertained with a Valentine party last night at 7 o'clock. Miss Flo Gary, chap lain, made. the arrangements with the Carolina girls. Adelyn Lipscomb had charge of the gaines and Katherine Rector gave some readings. This is the second time that the University Y. W. has given them a party. Ducky Brockman, president, and Elinor Flinn conducted a discus sion on the racial question during the junior Y meeting yesterday aft ernoon a 4 in Sims college. This was to conform with the National Inter-racial Relations week now being observed. The sophomore Y group began plans for their annual fashion show wvhich will be given this month.
