publically active opposition factions
are the group backing Dick Ander

the widely publicized Non-Partisan
R League.
Brittain Won't Run
League draft-nominee Deward B.
Brittain announced definitely last
week that he would not be a candi
date, giving outside employment and
numerous campus activities as tieces
sitating the move. Vice- Presidential
nonlinee Virginia Cardwell has also
made a tentative announ(ement of
withdrawal but active plans are go
ing forward to keep the Non-l'arti
sans in the center of the March
stumping.
From thc "inside boys" there are
only suspicions of what might hap
pen in the way of other candidates
or political alliances. The chief idea
stated to be the defeat of the elusive
group known popularly as the "ma
chine". Confusion is added to the
issue, however, )y this same avowal
from all potential office-seekers.
The jockeying of the two major
factions for position appears to be
keeping the minor parties, whose
votes are needed for a decisive elec
tion, from taking indefinite steps.
No Definiie Paziy
Opposition to the present admin
istration, state observers, is having
difficulty in consolidation into a party
with effective election influence. Sev
eral leaders making only semi-public
or private statements announcing op
position to politics in the present con
trolling party.
WVithin the ranks of administration
forces, where the most active work is
taking place, indecision as to candi
dates other than Simpson is credited
to disagreement among party leaders
as to "who shall run for what."
The actual elections and official
campaign speeches will not take place
until after the spring holidays.

Twenty New Bells
Will Be Installed
Soon, Chase Says
Dean Asks Students
To Cooperate While
Trial Period Is On
After a campus-wide survey of
the electric bell system yesterday,
John A. Chase, Jr., dean of admin
istration, announced that several
new bells will be installed and that
the locations of a few of the bells
already up will be changed.
"The administration realized from
the first that adjustments would
have to be made," Dean Chase said.0
"The only thing we could do was to
install a few bells and then find out
how many more we need."
Until adjustments are made, the
old college bell and the electric
gongs will be rung to announce
classes.
The administration plans, pending
a trial period, to place additional
bells in the following locations: inl
side the canteen; on the first and
second floors of Leconte; on all
floors pf Sloan, Legare (ten .1), Da
vis, IHarper (ten. 17) and Petigru;
on the second and third floors of
DeSaussure (ten. 13); in the rear
of Simms. and in the rear of Vard
law, Woodrow and Burney.
Dean Chase requests students to
cooperate with the administration
during the trial period.
