- Hello -
My n1ame is not F. ). R. Jonles so I won't break a tradition. This is my
entrance column. Feeling like a spring chicken with all ,its pin feathers
pulled out is a heck of a feeling I bet'cha. One thing is certain-that is that
that chicken can't feel more uncomfortable than your scribe 'Bull as lie
puts out his first problem child, pats it, frets with it. and finally puts it to
bed. Well. -I've beeii hitting a it all aloig-ieaning this column-i-Is va'
er haint ya g)nna like it ? ! ? ? ? ?
- Time For A Win -
A tine comes ini all good fellows span of life when lie will rise and over
throw his mightier opponent, and then he will become the king bee. That
same rule no doubt was made in reference tn Carolina and Clemson. We'd
rather not say flow many years back it has been since we have overcome
Clemson ini a major sport. Last year's victory over the Tigers in tennis
was the first overthrow of the Clemsonites in what we call a minor sport in
several years.
But the time has arrived-Country Gentlemen expecting the same old jinx
to work have been hitting town today in flocks. (ly the way, what is a
bunch of meek Tigers called ?) Carolina mien can only mutter insults and
pray for the jinx to break.
Tonight for the first time in many moons, Carolina rules an even chance
of winning over the traditional opponents. The. Field louse will be the
scene as the Gamecocks go into the fray with cyclinders full blast. Clemson
will throw her high scoring Buchanan and Craig against Gamecock ace
Westmoreland.
- Pres Wes Hits 'Em -
Pres Westioreland seems to be the shineing light of the Birds so far tliis
season. Against the Citadel last Monday night, Pres hit the basket 16
times from the floor, and dropped in 2 foul shots. This scoring spree added
up to exactly 34 points. These 34 points were high enough to tie the conl
ference record set several years ago.
Pres has 110 points to his credit in a sum total of five confereice gaies.
An uncanny eye for the basket has kept the slender Bird oil top of the heap.
I say let's boo:t him for all-conference forward right now.
- Whole Team Aces -
The floor men in basketball, like the linemen in football, never seem to
get their names in tihe streamer headlines. In spite of this there are other
players scrapping for the Garnet and Black. Fred Lytle, our pivot man, is
plenty goo(d on retrieving backboard rebound. Lanny Lofdahl is the best
floor man we've seen this year, excepting a couple of those George Washing
ton guys, who bowled us over earlier in the season.
Junmie Ilymson, reserve guard and forward, needs about half-a-foot more
in height to make him greater than lie already is. At the guards, Ken Roskie,
Dick Anderson and Earl Dunham stick to their men like flies to cane syrup,
besides setting up plenty of our shots. On the reserve list is "Spec" Evatt
and Gene Ilaynes at center, and tiny Ted Brooker at forward.
- Revive Interest in Basketball -
A new idea has been broached to me, which, I'm sorry to say is not orig
inally by me. It is to foster interest in basketball by keeping closer tab on
the players. We have this system used in baseball and football, why not in
basketball ? It might mean a little more work on the score keepers bnt it
would keep u.s dumb guys more informed.
It is run like this : The score keeper checks oii all the shots attempted
for the little round basket and the number made. Also the foul shots ,and
number made. The personal are also added in. Tle total nuimber of points
made by each player is given. After this information is received one figures
out the percentages of each player in regard to shots made and missed. It
is the same basis as the batting percentages of the baseball players.
Biaseball is a year 'rounad spoirt, and( wp believe basketball could be made
just as interestinig if we would all go to the trouble of figuring these per
centages.
Just for exanmple take thme scoring of \Vestmoreland in the Citadel game.
Pres attempltedl 32 shots and made 16 of them, for a hit-miss average of
.500. Ie attenmpted 4 foul shot s and( made 2 for another .500 average. lIe
had two personial fouls called against him. II is toital for thme game was 34
ploints. Bernie Bass, erstwhile baseball tabbier is the originator of this plan.
andh has p)romisedl to check all the home gamesc of the Birds to lie publishcd
oni the sports page of this rag.
- Spring Practice Returns -
Yelling like a bunch of Indians oni the warpath, aind running around Melton
Field ats if Yehudi was behind thmem the gri<dders are passing the first week
of sprinig practice into oblivion. L ast fall Carolina had the best football
spirit ever, I thought. Spring practice sessionis have changed this opinion
dIrastically. Wh'len a fellow yells to encourage his windled teammates. whlen
lie himsel f is out of breath, then they really have the spirit.
About sixty fellowvs greetedh Rex Enrighlt AMonday and settled down to the
seriouus businmess of wvhipping themselves into shape. Scholastic dIifficulties
knocked oine player out of the raiiks of the Enirighit wvarriors-hmis name?
"D)e Jeep" Urban. Jeep) was a natural inl all athmletics. I le is (out of school
now-whiat's thAt about spilled milk?? ?
Coach Enrighit is trying to get spring practice gamnes wvith other schools.
This is aim attemipt to relieve the monlotonly of spring practice, when the
gridd(ers pound each other unitil they get tired of seeing tIle same face over
amnd oiver again across the hine. Th'lese practice gaimes will be played behind
closed (doors.
- Boxers Victory Hungry -
Carolina's boxers have been running into a Ipeck of trouble this seasoni.
'fhiy startedl thme season off with two strikes called oil them. Dick Baxter,
prize heavyweight of last year is gonle, and( Sol Blatt had to (drop) boxinlg
becauise of a l)a(l nose, and also because of his campus dluties. Baxter
was a finalist ill last years' tournament, and( BIatt was crownedl king of tIme
135 pouniders.
I Ilarry lInfton is, in my opinion, the most colorful boxer ever to step into
the ring. I Ie slinigs those loopinig rights unltil his gloves just barely stay on
his hainds. Against Maryland, in our mlatchl with themi earlier in thme season,
lie stepped into thme ring with a fever of 102 and( foughlt like a cyclone burst
loose to take thme (decision.
