THE CHANGING SCENE
A tattered red football jersey worn by the scarecrow who
stands silent guard over the new sown grass of the baseball
infield is the last vestige of scenery reminiscent of the football
season and all attention is now focused on the winter sports
* program.- Basketball, boxing, and the minor sports swimming
and fencing move to the center of the athletic stage.
Out of their coop in the field house has emerged what appears
to be the most potent cage combination that has adorned Caro
lina hardwood in several years. From the Cauliflower hothouse
in the basement of the gym comes word that all is not sunshine
and roses in prospect for the boxing squad. The mitt team
which faces its first baptism of leather tomorrow night at
College Park, Maryland, will have to rely on four untried per
formers.
In the field of intramurals tackle football has given away to
V touch. Due to the numerous casualties that resulted from
tackle football the authorities have seen fit to replace' it with
two-hand touch. It may be a lot less fun boys but think how
many more bandages will be available for British and Greek
consumption.
CAGERS BATTING .500
The Bird basketball'team that takes the floor tonight against
Furman has a .500 average to date against non-conference com
petition. The Johnsonians opened the season with a pair of
wins over Erskine and then played Santa Claus to Tech twice
during the holidays in dropping hard nip and tuck battles.
The. fifty-fifty average held good during this weeks invasion
of Georgia, as the Birds took an overtime contest from Georgia's
highly rated Bulldogs on Monday and were wrecked by Tech
for the third straight time on Thursday night.
This season's edition is built around sharp shogting Preston
Westmoreland, floor wizard Lanny Lofdahl, and towering
sophomore center Fred Lytle. Dick Anderson, Ken Roskie,
and Junie Hymson have furnished the rest of the momentum.
After the first six games Westmoreland had complied a totpl of
85 points for an average of better than 14 percent.
On the basis of performance the Hurricane shouldn't disturb
the Gamecocks feathers too much and although rather early
for predictions-when the roll is called in Raleigh they'll be
there.
BOXERS ARE QUESTION MARK
Tomorrow night when the Gamecock leather pushers climb
through the ropes of the Maryland ring, the hopes of Carolina
** will be pinned on four veteran pertormers who have proved
their ability, and on four boys who have never faced collegiate
competition before.
Captain Olin McDonald, who holds down the 120 slot, has
never lost a collegiate fight and is reigning bantanweight king
in the Conference. The other ringwise pugs are Willis Beall
at 145, Harry Lofton, 155, and Lucius Henson, lightheavy.
Both Beall and Lofton took the majority of the verdicts dur
ing last season's campaigning, and were semi-finalists in the
Southern Confe'rence tournament. Henson also looked promis
ing in his varsity debut last season. The four newcomers are
Horger at 127, Kirven, 135; Wilds, 165; and Urban at Heavy
wveight.' These boys have beeni working out regujarly but defi
nitely lack experience and seasoning.
For a number of years Gamecock boxing teams have been the
most consistent wvinners turned out at Carolina, but p)rospects
this year are not very cheering. The squad is not sufficiently
balanced to be powerful in dual meets, but should be strong in
tournament competition.

I GASP MY LAST
And now dear readers I am going to reward you who have
been dumb enough to read this far* with an announcement.
This is the last time that this column will appear in the pages
of The Gamecock. It's been a lot of work, a lot of worry, but
a hell of a lot of fun. At any rate I hope somebody (there must
be somebody who likes this stuff) enjoyed it as much as I did.
After this week I will take great pleasure in turning the
Sports pages over to Leonard Turnbull. Leonard is hard work
ing, conscientious and capable enough to make you forget all
about old Krowing With Kirby.

will try to improve their percent
age tonight when they entertain the
quintet from Furman University on
the Field House court. All three
of the Birds losses have been dealt
them by Georgia Tech.
Birds Beat Seceeders.
Carolina opened the season be
fore the Christmas holidays in Due
West against the Seceeders. The
Birds showed entirely too much
power for Erskine and bowled them
over 42 to 21. Flashing a strong
scoring duet in Westmoreland and
Lofdahl, the Birds racked up the
points quickly.
When Erskine came to the Game
cock city it was entirely a different
story as they outfought the Game
cocks and kept right on their heels
throughout the game and were never
far behind. The game ended in
the Birds favor 29 to 25.
During the holidays the Garnet
Black warriors journeyed over to
Augusta, Georgia to meet the
Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia
Tech. The Tech team was doped
out to be pre-season favorites in the
Southeastern Conference fight. The
Birds overcame an early Tech lead
and held their advantage until the
last minute of play when an En
gineer from Tech took the ball from
under the Gamecocks basket, drib
bled down the entire court and
tossed in the tieing two pointers.
.,anny Lofdahl, star forward,
cracked his head on the goal sup
ports behind the blackboard in a
vain attempt to block the shot.
Tech Whip 'Cocks.
The game went into an extra
period to decide the winner, and the
Birds were swamped under a bar
rage of goals tossed by the En
gineers, as they jumped into a seven
point lead. Two foul goals tossed
by Hymson completed the Birds
scoring and the game ended 39 to
34 in favor of Tech.
Tech accompanied Carolina back
to Columbia and New Year's Eve
night showed entirely too much
basket hitting prowness for the
Birds and bowled them over 44 to
35.
Coach Frank Johnson then took
his Birds over to his former alma
mater, the University of Georgia,
to meet the strong Bulldogs. Geor
gia was runner-up for the South
eastern conference crown last sea
son, and is currently ranked as one
of the three contenders for the title
this season along with Tech. The
Birds were facing odds but came
through in a thrilling game which
saw Lanny Lofdahl tie the game in
the last 20 seconds of play. WVest
moreland hit his stride that night
'as he racked up 19 points for the
Birds. In the extra p)eriod that
followed the Birds scored 6 points
to Georgia's 2 to take the game
48 to 44.
Tech Wins Third.
Meeting Georgia Tech for the
third time this season the Birds
still didn't flash enough magic in
the eyes of the Engineers and lost
their third one 41 to 34. Again the
Tech men won from the Birds in
a spree of last minute scoring. Caro
lina was leading 16 to 12 at the
half and held the lead until five
minutes before the end of the game
when the Engineers put on a scor
ing spree and ended the game with
the advantage.

team. These candidates show many
former high school greats, and look
very promising in their workouts.
Adhering to the rule that fresh
men get little publicity no stars are
to be pointed out as yet. All the
candidates show promise, and it
looks like a good varsity team in
the making for next year.

Fitzsimmons Elected
Vice-President Block C
Kit Fitzsimmons, manager of the
varsity football team, was elected
vice-president of the Block "C"
Club at the regular meeting of the
group Wednesday night. Fitzsim
mons replaces Billy Lowry who is
graduating in February.
The remainder of the session was
devoted to planning the Block "C"
(lance which wvill be held in the,
field house on the evening of Jan
uary 31. Music for the occasion
wvill be furnished by Johnny Mes
ncr's orchestra, which the club has
signedl in fulfillment of its promise
to secure a big time band.
A group picture of all members
will be taken next WVednesday eve
ning at 7 P. M. at Legare College.
The regular meeting will also be
held at this time.

Tennis Tournament
Both Boys And Girs
Will Play In Most
A tennis tournament will be held
at the University for boys and girls
commencing March 1.
The boy's tourney will be sepa
rate from the girls. Both the win
ner and the runner-up in the boys
division will hold the last two
places on the varsity squad. All
members of the varsity squad are
ineligible.
In the girls' division, the four
semi-finalists will compose a girls'
team that will represent the Uni
versity in competition. Their
schedule will be limited to about
four matches.
Grid Rules Are
Altered At Meet
Three Major Changes
To Effect Gridiron
1. Players may be substituted as
many times as desired during a
game; elimination of the rule pro
hibiting an incoming substitute
from communicating with his team
until after the ball has been put into
play; when substitutions are made
in the last two minutes of play in
the first or second half, the watch
will be stopped as usual when the
substitute comes on the field, but
will be started again as soon as the
substitution is completed.
2. The ball may be handed for
ward at any point behind the line
of scrimmage to any player and will
be treated as though it were a back
ward pass.
3. Fourth down forward passes
which become incomplete in the op
ponents end zone will be treated as
though they became incomplete on
the field of play instead of being
ruled touchbacks. On such plays,
the ball will go to the defending
team at the point where the ball
was put into play instead of the 20
yard line as in the p;ist.

Conference Boxing Tournament the
scrapping Birds open their season
tomorrow night against the strong
crew from the University of Mary
land. The bouts will take place at
College Park, Maryland.
Co-captain Olin 14acDonald will
be the big gun in the attack on
the Maryland Liners tomorrow
night. Mac has yet to be defeated
in college boxing, and is the South
ern Conference bantamweight
champ. Close behind him is Willis
Beall, fellow co-captain of the box
ing Birds who is favored to come
through in flying colors this sea
son in the welter weight slot.
Harry "Geech" Loften will also
be in there with his favorite style
of windmill boxing tomorrow in the
155 pound division. The other vet
eran ringman is Lucius Henson,
five sport man at the University,
and he is pronounced ready to go
in his weight class.
The pint-sized team numbers
nine eligible men, but is expected
to be strengthened second semes
ter, when Sunny Patterson and Sam
King will come into the ranks of
the eligible.
The tentative schedule also in
cludes matches with Columbus
University, Clemson and The Cita
del. The season will be climaxed
in late Febrmary, at a date still to
be announced, when the Southern
Conference bouts will again be
held here in Columbia.
