I ess YMCA Discussion G Tuesday Night At L List Of Eligible Group I Secretaries Asked To I The YMCA discussion group supper will be held Tuesday night, January .14, at 6 o'clock in the University High School cafeteria. The list below contains the names of those who are eligible to attend. Several groups did not report and any student who should be on the list is requested to check with his group secretary who, in turn, should contact the "Y" office. Of B4*dad" ill Pi Patrone Delegated To Blue Key Confab During Xmas Days Dies Committee Agent Is Outstanding Speaker At National Conyontion Joe Patrone, delegate of Caro lina's Blue Key chapter, attended the honorary fraternity's national convention at Kansas City, Mis souri, during the Christmas holi days. He stated that Carolina's chapter received special mention for its "fine" work. Highlight of the two-day con vention was the address by Dies Committee Investigating A g e n t John Metcalf. He spoke on the German-American Bund and his undercover membership in that or ganization while working for the Congressional committee. Nationally known as an Associ ated Press correspondent, Metcall spoke of the "German flag flowr over the American at bund meet ings." An agent for the Dies Commit tee as well as a newspaperman, he worked his way into the sabotage organization by hanging around beer-parlors. While, in the organi zation he was made a storm trooper and even worked as a speaker and exponent of Nazi ideals. He obtained removal to the Cal ifornia area in order to get infor mation about Nazi activities in that area. His most effective method of getting information from Leader Fritz Kuhn was "sending in bad re ports; then Kuhn would explode and let something out." Metcalf further said that the un American problem cannot be han dled by force. His three recom mended approaches are solving of the employment problem, educa tion in patriotism and legal proce dure. Placement Quizzes To Be Given Jan. 29 At LeConte Students entering the University of South Carolina for the first time in February must report Wed., Jan. 29 at 9 a. in. in room 406 Leconte college to take psychological and placement tests, John A. Chase, Jr., dean of administration, announced this week. A late registration fee of two dol lars will be charged for failure to meet this appointment and a fee of fifty cents will be charged for each test missed. Religious Educator And Wife Visit "Y" In Southern Travel Luncheon, Tea, Group Discussion Meeting Planned For Visitors Dr. and Mrs. C. P. Shedd of Yale Divinity School will be guests of the YMCA on January 14 and 15. This trip is a continuation of the tour that Dr. and Mrs. Shedd are making throughout the South. This tour includes discussions in Reli gion of Higher Education. Dr. Shedd has written two books which have made him known as a religi ous educator and leader on many college campuses. His books are "Two Centuries of Student Chris tian Movements" and his latest, "The Church-Followers Its Stu dents." These books have made Dr. and Mrs. Shedd the most prom inent figures in the student Chris tian movements. The YMCA has planned a sched tile of events for Dr. and Mrs. C. P. Shedd during their stay on the University campus. Students To Be Excused From Required Credits If Graduating In June No courses in hygiene will be offered at the University of South Carolina next semester, John A. Chase, Jr., dean of administration, announced this week. The head of the department of hygiene, Dr. Isadore Schayer, has been called into active duty in the medical corps of the National Guard. "This suspension of the depart ment of hygiene is only temporary," Dean Chase pointed out. "The uni versity will offer courses in hygiene next fall." Students who will be graduated in June or the following summer school will be excused from the requirements of any hygiene courses offered next semester, Dean Chase emphasized. However, these stu dents will have to substitute elec tives acceptable to their respective departments. "The university tried without suc cess to secure a man qualified to teach hygiene next semester," Dean Chase said, "but we are sure we can get someone to handle the courses for next fall." Professors in the department of biology volunteered to teach hy giene classes for the first semester this year after Doctor Schayer was granted a temporary leave of absence to enter the nation's ser vice, Dean Chase disclosed, saying that this was "done efficiently and effectively." AZA Regional Title For Oratory Given Lipton Defeats Eight; Goes To District Meet Joe Lipton, freshman from Beau fort, defeated eight opponents for the title of regional oratorical cham pion of the A. Z. A. for the com ing year. Lipton will represent the Columbia Chapter of A. Z. A. in the district contest to be held in Richmond in March. Joe Lipton is a member of the Clariosophic Literary society and was third-place-winner in the state declamation contest last year. He is entered in the School of Arts and Sciences. The A. Z. A. is the junior order of the B'nai B'rith, a national He brew organization for philanthropic and other public services.
