Board Holdl Meeting In New Political Science McKissick Will Apply F The board of trustees held t the University campus -yesterdi tions and heard an encouraging versity from President J. Rion Through resolutions, the Ur lowing actions: Authorized the award of the de-1 gree of Bachelor of Arts with music as the major course of study; Provisionally approved the employ ment df an associate or adjunct pro fessor of political science for 1941 42; Approved a plan for coordination of the work of the South Caroliniana committee and theSouth Carolina li brary, under which the president will appoint a director of the South Caro liniana library. Draftees Get Credit Authorized, in the case of students who withdraw to enter the armed service of the United States, that he be given credit for any course he is then pursuing, provided he has been enrolled in the course for a period of not less than two-thirds of the semester and provided each depart ment shall approve such credit on the basis of such tests and examinations as the department may determine; Awarded the faculty residence at 910 Sumter, formerly occupied by Dr. \V. S. Currell, to Dean Orin F. Crow of the school of education; Provided for part-time evening classes in engineering to aid in train ing of engineers for defense work; Authorized the president to tile a formal application for a naval ROTC unit armory to be constructed under the national defense program; Provided that all space in the new library building be devoted to library purposes and that none of this space be allotted to any group or organ ization for quarters of any sort, pro vided that temporary space may be allotted if in the judgment of the president it is necessary to do so. The board also tendered thonks as follows: To Tatum Gressette "for the high ly successful results of his efforts for upbuilding University athletics;" To Ralph Lewis, "alumni secretary, for his energy, vision and accom plishments for the uphuilding of our alumni organization;" To members of the faculty who have been engaged in productive scholarship; To Ben M. Sawyer and the state highway department for construct ing sidewalks and driveways around Sims college and the University li brary; To John Hughes Cooper for per mitting the Naval ROTC unit to use Forest Lake and for allowing the unit to construct a storehouse, pier and boathouse on his property at Lake Viewv; To Capt. R. A. Hall, in charge of the Naval ROTC unit, and his staff; To the Columbia Kiwvanis club for providling a trophy to be awardled to the best-drilled platoon of the Naval ROTC unit; To Senator James F. The chapter had an interesting meeting last Monday night, at which refreshments were served. Ed Cush man, president of the chapter pre sided. A, great many constitutional matters were threshed out, and the club set the dues at a dollar per year. Plans for a Young Democratic dance in the spring were formulated and a membership drive is being planned to go into operation shortly. Bill Rhodes and Margaret laskell are co-chairmen of the membership committee. Boyd Jordan is chairman of the constitutional committee. All students interested in the Young Democrats are urged to attend the next meeting after holidays. Music Department Presents Recital All-Student Affair To Be Heard On December 17th The music department of the Uni versity of South Carolina will present an all-student recital in the Univer sity chapel, Tuesday, December 17, 8:30 p. m. The public is cordially invited to attend. Prof, Hugh Williamson, director of music at the University said, "This is the first student recital given by the department this year.
