With Ed Patterson
Scattered scraps of nosey news... To start this issue's ball rolling we
begin by apologizing to all of the people we supposedly made mad last
week..-. But we weren't fooled, we know they love to see their name in
the paper regardless of what goes before or after it ... While the unat
tached males of the species get bluer every day with this stormy weather,
those with gal friends seem to be doing right well for themselves and
hand holding has become the fad with Frances Childs and Rock Yar
borough, the former spending 90% of her non-class time now in the
canteen... Ditto on the love stuff to Deva McCarter and Shirley In
man... And A. T. O.'s musical prodigy David Parker's pledge servants
came in handy not so long ago when they escorted him home from a
wedding reception ... Even if she did win one-hundred and fifty dollars,
and we're not mercenary, we'll chalk up a score on our list for very
venus-like Evelyn Henry... For further details as to Lollie McCant's
new nickname, "Coach," we'll have to ask you to see Jimmie Galloway...
BACK FROM DETROIT are those four acnies of journalism, League,
Sweatman, Sansbury, and Howe... Howe became a member of the
Brooklyn Dodger's, while Sansbury was appointed to the office of
U. S. C. ambassador to Canada, with the title "Duke of Windsor"...
Sweatman, who had to remain true to the gal friend at home did chaper
on duty to "Scoop" League and Clara Lou Carstenson on the trip to
Canada in her car ... Rumor has it that erstwhile Pi. K. Aian Bob
Schwinn had the pleasure of kissing his first girl out at Providence,
S. C., recently.. . Speaking of osculations, Sarah Morrison advises that
the best way to win a smooch is "to pull the wool over the guy's eyes,
rather than shut your own"...
A number of the popular debs who journeyed down to "the city by
the sea" last week for the bellhop hop are trying to keep their names
out of the society columns since they handed in sick excuses ... And
the belle of the legal school, Maude Byrnes Chisolm's love for criminal
law class goes further than the fact that her "Dictator" is in it .. . Ask
the professor why... This space was saved for a nasty crack at a
certain campus dramatic organization but since we regard the incident
too unworthy of note, we'll skip it ... At least for the time being...
And the triple D (meaning Mary Hull Kaminer) has learned to jitter
bug... Senator Tom McCutcheon, he of ballyhoo (another word for hot
air) fame, brought cute Jane Perry to a mess hall supper to hear
"Butcherboy" Gibbe's famous orchestra and the band didn't even show
up ... We'll probably get our necks chopped off in the process of saying
this, but we'll go on record for saying that the students hereabouts
should demand more respect and courteous service from the two members
of our campus constabulary ... Last Tuesday nite the inhabitants of
Preston College invited a negro piano playing genius into their lobby
to perform, paying him quite a few pennies ... A few minutes thereafter,
one of the judges threw the negro out and rebuked the boys for a sup
posed violation of an unknown campus rule...We can name other
instances ... After all, it's our maintenance fee that pays their salaries.
AND WHILE WE'RE IN A GRIPY MOOD, we'll coninr with
the suggestion of one not-so-dumb freshman that Thornwell College
and Burney College be torn down so that passing motorist on 'Pendle
ton and Green streets may be able to see the new library better... It
seems that he was getting hepped up over the tearing down of our old
wall and the digging tip of our historic campus so as to make the library
more visible... One little Courtney girl, whose first name is Julia Anna,
we think, has a collection of pulp magazines that would even put "Rat"
Eugene "Fatstuff" Godshall to shame ... The last mentioned is planning
on forming a H. W. C. (Harley Worship Club)... One of the students
in the press box on the rainy night of the Citadel-Carolina freshman
game, said in quote, about Marjorie McSweeney, "She's just standing
out there to see if she really will melt"... A good crack, but we can't
agree that it was anything else but school spirit which prompted her to
do so... Talking about glory, Daniel Walker Hollis was in his prime
last week-end with the appearance of that dainty Georgia peach Peg
Williams on the campus...- And we had a swell time being entertained
by her parents .. . A deck of "bridge" cards was the greatest loss sus
tained by "Skip" Henry when his Tenement 29 room caught on fire
last week ..
The current social cabinet is doing a swell job at putting on better
student dances... The one Saturday night was a wow ... And there are
plenty more to follow .. . Brittain can't ethically pat himself on the
back so we'll do it for him, his co-ed football idea was the biggest
publicity stunt this ancient institution has seen in many a year ... Now
that J. 0. B. is receiving a copy of The Gam,ecock weekly, this comment
girl friend home on weekends .. . Last time it was a co-ed Med. at Charles
is relayed to him: Better try to figure out a way to keep your local
ton, and the future is booked for months ... The status of the Lib Bird
Jimmie Lever romance is not known to us.... More details as soon as we
hear from Lever... But the Bert Hill-Virginia Copeland match is doing
o'k while Doug Parker, whlo has one of the lass' pictures, secretly pines
away...
Nothing more to print and less space to put it in so we'll close and
remain, the puzzled guy who wonders why, and doesn't give a hoot
because, fewer and fewer people speak to us after each issue ...

Martin and Proctor
The Furman eleven still has Pep

who vas Shetley's chief aid in the

Both teams are weak on reservc

Napkins On Tables
In School Canteen
Idea Abandoned Once;
Students Didn't Know
What They Were For
D George Coleman, president of
5 Kappa Sigma Kappa, honorary
e service fraternity, announced this
week that napkins have been placed
- on tables in the canteen through
ithe efforts of that organization any
s with the cooperation of "Whitey"
Rawl, manager of the University
- Cooperative Stores.
"These napkins have been placed
there for the benefit of student
patrons who might need them,"
says Coleman, "and are not pro
vided for boys and girls to .practice
art work on, for stationery, or to
make fancy lace."
This service will continue just as
long as the students take reasonable
care of the napkin holders and do
not litter the local general mer
- chandise shop's floor with the pa
per. The idea was tried several
years ago but was abandoned when
it became apparent that students
didn't seem to know what they
were provided for.

Probably the most interesting af

provoking message concerning jour

ture.
On display at the convention was
both The Garnet and Black and The
Gamccock, along with the rest of the
collegiate newspapers and yearbooks.
Numerous roundtable discussions
were held and new ideas advanced at
tie convention.
Carolina was represented on a
roundtable discussion broadcast over
the radio including five collegiate ed
itors, by The Gamecock's editor.
The topic was "College Editors And
Democracy".
On Saturday afternoon the four of
us attended the T. C. U. University
of Detroit football game played in
Detroit's stadium and saw the Tex%
ans lose by a 3-0 score.
One of the most interesting of the
things extra-curricula in point of en

automobile factory and a drive
through the city.
Sonme of us sawv radio stations and

Humorous part of the convention
was the way business managers would
huddle in little groups and talk of ex

ing in their corner of the building.
However, it was very likely that be
fore too much business or editorial
discusssion got underway at any

would come up.
It is safe to say that no matter
what the discussion, however, the
