In the midst of their tenth season
at Clemson College, the coaching stafi
has had a hard pull getting the Ti
gers out of the football "graveyard"
to the present standing.
Coming to Clemson in 1931 Coach
Neely and his assistants won a to
tal of one game, while losing six.
Since 1935 the teams have won over
60 per cent of the games played.
Falling before Clemson have been
some of the leading teams of the
country, among them are Georgia
Tech, Kentucky and Tulane. The

Radio Station In State
Will Broadcast Game
When 'Cocks Go North
On November 2, the South Caro
lina Gamecocks will again go North,
this time against undefeated and un
tied Penn State at State College,
Pa. . The Gamecocks will be going
against a team which is rated along
with Duquesne this year and which
has made good so far this year
against all opponents.
Radio stations that will broadcast
the South Carolina-Penn State game
are: WFBC, Greenville, South Caro
lina, WCAE, Pittsburgh, Pa.,
WLEU, Erie, Pa., WFBG, Altoona,
Pa. and WTBO, Cumberland, Md.
Penn State has won their first
three games this year which were
Bucknell, West Virginia, and Le
high. The Nittany Lions of Penn
State defeated Bucknell 9 to 0, West
Virginia, 17 to 13, and Lehigh, 34
to 0.
The only reported weakness of the
Lions is poor pass defense and there
is some chanice of the Gamecocks
using this to their advantage.
Despite the presence of some pret-.
ty husky backs on the Nittany squad,
most effective of all Lion ground
gainers this year have been two light
weights, Pepper Petrella and Sparky
Brown. Brown was, at the beginning
of the season, a third string half
back but his performance in the
West Virginia game when injuries
forced him into the game was su
perb according to the coaches.
For those that might be even slight
ly interested in making the trip to
Pennsylvania, here is a little infor
mation. The game time is at 2:00
and the tickets sell for $2.20. It is
1,328 miles to State College and the
railroad fare is $32.30 and the Pull
man is $10.50.

Seven Carolina
Seniors Start '
When the whistle blows tomorrow
at 2:00 to start the annual clash be
tween the South Carolina Gamecocks
and the Clemson Tigers, seven Game
cocks will be charging against the
Tigers for their last time.
Seniors Stan Nowak, Joe Hatke
vitch, Joe Patrone, Leo Kroto, Bill
Lowry, Kirt Norton, and Joe Gru
gan are ending their college football
careers this fall. They all have three
years behind them and are looking
forward to this, their last crack at
the Clemson Tiger.
The Gamecocks have not beaten
Clemson since before any of the boys
on the roster entered Carolina. In
fact, the Gamecocks have not de
feated Clemson since 1933, when the
Tigers went down 7 to 0.
All the seniors are lettermen and
they will be, along with the rest of
the squad fighting hard tomorrow as
the underdogs to "kill the Tiger."
Music Department
Has Rapid Growth
Has Great Increase
In Second Year
The University of South Carolina's
new music department has developed
rapidly since its founding in 1939.
In its second year of operation an
increase of 100 per cent has been reg
istered in piano and voice students
over 1939-40, and all classes in theo
retical music subjects show a decided
increase.
"The purpose of the department is
to give the most thorough training
to students in practical and theoreti
cal music, a sound and intelligent
background, a real appreciation of
the finest music, and to fit men and
women to go out and teach sound
principles of musicianship," said
Hugh WVilliamson, its director.
Rutledge College has been convert
ed into the new home of the music
department, and includes adequate
class rooms, practice rooms and
studies. New pianos have bcen pur
chased and a fine radio-phonograph
combination was added this year.
The University offers more than
400 courses in six professional
schools and 21 departments.

Specialize Elsewhere
Dick Baxter and Gene Alexander,
two former Gamecock athletes spe
cializing in two different sports while
here have now started their careers
elsewhere. Gene is assistant foot
ball coach and head basketball coach
at Gordon Military Academy, while
Dick is leading his football charges
at Denmark High School.
Gene was a basketball hawk on the
varsity Bird squad, and although
troubled with injuries his entire col
lege career in all the sports he went
out for, he found time to show bril
liance on the Gamecock quintet.
Dick Baxter, like Gene was the cap
tain of the team he specialized in his
last year of varsity competition. He
was a pugilist deluxe in the heavy
weight class on the boxing team,
and Coach DeMars is still bemoaning
the loss of this ace.
Down at Gordon Military Academy
Gene has the honorary title of Cap
tain, and can't get used to being sa
luted every time a cadet passes at
this small prep school at Barnesville,
Ga., one of the south oldest schools
of that type.
At Denmark, Dick is having his
share of misfortune, and now rea
lizes what the coaches wailing wall is
for. The small squad under Baxter
has lost all its gan.es to date, improv
ing in their last setback losing only
by two touchdowns.
Two hundred and five Carolina
students, more than 1/9 of the stu
dent body, are employed by the
N. Y. A.
Of the 28 freshman football
players, 23 are from South Carolina.
There are more than 50 student
