Naval Science and Tactics will be one of the regular four-year University
courses.
The purpose of the course is to provide systematic instruction which will
qualify the graduates for duties as deck officers in the United States Naval
Reserve. The course is also a valuable training for the student uho chooses
an industrial or professional career.
The head of the Department of Naval Science and Tactics is a Captain
or Senior Commander of the regular Navy, with many years' experience
afloat. His official title while assigned to this duty is "Professor of Naval
Science and Tactics." HeIc is assisted in the administration of his duties
by regular naval officers of from seven to fifteen years' service, who are
assigned to this duty by the bureau of navigation, U. S. navy department.
The student must, upon enrollment, signify his intention of maintaining
Bis standing at the institution for the completion of the course.
The length of the course in Naval Science and Tactics is four years, di
vided into two periods of two years each. The first period is known as the
basic course, and the second period as the advanced course.
Subjqcts under the naval sciencc course are navigation and nautical
astronomy, naval history, ordnance and gunnery, international and naval
law, strategy and tactics, and naval engineering. In addition to the class
room work practical instruction in seamanship and military drill is given.
Each enrolled member of the unit is furnished without cost a outfit
of uniforms and necessary equipment. Textbooks and reference books
covering the course are furnished free to each student.
During the summer vacation a cruise is arranged by the navy department
for members of the units and all are urged to attend each cruise. The
cruise is taken on naval vessels of the battleship, cruiser, or destroyer type,
during which the students are indoctrinated in the duties of a deck watch of
navigatr and in. the actua pointing and firing of guns at target
practice.
All students participating in the summer cruise are furnished subsistence,
bedding equipment, and traveling expenses both to and from the point of
embarkation.
Weekend cruises during the academic year are made as vessels are avail
able and the students indicate a desire to attend.
Students in the advanced course receive a subsistence allowance from the
time of enrollment at the beginning of junior year until graduation, pro
vided they maintain satisfactory standin in the ciors ap d e non as nt
