Withering News By Jeanne Withers THAT CHINK IS BACK g Conitiscious or some such sage once said that all good things snust come ta an end, and so now for one last time we sweep the scraps together, give the editor back his typewriter, and stumble down those *:-:$' dark steps. . . . for the last time. Our best thanks and curtsey to old Pop Zuckerman and Duck Sweatman, who made this column pos sible. Pop supplied the advice, Duck the lucre, and Coit the typewriter, (or so he calls it). * And still elections. Pi Pi's did theirs without politics. Margaret Blackwell, Mary Free, Lib Hughes, Theresa Jackson, and to take care of the pledges, Irene Gillespie. (The new watch she wears came from the same place as the Sigma Nu pin.) The Pi Kaps: Fred Quinn, Jimmie Merchant, and Olin Stiff. The Kappa Sigs don't seem to trust us any more. They sent the news to Coit, and asked him to "Please" print it. We'll fix 'em, by-heckl Officers: Mac Singletary, president; Frank Bryant, vice-president; Henry Heriot, secretary; and Hal Jervey, treas urer. * * * * * OFFICERS ELECTED, AD INFINITUM * Exact quote from said letter is: "The jolly kids are planning a house party at Pauley's beginning June 7 and lasting 10 days." Pip, pip, old chap, what say? Sure hope the kiddies will enjoy themselves. * The Sigma Chi's put some guys in office, too. Fred Holler, John McMillan, Andy Rogers, and Ed Whitmire. The quiet Pikas looked around and decided they couldn't do any better than: Bill Mayes, pres.; Jim Mills, vice-pres.; Clark McCants, sec.; and Lewis Smith, treas. * The pride of Reba Hunt, Dan S. Henderson of Columbia, is also the most outstanding senior to his brothers, who elected him to said honor and the Funderburke plaque. * ADPI's Marian Ballenger, Lucille Crosby, and Inajean Claussen took in their sister chapter's.formal at Duke, while another delegation went to Georgia for the province convention. Frances Allison, Anna Earl Beatty, Mary Barnwell, Polly Cely, Louise Efird, Dot Ehrlich, Ann Heath, Marion Wyman, Ann Vaughan, Juliette Ridley, and Bessie Moors all made the trek, leaving the boys who spend their time in the Pi room to play that old game of solitare. 0 Lopey Adelyn Lipscomb had the tuteledge of Alice Marble's coach while watch n' Alice play in Clinton. * All wast)'t quiet as it could have been behind the scenes of the May Coronation. We ain't sayin' nothin', but for further particulars, you can see Patterson. -* * * * * GERMAN CLUB DOES SOMETHING * After all the fuss the German club went about a new coat or arms, we wonder what in the heck they are going to do with it. They could use it for a new design on the members' red flannels. 0 The Sigma X's are stepping out in high society with their tea trottings. They teacd the faculty at Pres. McKissick's home, and stand ing in the receiving line were parlor pups: Bill Allen, John McMillan, Ed Whitmire, Wallace Evans, Carl Atkins, and Andy Rodgers. The main topic of small talk was Professor Bass's short wave activities, which right now is keeping the campus on its toes. The Professor claims that the news direct is so old that he's given up and will stick solely to American rebroadcast. * The best idea we've heard yet concerning this war business comes from down lower-campus way, "Dutchy" Evatt. le sez that England should hitch some of her ships to the island and pull it farther out in the Atlantic 0. 0 At the picnic of Phi Sigs at the Legion Hit, the most popular girl of the evening was Billy McGarity, who (ated Jack Reese. Mr. Reese thought his little red book inadequate in this case and sought new la terialI. 0 The next social event of the Phi Sigs will be their informal dance on June 1, after the fury of exams. Beauty Queen McCants declares that if the arguing doesi't stop, their (lance will come out with the Garnet and Black. O The Ala Phoo's hade their seniors farewell Wednesday night with a ceremony in the sorority room, after which the members and their dates went to Sesqui park on a hayride. Tl'he other Poo's, the AD's, went on a hay ride to Lake Murray. *The Delta Zeta's have a new pick up, the present of their pledges at a surprise party. * Chi Delta Phi, the national lit society on campus, elected officers. Katherine Rector is p)residenit, Elizabeth Hughes, vice-president; Alice Righam, secretary; and Blanche Gibbs, treasurer. A FOND FAREWELL * Tlhe last paraigraiph of this~ oftferinig colmes from thle hanids of Daniel T. Henderson, mnay his soul rest in peace. Good bye. * * * * * * "And so wvit h a mountainous lump choking me, and( oceans of tears llinimy eyes, I pass oni to my13 lucky successor a cohunni in a Tlechnical sense that relieves the bored for a few minutes each Friday; but to mue is the means of personally coiming in cotitact with cvery menmber of the growving student body of this our University of South Carolinia; and( making mc feel a part of Carolinia anid bringing close to me in the realms of friendship ev'ery Univ'ersity and high schlool readher of the Gamecock.
