ane Crum. ates High In Carolina Golf Co-ed Golfer Reaches Semi als in Raleigh Tourney For Women Jane Crum, stellar Carolina golf Ing co-ed, advanced to the semi finals of the annual Carolinas golf tournament for women in Raleigh yesterday as she defeated Cornelia McKimmon, Raleigh, 2 and 1. Jane will meet Mrs. Estelle Law son Page, favorite to win the tour nament, this afternoon. Cothran Also In In the opposite bracket are Jane Cothran, Greenville, - and Elizabeth Metts, Wilmington. Miss Cothran defeated Mrs. S. B. Caviness, Greensboro, 6 and 5, and Miss Metts beat Mrs. J. H. Epperson, Durham, 6 and 4. In the first flight Wednesday Jane beat Mrs. Allinne Hoover, Thomasville, 2 and 1. Crum Qualifies Third The Carolina co-ed was third in the qualifying round medal play with an 80. Jane Cothran showed the way with a 77, and Mrs. Page was in second place with a 78. The lanky Jane is currently shooting the best golf of her career. In the recent Charlotte invitation tournament she ad vanced to the semi-final bracket be fore being eliminated by the Green ville star. S. C. Golfers Fight For Cup If the two meet again at Raleigh, Jane says she will get sweet re venge. Both the Janes are play ing to keep the famous Carolinas trophy in the Palmetto state. Last year Kathryn Hemphill, Colum bia's pride, took the cup by beat ing Miss Cothran and Mrs. Page. Miss Hemphill is not defending her championship this year. Sam Russell Takes Forest Lakes Crown Freshman Sam Russell won the Forest Lakes golf championship for 1940 Sunday by defeating M. T. (Mitt) Jeffords, Orangeburg, 5 and 4, in the 36 hole tournament final. Russell succeeds Carlton Dixon. Furman University, as c h a m p. Dixon was eliminated early in the toney this year. Coach Havilah Babcock said this week that lie was expecting great things from Russell on the greensward. He is counting on the freshman to bolster Gamecock hopes in golf next season. "The boy has the makings of a first class golfer," said Babcock. The score was 9-9. Previously this week the Gamecock golfers had lost to the College of Charles ton, 9y-83. The first foursome was a close match with Martin and Chapman winning a total of seven points for the Citadel to Creason and Bab cock's two for Carolina. In the second foursome the sit uation was reversed, with Nauful and Blackwell scoring seven for USC, and McManus and Henkits making two for the Bulldogs. Carolina's Charlie Nauful was low scorer with a 76. McManus, Citadel, was second with a 77. The results: Martin (Citadel) defeated Crea son, 2y-3/. Chapman (Citadel) defeated Babcock, 2-1. Martin and Chapman (Citadel) defeated Creason and Babcock, Nauful (USC) defeated Mc Manus, 3-0. Henkins (Citadel) and Blackwell halved, 1Y2-1%. Officials pro nounced the recent track meet and tennis tournaments the best in the history of the events. Columbia City Schools' tracknen took top honors in the Class A cin der meet, completely outclassing the competition. Charleston, Easley, Parker, and Conway high schools placed high in the meet.
