CHEESECAKE IS FOOD FOR THOUGHT
* * * * *
CHILDREN MAY CRY FOR CASTORIA, BUT ADULTS
CLAMOR FOR' GLAMOR. Glamor even holds the spotlight
in such a nefarious business as war. From England recently have
come photographs of nurses in abbreviated costumes. Strip tease
shows, which in the recent past were banned in London by the
clergy, are now approved by the bigwigs. All of which, no doubt,
is intended to make the war something besides 'a bore for the legion
of Tommy Atkins.
Right here on our campus we are in the midst of a cheesecake
festival. Everybody is glamor girl conscious, ommphatically so.
For instance now you take our May Queen election. Norine
Huey, whom you wrongly described as a walking anachonism,
won top honors. And Rannah Heyward rannah close second.
You honestly believed the Huey gal was a pulchritudinous picture
of the past. But that was weeks ago. Since then a metamorpho
sis has taken place here. Responsible for that was Frank. Ward
law, director of the University news service, and Perrin Kennedy,
local camerartist. With Wardlaw directing, Kennedy captured
with the camera eye some Hollywoodish angles of Norine. When
the fotos were released they were on par with movie publicity
stills.

YOU WENT TO CAMDEN THE OTHER SUNDAY WITH
SPORTS ANNOUNCER Jim Young. While watching the equs
trian interpretation of billiards, Harper Gault, sports editor of the
Rock Hill Herald, came by to say hello. Harper began talking
about the fine publicity coming from the University.
"That was a swell picture you sent out last week," he said.
You thought he was talking about some gridiron picture, or the
photograph of a track star.
But he continued: "Yes, that was a swell picture of the May
Queen. Why, we even put it on the front page."
Trains crash and kill scores of people . . . ships sink . . . blitz
kreighs thunder in Northern Europe . . . the Dodgers win three in
a row ... and yet they find room on the front page for cheesecake.
In case you have gotten the idea that this columnist is again' it you
had better see your psychiatrist.
THE MOST INTERESTING SPORTS NEWS NOW
EMATING FROM THE UNIVERSITY concern two femi
nine athletes, Jane Crum, the Lady of the Links, and Sarah Rush
ton, Queen of the Tennis Court. Most of the sports editors in the
section are requesting pictures and stories about them. Jane's
photogenic countenance has often sported the sports section of the
Charlotte News. This week to Scoop League from Varsity, a new
weekly devoted to college news, came a request for fotos and stories
about Crum and Rushton.
One weekday afternoon you were sitting in the stands of Mel
ton field with two major league baseball scouts. There was a
baseball game in progress and the ivory hunters were ostensibly
searching for another Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. But the two gentle
men seemed more interested in the gambs than in the game. One
of them confessed that he thought our co-eds looked better than
our ball players.

EDITOR COIT HENDLEY CAN HARDLY THINK ABOUT
EDITORIALS THESE DAYS. His main source of concern is
Mary Daly, who is beautiful daily and Sunday. Mary is the South
Carolina entrant in the beauty contest sponsored by Radio and
Screen Guide. Should she be chosen among the top twelve in the
nation, she and Hlendley would get a free train ride to Galesburg,
Illinois, the home of Knox College and the background of a rac
coon coat flicker soon to be released by the cinematstros.

BUT YOU KNOW A FELLOW WHO STILL LIKES HIS
WOMEN BEAUTIFUL but dumb, as the expression goes. In
other words he has a yen for glamorons.

South Carolina is low on the list
of illiteracy as compared with the
rest of the states in the Union. Since
the War Between the States, South
Carolina has not regained her place
of prestige. To most sections of the
United States the Old South Carolina
holds a significance-but the new
one has relatively little. It is in lieu
of this fact that I advocate and feel
the need for a little South Carolina
advertisement.
You should be proud to live in the
same state with a band as fine as the
Winthrop College Band. The Legis
lature, which represents the state as
a whole, is proud enough of us to
show us off to the whole world by
sending our band to the New York
World's Fair.
They, which represent your home
town and mine-your taxpayer father
and mine, reflect and register the
same attitudes of our parents as a
whole. That is why they are sent
to the State Legislature; that is why
they were elected-for had not our
parents and other voters faith
to put into those men's and
women's hands their trust, they
would not have been elected. And so
they act as proxy for our citizens and
taxpayers.
To get a new chapel, Kappa Sigma
Kappa doesn't have to "orgaisize a
co-ed band with the May Queen as
drum majorette," nor "plead your
cause with strains of 'Dixie' and 'The
Hupa-Hula March.' " No! All you
have to do is to have the motivation.
After having that, then you will find
a way-even though the money comes
from your very own pockets which
is now being spent as social "musts."
So, I don't understand why you be
grudge our one small taste of the so
cial sweets of life-for most of our
other life is not a social sweet. If
you don't believe me. ask transfers
from our college to your University;
for they just couldn't take the many
grains of social salt they had to
swallow here, for that is why they
transferred.
And yet you begrudge us
the only mouthful of social food
which is fed us by the state.
IIeaven lfielp the narrow-minded
pessimism of such gluttons as are all
for themselves, with never another
thought of others who are less for
tunate!
I am,
Sincerely yours,
(Miss) Lessie Gertrude Wilson.
