Campus Overflows
With High School
Week Contestants
High School Week is in progress!
Which you knew, we hope.
These welcomes alway's make us feel fool
ish. We think a good joke would do much
more good. But, it's been the custom through
the years to give them. So, here goes.
Welcome, high school contestants.
Seriously, the University and the students
are rather pleased that you can spend some
timo on the campus.
Maybe you will like it and come back for
four more years.
Something Sensible
Is Finally Done
Concerning Fraternities
An amazing thing has happened. The fac
ulty committee on fraternities has made several
concessions to the fraternities.
This is rather discouraging and disconcert
ing, because, by being fair and possibly open
minded, they have partially nullified all the
bad names we have called them.
The committee has granted permission to
the fraternities to remove beds intended for
chapter rooms and put them in other rooms in
the tenement. Before this, these beds were
confiscated by the University. Several other
minor changes were made. The complete
story is on page 1.
The important thing is that concessions have
been made.
As for the obnoxious social regulations now
in effect, the committee stated that they had no
jurisdiction in the matter since it was a ruling
of the Board of Trustees.
Obviously, the next step for the Interfrat
ernity council is to see if the matter can be
brought to the ,attention of the board.
All credit for the progressive step taken,
progressive in that the committee hassshown
itself to be sensible, goes to the Interfraternity
council and Bruce Hunt, president.
We have spent our time sitting in the Game
cock office making faces at the faculty (to quote
one professor) while the faculty made faces
back.
Well, we are going to continue to yell and
make faces because that's the way we feel.
Plenty has to be done before the fraternity
situation at this University will become any
where near satisfactory.
Skeptical might be the word to describe our
feelings.
There are still the idiotic social regulations
left, and a new matter concerning the objec
tion of the committee to picnics on Sunday
(an old American custom, we understood),
and plenty of other things.
Put it this way. Wve'll let the Interfratern
ity council try to get things '1one by discus
sions, meetings, etc., while . - tell you what
they really think about the gulations.
Forty Seniors Refuse
To Learn English; May
Not Graduate Accordingly
About 40 seniors have failed to make any
arrangements about the Senior English exam
w~hich they did not pass, according to Dr.
Havilah Babcock.
And the poor scoundrels expect to graduate
in June.
The Board has ruled that all seniors take an
English exam and that those failing also fail
to graduate. The reason for this is quite ob
vious. After all, if you attend the University
for four years, you should be expected to pass
a simple test on your native language. If you
can't, you shouldn't have a diploma.
The Gamecock maintained that when the
ruling was first passed. It still takes the same
stand.
A good many students have studied, and
finally made up the deficiency. Forty candi
dates for degrees, however, have done nothing.
We suggest they do something.
To Whom, Etc.
To whom it may concern--That two col
umns of column on the back page of the Game
cook misqnotes us slightly.

Dies Committee
Will Entertain
U. N. C. Next
The University has missed a wonderful
chance for publicity. -
If some of our intellectually dead students
had organized a German-American Bund, a
Communist club, or even a down-with-the
faculty-club, we might be in the process of be.
ing investigated by Representative Martin
Dies.
Dies, who is chairman of the committee for
the investigation of un-American activities,
has confirmed that his committee will conduct
an investigation at the University of North
Carolina because of reports that Communism
is very strong.
We will do some quoting from The Daily
Tar Heel just so you can have part of the fun
the whole University of North Carolina is
having.
President Frank Graham of the University
of North Carolina merely commented, "We
will welcome the investigation."
The probe was decided upon after letters to
the committee by David Clark, an alumnus,
urged an investigation of communist -educa
tion. Clark specifically mentioned that com
munism was strong at the University of North
Carolina.
And from a Daily Tar Heel editorial--"It
is not 'our purpose to doubt the evident sin
cerity of Mr. Clark or to intimate that his
campaigns are for any other purpose than to
look toward the welfare of the University.
Evidently the gentleman is obsessed with a
haunting fear that Communism is about to
pounce upon our young impressionistic minds,
that the red agitators of ASU are swarming
overe the Carolina campus undermining the
Democratic ideals of Americanism.
"Clark's outbursts seems so utterly insignifi
cent and unimportant in their meaning that
the average Carolina student on the campus
is inclined to laugh heartily about the whole
tiing.
"Rest assured that the University student
body will exist many a year before it achieves
even the admirable qualities of openminded
ness and tolerance which are so often mistaken
for a red flag waving in tihe breeze. ,It isn't
hlappening hlere."
Apparently, tile University of North Caro
lina is goinIg to have some good clean fun.
And apparently Mr. Dies must have run out of
bona fide suspects.
May Queen Picture
Is Almost Too Good,
Says Somebody
That's a good picture of the May Queen,
Norine Huey, which is on thle front page.
It was taken and released by the University
News Service and is tile first decent picture of
a Carolina May Queen ever made. We under
stand that Mr. Frank Wardlaw was a little
worried after it was printed in tile local papers.
lie was afraid it might be too good for some
of the pedestrian minds of tile University and
the state.
One of the powers did make a comment.
Said she, "There's a lot of leg in it."
Furman Hornet
Makes An Error
Which We Correct
Last week we received the j udgmnent of the
Associated Collegiate Press on The Gamecock.
It read: first class honors.
Also making this rating was tile Furman
hornet (among other papers in tile state).
The Hornet, in a front page story, stated
that they had won the rating for two suc
cessive years, a record unequaled in this state.
Maybe so.
We have always maintained that being a
gentleman is like being happy--if you try you
aren't.
Accordingly, we refuse to act like a gentle
man; and proceed to point out to the Hornet
that The Gamwcock, has won a first class
rating for the past three years, which is as
far bank as we were able to check

Imagine Ass't Registrar Flinn Gilland's surprise when he

on the dates from April 20th to the 25th. . . The reason for the

Lovely Jane Wylly (She with the pretty teeth) was a broken

moment, Jimmy Moore, dashed home to say "hello'' to ma. .
Wish we had the opportunity to make up for the lost time. .
Margaret Cain may be beautiful and all that, but her feet are
just too big or else she's wearing shoes too small as evidenced
by the fact that she had to buy a vast supply of bunion plas.
ters recently at a local drug firm. . . The champagne bottle
which adorns Katie Beaty's room is empty and its contents were
not devoured by the aforementioned lass. . . In fact the bottle
never had anything in it but was salvaged from the waste
basket of a bankrupt booze store... Lil Boulware, blonde venus
with somne to spare, harbors a desire to leave her shoes at home
and run around barefooted oiX one of these pretty days. . .. We'll
go on record as advocating a barefoot day for co-eds. . . One

Speaking of mercenary things, Laurie Hicks has a brand new

nomination goes to Marion Wyman, adequately described in
previouse editions of this corner. ...

Editor Hubert Harmon of the far-famed Garnet and Black
has dared us to stick out our heads and choose, or at least try
to choose, the members of the fairer sex who will grace the
beauty section of this year's edition. . . Out of the ten we name
we'll bet that at least four are chosen. . . And we absolutelY
have no inside dope but are forecasting on our own. . . The
order in which they appear means nothing. . . Here they are:
Betty Wilson, Mary King, Pat Jeter, Katie Beaty, Mackey King,
Gale Johnson, Jeanette Propst, Margaret Oain, Norine fluey and
Jane Wyfly. . . By putting them here doesn't mean that we
would put them in any of our beauty section necessarily, but
seems to be the concensus of opinion of many fellow students. ..

Won't be long till school will be over and we have yet to
