McCutchen And Hollis Win In Winthrop Meet Ten Forensic Honors Are Taken By USC Representatives There Tom McCutchen and Dan Hlollis, University of South Carolina representatives at the Grand Eastern Forensic Tour nanent held at Winthrop Col lege last week, took ten honors at the meet. McCutchen, who won second in the South Carolina Intercollegiate Oratorical Contest held at Furman April 4, finished with finals in or atory, finals in extempore, two finals in after dinner speaking, two finals in impromptu, and the grand finals in extempore. Ilollis reached the finals in ex tempore and after dinner. In the extemporaneous speaking, McCutchen met in the finals the man who won the nationals. In all McCutchen spoke 33 times at the tournament. 33 Students Enrolled In The Red Cross Live Saving Course Rod Turnbull And Six Assistants Instruct Swimmers Thirty-three students at the Uni versity of South Carolina are tak ing the Red Cross life saving course being conducted in the University pool this week by instructor Rod Turnbull. This is almost twice as many as participated in this course last year and shows the increased interest in swimming at the University since the completion of the pool a little over a year ago. Turnbull is being assisted by the following instructors; Willis Beall, Mickey Emory, M. L. Jerry Hicks, Bob White, Fritz Turner, and Kirt Norton. Those enlisted in the course are: A. C. Clarkson, Robert Brown, C. W. Walker, E. J. Green, Boots De Lorme, Andy Jones, Dutch Elston, Louis Sossaman. Edward Milley, Robert White, Harry Lofton, Ken Roskie, Tom Sanders, John Hemp hill, Kit Fitzsimmons, Harold Jer vey, Milton Tipping, Virginia Cope land, Peggy Newvton, Bud Get singer, Al Grygo, Fritz Turner, Car ville Chalk, Jimmy Wilson, Norine Huey, Huland Bryant, Jackie Wil liams and Bob Griffith. The course is being given in five three-hour classes and will be fol lowed by an instructor's course with the same number of class hours. Chuck Mix, National Red Cross field mani, will give the instructor's course. 8. C. Netters Defeat Erskine Carolina's Birds of the court de feated Erskine, 5 to 2, here Monday afternoon. This is t session of school. Dr. Sherrill Calls ForEssay Contestants Three' Must Enter If Medal To Be Given Dr. George R. Sherrill, professor of political science, University of South Carolina, today issued a last call for contestants in the Philo S. Bennett essay contest which closes May 1. To date only two of the three students required to enter have filed applications with the essay committee. Unless another contest ant submits a contribution, the medal will not be awarded. The essay topic, as prescribed by the donor of the award, is "The principles of Free Government." Due to the wide scope of this sub ject, however, the essay committee will choose a more specific phase for contestants to use. Students de sirous of competing are urged to contact Professor Sherrill before May 1, the contest deadline. William Jennings Bryant, as executor of the will of the late Philo S. Bennett, New Haven, Conn., designated in 1905 the Uni versity of South Carolina as one of 25 cThleges to receive the sum of $400 for permanent investment. The annual interest therefrom is used to provide the medal. Any University student is eligible for participation. S. C. Art Exhibit Will Be In May The University of South Carolina art dlepartment will have its exhibit the second wveek in May, Miss Katherine Heyward announced to day. This year's exhibit will be par ticularly interesting because various newv mediums of painting will be usedl. "Let's Keep College Boxing", a factual article by Dick Baxter, is written in the defense of this col legiate sport. Baxter relates the thrills, attractions, and the risks in volved as viewed from personal ex perience. However, he emphatically recommends the abolishment of the collegiate tournament. "Cocktails, Kisses and Garlic", is a light humorous personal experi ence article by Dot Sawyer who portrays a picture of the old French quarters in modern New Orleans on the banks of the Mississippi. Other features are a discussion of "The Arts" at Carolina by Ton Walker, and two poems, "The Fac ulty," by a student and "A Letter to Jean" by Wild Bill. Illustrations and photographs were contributed by Raymond Da vis, Daniel Millsaps, Marjorie Brown, the cover, and Frank Barnes. Dr. Ball Will Speak To S. C. X-Ray Group The South Carolina X-ray So ciety has invited Dr. T. F. Ball of the Unvat of Sout Carolina electrical engineering department to be guest speaker at its annual meet ing to be held May 1 at the Francis Marion hotel in Charleston. Doctor Ball's topic will be "Ra diation Physics". A round table discussion of the cancer control of the South Caro lina board of health will be led by Dr. C. L. Guyton. Dr. T. A. Biologists Olivia Walker Elected Secretary-Treasurer Of Junior Biologists The South Carolina Association of Junior Biologists founded last fall at the University of South Car olina held its first annual state-wide meeting at Greenville April 20. Plans were completed for the year and a new constitution was adopted. Twelve students from the Univer sity attended the meeting. There were 54 delegates from six colleges and universities throughout the state present. The meeting con sisted of two sessions. The morn ing session consisted of a discussion of a constitution and the reading of a paper on Hydroponics by Bryan Lumpkin of the University. A sec ond paper on "The Advantage of the use of Drosophile in Small Col leges" was read by Miss Ann Bo vard of Limestone College. Both papers were received with approval. Officers were elected at the after noon session. They were: pres ident, Mac Montgomery, Citadel; vice-president, Harley Williamson, Clemson; secretary-treasurer, Miss Olivia Walker, University of South Carolina. The meeting was presided over by W. H. McCaw of the Uni versity. Between the meetings a luncheon was held where students from each of the schools could meet the other representatives. Students from the University, Clemson, Furman, Win throp, The Citadel, Limestone, and other schools were present. At the afternoon session the con stitution was passed and the aims of the organization defined. The as sociation is for the betterment of the study of biology in the schools of the state and for a more general knowledge of experiments con ducted at other schools. Plans for the year include a semi-monthly bulletin to be issued by the organi zation. The meeting was held in con junction with the South Carolina Academy of Science. Meeting next year will be held at the same time and place that that organization meets. Students To Hold Minor Positions In Hotel The recently completed Hotel Wade Hampton, which opens its doors formally May 1, has issued a statement that only University of South Carolina students will be em ployed in minor positions. The management said that would mean at least thirty available jobs for the male memuers of the Caro lina student body. Art Society Goes On Sketching Party The Katherine Heyward Art so ciety of the University of South Carolina went on a sketching trip in the woods last Sunday, Pres. Dan Millsaps said today. Jimmy Ander son, secretary of the club was in charge. The society, which was formed early this year, includes majors and minors in the art department with a "B" average.
