Claud 75 Bi Gamecock Golfe Match Of The S Western State Te Kalamazoo Takes Coach Havilah Babcock's golf team will take a rest from greens ward competition next week, but will resume play against state teams the following week. Coach Babcock said yesterday that the schedule for the rest of the season is not yet complete, but that it would include matches with Fur man, Citadel, and Clemson. Other teams will be played if matches can possibly be arranged. Birds Lose To State The four linksmen of Carolina lost to Western State Teachers Col lege of Kalamazoo, Michigan, here Wednesday, 12Y2-52. This was the first defeat of the season for the Birds, who have beaten Presby terian, Augusta Junior College, Fur mian, Davidson, Kalamazoo, and Hampden-Sydney this year. Claude Creason was low scorer of the matci with a 75. Creason won the first match of the setto from the Teachers' number one, 3-0, but from there on out, it was all Western State. Will Enter Tourney The Gamecocks plan to enter the second annual state golf tournament here May 3. Coach Babcock believes his team has a good chance to un seat the Citadel's golfers, defending champions. Yesterday, Babcock said his team was still in the nebulous state, al though the season is half gone. Any University student may challenge a member of the team for his position. Babcock hopes to uncover some new talent from the intramural golf tournament at the Trenholni Road links Tuesday. Good Golfers Here "There are some good golfers in school," he said, "and I hope we can get them to come out for the team. I believe we have about the best material in the South on the links." Creason is Babcock's main hope for the state tournament. The steady-going golfer has been shoot ing in the low 70's all season, and barring accidents should be ready to cop the South Carolina crown, May 3. Golf Team Plans Intramural Golf BlackWell, Nauful, Charge Of Venture \\ edInesdlay afternoon there will be an intramural golf tournament at the Trenholm Road links, Pete Blackwell of the University golf team announced Wednesday night. George Crawford Coed Netters Meet Georgia Girls April 27 Fifteen Girls Are Out; Shortage Of Courts Keenly Felt The Carolina co-ed tennis team is planning to meet the University System of Georgia girls here April 27 as the two boys teams bat balls at each other. Sara Rushton said Wednesday that about 15 girls were out for the co-ed team, and that Carolina would have a good aggregation if there are enough courts. "I'm afraid there just aren't enough courts to accommodate two teams and still give the students a place to play," she lamented. "We have some of the best girl tennis material in the South, but we haven't had a chance to develop it." Sara said that the team selections have not been made yet, as the girls haven't had the time or place to p)lay each other. The team that takes the court against the Georgians probably wvill be a pick-up aggregation. Henson Makes Four Blocks And Starts Letter Club Grand Old Man Wins Honors In New Fields Including Politics By Dan T. Henderson A familiar name to all Gamecock followers is that of J. B. "Pinhead" Henson. It was "Pin" who almost singlehandedly defeated Florida in '36, it was the "Pin" again in the summer of '37 who suffered a back njury that kept him off the gridiron for a year, and again in '40 "Pin 1lead" made the big type by revising the Block C chb on the Carolina :-ampus after a five year lapse. This is to mention only a few of the headlines around which he could build quite a scrap book, for he has been active not only in football in which he was co-captain in '39 but also boasts letters in basketball, baseball, and track. In track Henson was rated as one of the best pole vaulters in the south, winning the state meet in '36. Since the automobile wreck in the summer of 1937 when J. B. broke his back he has been unable to per form on the cinders. One of the most notable feats of Pinhead on the gridiron and prob ably the one given less publicity if any, was his determination nol to let the Gamecocks fold up when the Villanova Wildcats were re venging a 6-6 tie last season and were driving the Birds all over the field in a game that ended in a 40-C defeat for Carolina. When the go ing was toughest the "Pinner' fought hardest. The Block C club which folded five years ago and was revised foi a semester in 1937 has been re organized from the ground up by a man who believes in Carolina and was willing to devote hours to th< rebuilding of a club of vital im portance to Carolina. Pinhead was rewarded in a small part for his hard work when ht was elected last Nionday on the firsi ballot to the Social Cabinet out of a field of six. This might be recog nized as a vote of confidence foi the "grand old man of Carolina Athletics". WAA To Put On Exhibition Of Sports Rushton, Crum, Martin Will Demonstrate Pet Hobies At Meet The Woman's Athletic Asso ciation will give an exhibition of winter and spring sports in the gymnasium Tuesday, April 16, at 8 p. m., Elizabeth Bird, secretary, announced Wednesday. Sara Rushton will give an ex hibition of correct tennis form, and Jane Crum will demonstrate proper golf tactics. The girls will play short games of volley-ball, basketball, tennis and badminton. Jewel Martin will give a demonstration in arch ery. Folk dancing and clog danc ing also will be displayed by the co-eds. Polly McKenzie, president of the WAA, will introduce the out standing girl athletes at the Uni versity. Nancy Pope, gym in structor, has charge of the ex hibition. During the program the out standing co-ed athletes will be awarded old English "C's". The WAA will charge an ad mission fee of 10 cents. Got Almos ie lo rage 1eVen Former Bird Star Extends Austin In Camden Match Daniels And Rushton Defeat Austin And Scott In Doubles Sara Rushton, Carolina co--ed ten nis star, and Sam Daniel, former USC student and state singles champion, stepped into fast net company Sunday as they defeated "Bunny" Austin, famous English Davis cup winner, and Miss Irene Scott, Columbia, in Camden Sun day. It was a very close match, the score being 7-5, 6-4. Earlier that day Daniels had ex tended the English star to 36 games before finally succumbing in the second set, 19-17. Austin took the first set, 6-1. The second set between the two men took over two hours as Daniel fought gamely against the more ex perienced Englishman. In the tenth game the South Carolina boy was set point, but Austin rallied and took the game. Twice during the set each player broke his opponent's service. Austin, although out of training since his appearance in the Wimble don matches last June, demonstrated a beautiful mastery of the net game.
