Need To Work
For Four Meets
Little's Back Still
Causes Bird Dashman
Trouble And Worry
Carolina's track team, much in
need of training, is slowly condition
ing, but will have to really put out to
bg in shape for the opening meet of
the season March 30, with Furman in
Greenville.
Captain Dick Little, high score
artist of the Bird cindermen, due to
a back injury of last sunner that
has reappeared on several occasions,
is working hard, not to get in shape
but to get his back in condition, to
stand some training. John Spigner,
Little's running mate in the dashes,
is starting his first season in three
without being hampered by injuries,
is fast whipping into shape and
should be able to carry at least his
share of the work in a hard
schedule.
T. H. Davis, alternate captain of
the track team, is pole vaulting, and
the team and Coach Dupre are pray
ing with him that his trick knee
won't try any tricks until after the
state meet in Clinton the first part
of May. Davis' knee went bad on
him during the height of the season
last year and since then, even
though it has stood up, the knee
has never been as good as par.
Rain and wind have kept the dis
tance men indoofs for such a long
period that perfect shape is im
possible by the opening of the sea
son. To be able to run two miles
or even a mile for that matter in a
meet, it is necessary to be in top
condition.

Howey Stars

Has Not Been Tossed
Out Of Basketball
Setto For Fouling
BY LEONARD TURNBULL
James Howey is his name,
everybody, and you rMight hear
more about him within the next
year or two.
At the present time Jimmie is
competing in three sports, intra
mural boxing and basketball, and
varsity baseball. Added to that
Howey is a law student with
a B plus average and Howey de
livers around 100 State papers
daily to students on the campus.
His spare time? He ain't got
any.
During the past fall Jimmie
played basketball for the OPO
quintet, and was the star forward
on that team which bowled over
many of the strongest fives in
the City League and teams from
the surrounding territory.
During one engagement when
the OPO players traveled to
Springfield, Howey scored the
unbelievable total of 58 points,
and that isn't a typographical er
ror.
Another point in Howey's rec
ord of which he is justly proud,
is the fact that he has never
fouled out of a basketball game.
He played for four years in high
school, three years of intra
murals, and the past season with
the OPO's and he has yet to
have the score keepers to yell
out, "Four fouls on Howey."

Pool Is Now Scene
Of Renewed Activity
Carolina's new pool, after a long
layoff due to an influenza epidemic,
is again in a blaze of water splash
ing glory with the freshman tank
stars working out daily, and begin
ning swimmers taking regular les
sons froim Red Cross Instructors.
The water rats recently defeated
the Columbia Bible College tank
team in an unofficial meet as Rob
ert Harris, 100 yard breast stroke
artist, proved his ability as a college
swimmer. Harris has unofficially
broken the state breast stroke rec
ord by many seronds. If Carolina
has a varsity team next year, he will
take quite a few points i i his di
viSilon.
The rat tankinen are trying to get
meets with other college freshmen
in the state. anl with surrounding
high school tank teams.
The swimming lessons for non
swimmers are )eing given under the
University department of physical
education for men. J. A. Crawford
is head of this department.
Howey has already stated his
intentions of playing varsity bas
ketball next year for the Game
cocks.
