Philip Keith Palmer, former
backstroke champion of the
Southern Conference, has been
named coach of the newly or
ganized swimming team. Pal
ner held the back stroke title,
while an und(ergraduate at the
University of Miami.
Palmer was later connected with
the water-polo team at the Park
Central Athletic Association in New
York City. It was while on this
team that Palmer came in contact
with the swiimming facilities of the
large northern universities and
after seeing the pool here declared
that it was the finest indoor pool
that he had ever seen with the ex
ception of Yale.
After watching the prospective
fishes work-out, he said that they
could be rounded into a fair team,
and that, "It is not as bad as I ex
pected".
Freshmen and Varsity to Have
Team
There will he a varsity and fresh
man team with meets in the state,
and if the team is advanced enough,
out-of-state meets will be scheduled.
A large intramural swimming pro
gram is also planned in the $108,000
pool, that still has a lot of newness,
despite the fact that the students as
a whole have practically deserted it.
The candidates are working out
daily during the regular swimming
period for boys. This is from 4:30
p. m. until 6 p. m. on Monday, Wed
nesday, and Friday; and 3 p. m.
until 4:30 p. i. on Tuesday, Thurs
day, and Saturday, the regular
period between 3 and 6 is used.
New Coach Well Liked
We feel sure that Philip will have
no trouble on the campus. He fin
ished school in 1936 and went into
the newspaper work with the Unit
ed Press. He came to Columbia
last June, and since that time has
been connected with radio station
WIS. It seems that the swimming
coach was sports editor of his school
paper, and in strict confidence told
us that usually he did the society
page, too.
Although the swimming season
doesn't start until spring, anyone
who is planning to go out for the
team should report to coach Palmer
before December 15 and let him
know when he is planning to come
out.
The first formal meeting of the
university swimming team will be
held next Saturday at 3 p. m.

letic Association.

and Catherine Webster, treasurer.
Plans for several sports events
have already been started for this

Karuba, the Biddies drove 85 yards
early in the third quarter and with
John Leitner leading the attack
drove across for the first score.
Carolina's second touchdown
came after Clem Nowak had recov
cred a fumble on the Furman six
teen. Riley, on a reverse, went over
standing up.
Furman struck fast, and four
plays after the kickoff, Hicks took
lByer's pass, and scamperedl fifteen
yardls, for the lone Furman tally.
Champs Three Straight Years
This was the third successive
time, and the fourth time in the
last five years that freshmen coach,
Tedl Petoskey, all-American end at
Michigan, has guided the Biddies to
a state championship. Although not
in the class of the '37 Iron AMen,
this year's team dlidn't have to take
much stuff off of anybody as far
as football was concerned, the
Georgia Bull Pups being an excep)
tion.

The varsity golf tcam held their
first meeting of the season on
November 3, at wlhich time the
team vas organized under the di
rection of Dr. Babcock, who has
been chosen team coach by Rex
F.nright, Director of Student Ac
tivities.
Forest Lake golf course has been
chosen by the team the practice
gkutuds for their club swinging
abilities.
Jane Crum, wlho is well known
for her zolfing triumphs. will in all
probability go out for the team and
help them to gain victories on the
golf links.
Claude Creason, one of the out
standing candidates for the team,
said, "I think we are going to have
a fine team this year, and we ought
to be able to give the opposing
teams a good fight for the cham
pionship."'
