ODK Announces 'Prerc For' Membership. Cand Names Of Would-Be Members Must Be Given To Committee Meeting To Elect New Members Will Be Held November 28th New members will be elected into OTicron Delta Kappa, national honorary leadership fraternity, at a meeting of the organization on November 28. The newly elected members will be tapped during the chapel exercises on the following Friday. All persons eligible for membership in 0. D. K. are requested to hand in their points by Friday, November 24, to one of the membership committee. Members of the committee are Tom McCutchen, Billy Bryan, D. A. Westmoreland, George Cole man, and Andy Marion. Requirements for membership in 0. D. K. include accumu lation of at least one hundred points and a scholastic average equal to the all men's average. On a recent visit to Asheville, N. C., Dr. Thomas F. Ball, profes sor of electrical engineering at the University met up with one "Slim" Heyward who was a classmate of Dr. Ball's at the University from 1912 '15. Mr. Heyward who looks down upon fellow mortals from the higher altitudes-a little over seven feet was quite famous among the student*, as he was considered to be the tall est man in the United States at that time. "We had a great time reminiscing over old football (lays," said Doctor Ball. "We dug up such names as Fritz Von Konlita, John Mills, Dan Heyward, and others." Dan Heyward, a cousin of moon fixer "Slim's", made a name for him self on this campus. "No more football for you, young man," said the doctors to Dan after he had received an injury in his back in high school football. But Dan, the undaunted, hit upon an idea-and it worked, too. He entered the Uni versity and pranced out on the grid iron one day with a big fat pillow stuffed in the seat of his pants. The pillow gave Dan the necessary sup port and down that field he went, through the "enemy line" and over the goal-perhaps, amidst flying feathers, but he crossed it just the same. Dan and his pillow came to be a superstition with the team. No pil low-no score. But when Danny.boy came out on that field with pillow close behind it was a touchdown for U. S. C. Piano Arrives For New Women's Dorm The baby grand piano for the new woman's building. Sims College. has arrived and is being installed in the music room there, a bulletin from the office of Arney R. Childs, dean of women at the University of South Carolina, announced. Also from Mrs. Child's offce comes the information that the members of Alpha Kappa Gamma, national honorary society, of the University of South Carolina, are, as is customary each year, taking over the Red Cross roll call of the faculty. The University of Illinois is con structing new campus buildings at a cost of $3,400,000. Portugese has been added to the long list of foreign languages taught at the University of Texas. The book was pre sented by Bill Blackwell, who re ceived it as a gift from Mr. H1lunting ton. Prof. Zeigler states, "This is in deed a signal honor to the Univer sity, as Mr. Huntington is already well-known as a public benefactor to hundreds of South Carolinians." Hie is the sponsor of the famous Brook green Gardens in Georgetown Coun ty and has made numerous gifts of art treasures to the Charleston Mu seum. Besides his philanthropies andl art contributions he is rated by thc critics as a poet of no mean ability. Prof. Zeigler further saidl, "It is felt that other northern winter resi dlents should be encouraged to take more interest in the University and its affairs, to the mutual advantage of both." Ball of the electrical engineering department at the University of South Carolina. This was done in order to pay prices on the materials at that time and pre vent the University from having to assume the additional burden of ris ing prices. The local contractor to whom this contract has been let, has agreed to employ two seniors in electrical en gineering to assist in the installation of all equipment. The students wil be paid at the regular rate for their work. The -new switchboard is expected to arrive about November 27, said Doctor Ball, and it will be installed along with other equipment in the laboratory.
